The Schuss Mountain at Shanty Creek
About
In the colder months, Shanty Creek is a winter wonderland complete with more than 50 ski runs, but in the summer it offers 72 holes of championship golf. Shanty Creek's four golf courses are all distinct. The Schuss Mountain Course was ranked as one of the top public courses in the state. The layout offers a two-in-one package with a front nine that is mostly flat and a back nine that features dramatic elevation changes. The fairways are generous but bordered by dense forests. The layout also features abundant wetlands that come into play. The greens are lightning fast and there are many that are open in front, allowing easier approaches. It is no wonder this scenic and challenging course is one of northern Michigan's most popular golf courses.

Schuss mountain
This course is well maintained and the greens were great I would recommend this course
Slow Pace
Played on 6/20, not paired. Front nine went slow but after the turn it slowed a lot. Saw 8 guys on the green that were in front of the twosome in front of us! We were wondering why we had to wait at almost every tee box. Did not see any marshals so called the pro shop to let them know. Saw the marshal shortly after then pace of play picked up but it was a 5hr round. Golfers need to be reminded to fill divots and fix marks ball marks. This course is in great condition and enough of a challenge.
Love this course
Played on 6/18, not paired. Rainy day but not enough to not play. Course in great condition! Golfers need to be more involved in filling divots, fixing marks on the greens, picking up garbage, and run the rake in the bunker after hitting. Pace of play perfect. No beverage cart but a little stopping spot after the 9th under the pro shop. Staff has always been great! Course is enough of a challenge with multiple tee boxes and then the beautiful scenery makes for a great round!
Fantastic Course!
We really like this course! Staff is great, course in excellent condition! It has just enough challenge to it without becoming frustrated! Carts do not have coolers, ball/club washers, or GPS. There are clean portajohns out there. Highly recommend!
Great greens
Course was in peak condition. Played early morning in 3.5 hours. Good pace. They moved cart stand and should have done this a long time ago. Cart boy could be a little more chill. Range is ok. Have fun
Hidden gem
Played Shuah mtn last week. Course is cut out of the pine trees very up north feeling. Price was awesome, had a foursome and played in 3.5 hours. Got some great holes and very little play so great cp ditto .
Wow! That’s the title.
Just an absolutely beautiful course and very well maintained. The views are some of the best I’ve ever played.
Perfect Course, Perfect Day
This course was great despite that they just aerated the fairways. Temperature was perfect in the mid 70’s and not too many people on the course. It was a little wet from overnight sprinkling but that did not detract from the overall game and playing strategy. I will definitely play this course again when I am back in the area.
Great course
We have played Schuss Mt for years and always enjoy the well maintained course.
Always average.
It’s you run of the mill average Up north course. Very limited bar/grill… larger company now owns all the courses there and the new policies are silly. I’d only play any of these courses at a discount. So…it’s just a so/so experience. Not horrible, it just “fine”, nothing to write home about.
Greens great condition! Great pace of play.
Teed off 1020am as twosome. Played through a foursome and finished in 3 hrs 15 minutes. Greens perfect condition. Fairways needed some divots replaced . Good layout., like the back nine better. Will be back.
Quick greens. Fun course.
This course is in outstanding shape. Tee boxes, fairways, greens all top notch. The greens are very quick but putt true. Flat front nine and hilly back nine. But the back was still very fair. We were stuck behind some slow players on front but they only played nine. Thank goodness. Played back nine in 1 hour and 45 minutes while playing at a comfortable pace. You should not miss this course at Shady Creek as it is also their cheapest one - other than Summit.
Tight but fair
Played here twice this past weekend after a 3 year hiatus. The white/silver tees on Friday (several of the players were over 65) and the white tees on Sunday (5 team 4-person scramble).
Overall the course was in fine shape, the green speed was average. The entire resort went cashless last year which was one small hurdle to address. The resort does offer reverse ATM machines in which can feed cash for a prepaid debit card you can use throughout the resort.
The beverage cart sightings were few and far between though. Other than that, no issues. We will be back.
Keep wide on all the dog legs so that you've got a shot at the green on your second shot.
