Torch Course is in okay shape
With a new clubhouse about to open for both Torch and Sundance tracks we played the Torch course on a hot Sunday morning. The original course at A-ga-ming was in fine form except they decided to turn the Par 5 3rd hole into a Par 4 hole by making you lay up with an iron off the tee or attempt a 190 yard plus air carry over a pond . So go figure - it was a really tough quirky 3 shot hole before and they managed to screw the hole redesign up!! So downgrade a star for that stupidity and downgrade another star due to the complete lack of running water or suitable relief facilities (again) at check in. At least the Torch course goes by the original clubhouse at the turn...the Torch nines were reversed when Sundance was built....and there actually were running water bathrooms....and you could fill your water bottle, wet a clean towel. Normally a four star experience A-ga-ming managed to screw it up for us and many others. Hopefully next year when we return the new clubhouse will be in full operation. It's about time they stopped operating out of that dumpy trailer for almost two decades. Recommend but bring your own water.....they charge $3 a bottle and when they don't even provide clean running water to wash your hands. or even drink....that's simply unacceptable and patently ridiculous.
Great Course
This is a really fun golf course that can be a real challenge when the rough and tall grass have grown in. Greens are fair and hole layout is well done. Not a lot of water hazards, but you will find some challenging bunkers spread throughout the course.
Beautiful course with great views and a fun layout. Unfortunately the staff was fairly rude the day I went, and the course could be in better shape. With all the beautiful courses in the area, it's hard to feel like Torch is worth your time and money.
Average course with 1 view
Overall the course was alright, being so close to Torch Lake and having the name Torch for the course you would think there’d be more views from the course. Only 1 hole has a view of the lake and the others are tucked away in the woods like any other Up North course. For $70 green fees I would expect a bit more from a course, the conditions were fine, but when a course doesn’t have a cart path, that’s a bad sign. If this course was in South East Michigan it would be $35-$40 compared to $70. The carts could use an update too, for being a “resort” course and all.
Gorgeous Views/Friendly Staff
Love playing this course! I still need to try Sundance
Great views
This course had amazing views of torch lake. Hole 7 tee box will certainly leave you in amazement of the beauty of the lake.....now time to talk about golf. The course plays hard and fast, greens are fast but not hard to read. The fairways and greens were in decent shape, looked like they had a golf outing Saturday/ Sunday and we golfed on a Monday so it looked a little worn. The rough is pretty hard ground but it’s not impossible to play. We overall had a great experience playing at this course, the staff was very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this course to just about anyone.
First time - was pretty good
We like the people, the course was nice, enjoyed playing it. Greens were tough. Wished there was more water views but the course played well
As scenic as it gets
We had never played this course and actually had never played golf in Michigan but we completely lucked into this gem. We were reading golfnow reviews and thought this place sounded like a good value but we were blownaway. Even without the views the course itself was beautiful. It was in great shape and nearly every hole was isolated in the woods, but several holes also included breathtaking lake views. The restaurant at the turn and after 18 overlooked the most scenic par three, which also had a lake view, and it was overall a really memorable round of golf. The staff was helpful and great. If you’re thinking about playing here, do it. And supposedly there are multiple courses and housing, so it would seem perfect for a golf trip. I’ll definitely be back.
Northern Michigan Must See
Awesome experience. Course is beautiful and in great condition. Great staff and a very welcoming place. If in Northern Michigan, I would definitely recommend checking it out.
Always fun to play the Original course
You still have to check in at the dumpy trailer shared with the Sundance course. Build a clubhouse guys or move back to the original Torch clubhouse. Torch course in nice shape greens are of good speed and it's a pretty old school routing. The 10th hole is quirky. Always a strong challenge Torch holds your interest. Very very wet from recent rains. You have to play this course a few times so you know where your ball will bounce. Overall 3.75 stars. Recommended and play 36 by going over to Sundance in the afternoon.
Excellent Track
Writing this as a former PGA Professional in the state of Michigan. This course has to be on your short list of places to play in Northern MI! Beautiful layout that requires every club in your bag. Course conditions were private club level. Tight fairways, pure fast greens and consistently perfect bunkers. Views throughout the course were great. Very playable but challenging at the same time with a great mix of scoreable and tough holes. I can’t say enough good things about this course. Go tee it up!
Condition and layout disappointed
This was my first time playing the Torch and I do not think I will be back. In hindsight, I should have played the Sundance course. The front 9 was beautifully maintained and the layout showcased the location. When we made the turn, with the exception of hole 10, the course dropped off significantly in terms of maintenance and layout. The layout did not seem to make much sense and the fairways and greens were not in the best condition. I would consider playing at A-Ga-Ming again, but definitely not at this course.
Torched
By no-means is the torch the standard bearer at a-ga-ming, that honor goes to Sundance; however, the Torch offers a beautiful course for a little less-money than Sundance does next-door (I would still highly recommend playing Sundance over Torch).
The course was in pretty good shape, but it is a little-bit in a valley and there was some muddy spots in the fariways due to all the rain we had. My group of 16 played in a 4-man scramble here and everyone had a great time, which the copious amounts of alcohol drunk throughout the day may have played a part in. Just watch your level of intoxication because the Miller-group behind us (who were animals) got black-balled by the cart-girls for their rowdy behavior somewhere in the middle of the round.
Course is pretty tight, have to hit the fairways, but it is definitely a course where you are rewarded for your good shots.
Great golf
The course was laid out well and the views were great. Challenging yet fair, course knowlwdge would have helped on a few holes. Good price for a round, staff was very helpful, would play again. Thanks.
Worth playing
Interesting holes, course in good condition, fairly tough but, unlike other area courses we recently played, the rough was not overly punitive. Elevation changes added to the enjoyment. Par 3 #7 very scenic. The on-course restaurant is a don't miss.
Best layout!
After one round, this course jumped to my top spot of favorites. The layout is unforgettable, best course in northwest Michigan.
Awesome course, somewhat expensive
I'm not against paying a lot of money for a round, but I want my money's worth. The website and pictures make it seem like every hole is gorgeous, but that's not the case. I played The Natural the day before and some of those holes were better designed. Don't get me wrong, this is a GREAT looking course, but I'm just not sure it's worth the money. The pro-shop is lacking (and they seem to have two of them which was confusing). Pace of play was downright EXCRUCIATING!! Took two of us over 6 hours to finish 18 (without stopping for lunch)! They allow singles to play on their own and won't combine them with a 2some/3some. Thankfully the beer-cart and girl came around pretty often so we ended up drinking a lot more than playing golf. We had fun overall, but I'd rather pay for an average golf course where I can actually play golf.
