Tough back 9
Great layout with some challenging holes especially on the back nine. Four island greens overall. Course was in great shape for end of November. Greens were not quick but still played well. Would have been a 5 star review apart from the bunkers that were really inconsistent. Some with sand ,some without. I was in a lot of them 😊
Not Female Friendly
Beautiful course! AND…..poor management.
Watered nightly when they do not need to. On cloudy days (golfed 4 days) that were cloudy the dew was so thick, the ball wouldn’t fly or roll. The tee boxes were soggy grass Pits.
We had 120 women coming for a competitive tournament. Carts weren’t ready, the guys behind the counter were not friendly. They had around 10 shirts out and we were told that no one ordered anything (big mistake- our last tournament they sold over $7500 in merchandise.
Had no womens gloves out.
The attitude felt like “this was a little woman’s retreat.”
Oh….but they did have a bookshelf FULL of candles for sale😂😂😂😂
Horrible Staff!!!
Front Staff Manager was an a/hole in my humble opinion! Made turn and clubhouse only had half of what was on menue. Staff and Experience was awful!
Ratings for June 2023
Tee box - 8/10. Needs mowed, but we’ve had a lot of rain recently so not a big deal.
Fairway - 8/10. Same as above
Rough - 9/10. Minimal weeds, thick and tough to get out of. You don’t want to be here.
Greens - 8/10. Needed rolled, or cut. Slower than usual.
Glizzy post round - 8/10.
Very disappointing
I have played this course numerous times, and always look forward to it, but Monday was the exception. Starting out, the range was closed at 10:30 due to mowing, that’s ridiculous for a holiday weekend. Second pace of play was terrible, and I knew it would be slow, but 5 hours is too long. When we got to 15, we could see in front of us, and there were 3 holes completely open. No rangers anywhere to be seen to help with pace of play. I can understand 1 hole open but the group was teeing offf on 16, and there was nobody on 16,17 or 18. Also the course is really not up to its normal standards, the greens clearly hadn’t been mowed and were very slow. Overall it was a very disappointing experience.
Best Course near Lexington
With a very gusty wind, the course with it's lake guarded greens, was an exciting but very enjoyable experience.
Pretty good for the fall
Bunch of old guys going slow. Course is beautiful.
Typical Golf Course These Days
I've played Big Blue several times this year and it seems this course lacks a quality golf experience. It seems the main concern of the club is just to collect your green fee. Some issues I noted.
1. Eight minute Tee Times. I've timed some 4-somes taking 17 minutes/hole. Crazy! Set to 12 min!
2. Sand Bunkers are NEVER raked I guess that would require paying someone to do that.
3. The holes on the green have the grass growing over the edge, maybe move them every couple days. Again, paying someone to do that.
4. Mow and Roll the greens. Again, pay someone to do that.
Otherwise, the course is in great shape, if they would address those 4 issues, I wound rate it excellent!
So, this course is like many these days, just collect fees and don't do the things required of a course for the player to really enjoy the round. Sure, you can play without any of the above done......but it would be better if they were. Maybe they just can't find anyone to work!
Over rated and Over played
Expecting a better than average course design and golfing experience, I was very disappointed. The pace of play was so poor on the day we played that we skipped the 11th hole and quit after the 15th hole and it was already over 4 hours. Course was in excellent condition , but the course just goes back and forth with little interest. The group ahead of us were “regulars” and after 9 they went in to get rain checks because of the slow play. Because we were just passing through that option would not have worked. There are other courses around the area that offer better deals and better golf.
Beautiful!
Course was very green and well maintained. Staff very friendly. Not too crowded.
Lots of approach shots over water
Very solid track that is the home course for the UK golf teams. The Bentgrass everywhere is nice and in good condition. Fairways are already green and look solid. The green complexes are challenging with lots of undulations. But they were rock hard and did not hold many shots.
The golf cart we had was pretty beat up and did not drive very well, especially going up the hills.
The course itself is wide open but challenging. Interesting angles on the fairways into greens. Seemed like every approach shot on the back side required a forced carry over water. Would be pretty challenging for beginners as you could not run a ball onto the green. The back nine was better than the front nine.
The eighth hole has a cool island green, and the 14th had two huge swans swimming in the lake around yet another island-like green. The fees were a touch high and might prevent me from playing it again but overall a decent value as a one off.
