Fun course to play
Really like the course design some different types of holes.
Only downer was Course condition. Several fairways have large bad spots- no grass, mud holes. Some bunkers are just mud with no sand. Greens were pretty good, played very fast which I like.
Overall OK but could be better.
Great historic course to play. I was the first tee time out, finished in under 2 hours. Good value. Course still in great condition. A few wet spots in the morning. Cart path could use some love, but I’m not there to hit my shots off the cart path. Will play again.
Course just needs new cart paths and some work around the paths.
Nice old course
Love the Donald Eoss design, really follows the lay of the land. Green complexes are toigh! Don't want to ne above the hole. Great value on Hot Deals.
Back in Kansas
Expected better course conditions...
Traps unplayable, fairways overall good condition, greens rolled true but had numerous unrepaired divots and cart paths horrible...
Good layout with rolling hills but this is the first course I have played in my life that starts with a PAR 3...
Course was not busy but play was very slow...A starter and course marshall could solve this problem especially with high handicap !!!!!!! members...
Pro shop staff outstanding and that alone may bring me back...
Fairly good for been a 1st on this courae
I played yesterday 06/26 on a good Golfnow deal so the price was fairly good. 1st on this course, layout is nice lots of slopes and lies, not easy. Cart path need love but I would not judge the entire course by that. Some tee boxes need care ASAP. Fairways have hold fair even with the crazy amount of rain in KC, I’ve severe damage at other courses. Its good the course is available through GN and not only through GL. Green were tough and need care, not all had the same speed. Sand traps are awfully bad, this is a big fail on this course, only 2 traps were raked and in good shape. This is a no brainer to fix.
Staff was friendly
All in all fairly good and I was pleased with the day. On a good GN deal I’ll come back
Visually the course is great
I enjoyed the course visually. The front nine had tired fareways with a large amount of thin, bare spots from water runoff etc. l would suggest aeration, over seeding and watering on a consistent basis. The back nine was in much better shape. The traps were thin, hard. Needs tic. Other than the golf rate on Golfnow rate , surprised no Senior rates and the rate of $40 is bit Pricey. I would play again based on golfnow $$$.
Donald Ross Design
KC has 2 historic courses designed by class architects: Hillcrest by Donald Ross and Swope Memorial by AW Tillinghast. If you love to play golf, you need to play these.
Hillcrest is not maintained at its peak. It is maintained adequately enough for the golf lover to appreciate Ross’ design.
Swope is maintained by the City at a higher level and is a must to appreciate Tillinghast’s design. It is described as a junior Bethpage Black.
We are fortunate to have both of these classic turn of the century courses in our back yard.
Course shape just ok. Lots of sand traps with no sand just dirt. Fairways awful thin.greens good. It seems like all great life courses have gone downhill since taking over. Green fees way to expensive for the shape the course is in.
Love it!
Love me some Donald Ross! Thank you GreatLife for saving this old gem!!!
Save your Money
One of the great layouts in Kansas City. Unfortunately the course maintenance is terrible. The fairways and rough have not been maintained.
It’s a course managed by Greatlife. I’m learning that a good rule of thumb is, if It’s a Greatlife course you should not expect much.
Poor rate of play on hot deals
Second time in a row I’ve played on a weekday hot deal and rate of play has been way too slow. Seemed overbooked.
Hillcrest Golf Course
A very challenging and difficult track and always a lot of fun. Especially the 235 yard number one par 3 hole.
Ross Course Challenges
Donald Ross was known for his difficult designs and Hillcrest fits the mold. Sloping fairways, steep hillsides and nasty sand traps make this course a challenge. The senior tees at 5860 made few holes inviting because of shortness and elevation was a constant issue. Poor distance markers make the course even more difficult so bring your technology or be prepared to guess frequently. Still an interesting round awaits.
