Hillcrest outing
Got a good tee time on a Thursday the day before for a reasonable price. All was great. Course was nice. A few reasons led me to not give 5 stars. One being while we were on hole 3 or 4 the maintenance crew was cutting the grass. This was about 10am. 2 of our groups balls got chewed up because they didn’t stop to let us hit. They they moved to the next hole where we had the same problem. Also, the sprinklers were going on a couple greens during the round which left it unplayable. No distance markers what so ever so have a good eye. Other than that the sand was beautiful, the greens were nice & the fairways were solid.
Country club
This is the old country club coming back. The improvements on course are fantastic. I hope you continue work on bathrooms on course and please bring back the refreshment cart!!!! With no water on course to drink it's rough. Greens at a course of this caliber should never roll under 9 stemp....
Pace of play and starter decisions
Due to a shortage of golf carts we started 45 minutes late. The starter tho it it would be a good idea to put a 4 some of walkers off ahead of us a 2 some because he said they were “sticks”. We have differing opinions of “sticks” and that is another discussion. The major problem is they didn’t have an on course Marshall so the pace of play was not acceptable (4.5-5 hours). As a matter of fact the starter said the first group off on the day let two groups play thru and it took them 4:43 hours. That promotes a gap of 3 holes and the pace never caught up. Finally we skipped 2 holes noticing there was a 5-some playing and with no on course Marshall it was never noticed. I understand there is a new owner and he has done a ton to improve the course. Need more carts and an on course Marshall for a holiday weekend!
Hurry! I hear this gem is going private!
An incredible golf course!! The oldest golf course in Kansas City.
A Donald Ross design. It’s now privately owned but still open to the public. The word around the camp fire is this place may go private. If you love Swope Memorial you will love Hillcrest!
Great course, will come back
Played this for first time. Staff was great. Course in great shape. Will come back when I’m in area. Very worth it for money. Pace of play was good for a Saturday being packed but staff was on top of it. Old club with lots of trees, if you don’t hit fairway you will have some trouble. Greens are in great shape
Great shape!
The course is in great shape! New owners have spent money wisely.
Played slow with a big crowd today.
Staff was great, but eminities limited due to COVID.
Will be back!
Interesting, nothing flat about this course
We had fun playing this course. No houses and very hilly, both positives. Conditioning left a lot to be desired, probably due to Covid and the fact that several areas were being improved at the time (several bunkers being rebuilt and yet to receive sand; however, bunkers that had sand were great). Greens were on the small side with lots of slope and undulations (stay on the low side). Limited staff (Corona) was super friendly. $4 unlimited range balls was nice. Overall, they need to cut about 2” off the ruff and drop the fee by $10 in its current condition, and I would play weekly. Nevertheless, worth playing at least once. Maybe more when the conditioning matches the green fee.
Fun & Challenging
Great old school course. New owner starting to make many improvements. New riding & push carts, white sand in traps, open to the public. A MUST PLAY for golfers looking for a change of pace on a terrific & historic course!
Not ready to be open
This course should be $15. Max. Shouldn’t be opened for play yet. No distance markers at all, no sand in traps. We still had fun but this place needs a lot of love. Heard they have a new owner. Hopefully that will being new life and I would try it again if they get the grounds better for spring.
