Very nice layout
I really liked the layout, very nice and mostly in great shape. The greens had been aerated a couple weeks ago and still were slow and sandy. They were working on a couple of tee boxes so you had to play from the Blue tees, not a big deal. One thing that frustrated me is on number 9 the sprinklers were on and they didn't turn them off so I couldn't finish the hole even though there were several workers on the hole and the next tee area. Overall a nice course that I would like to play again.
Favorite course in Kansas City
This course has it all. By far my favorite course in Kansas City. It is a very demanding course with a lot of character. You have to control your ball and be prepared to scramble. Every time I'm in KC I play here.
Course Use To Be Nice
Pro Shop employees aren't real friendly. Guy making my hot dog shoved it towards me and said, "go pay over there." I felt they thought they were better than me. Played with my 17 yr old son and he felt the same way. We'll spend our weekly golf money at another course. Greens were in bad shape and they still charge full price. Golf cart path needs replaced. Potholes and chunks of asphalt missing everywhere. You can't hit your driver on the range.
Bad shape and poor customer service
The guy working the pro shop was not helpful and also not friendly. I showed up early and checked in and found the guy to be very abrupt and not helpful when asking about the course. The guy I played with showed up about 10 minutes after I did and had the same experience. They had a beverage cart but we didn't see her at all on the front 9 and she didn't show up until the 13th hole and that was the last time we saw her. 1 time in 4.5 hours? Greens had just been sanded but there was waaaay too much sand! It made playing unenjoyably. I won't be going back. Too many good courses in town to pay 55 bucks to play a course where you have zero customer service.
Course in good shape BUT......
We got stuck behind two foursomes that were beginners. Too bad they dont check handicaps. 2.5 hours to play 9 and we quit. I will be back though!
Memory Lane Golf
I was looking for a course to play while in KC on spring break with my two sons and saw Hillcrest on Golf Now. I was a caddy at Hillcrest 35 years ago so was excited about the prospects of a round down memory lane and our experience did not disappoint.
Hillcrest is in early spring condition but the course will only get better as the weather gets warmer. The greens are in very good condition, rolling fast and true. Tree lined and old school
A fine old 1916 course with great features
A thinking golfer's course, not long but every shot needs precision... a challenge in windy weather!
Excellent Course
Hillcrest was excellent, as usual. The course is in great condition. The tee boxes were a bit worn, but the fairways and greens were excellent. The staff was very nice, and helpful. The carts are nice, and have GPS, which is always helpful.
The course itself is pretty challenging. While many of the holes are pretty straight shots, the fairways are a bit narrow, and if you hit an errant drive, you'll either end up in the woods or a fairway of another hole. This doesn't take away from the fun of the course, but it can make for a long day if you're a high handicap like me.
I can highly recommend Hillcrest to golfers of all skill levels, especially for the value (I paid $25 for the round on Golfnow). This is the third time I've played at this course, and it's been great every time.
I like the course layout.
The pace of play was fast (3 hours) because I got out as a single and the first tee time on a Saturday morning. I played the back tees, which is plenty long for me (6800 yards), but it was still an enjoyable round. I had heard Hillcrest is known for their Par 3s, and it is true. Holes #1 and #11 required a driver from the back tees. Hole #14 is a beautiful Par 3 over a lake. Also memorable was #10 -- a 621 yard Par 5 that took everything in my bag to reach in 3. The greens were a little shaggy, but probably expected for November in KC. It's pretty neat having a Donald Ross design in KC.
Good value
Had a 4pm tee time in early October. Had the entire course to ourselves. The course was in good condition given the time of the year. It was a typical inner city course....tight, hilly and surrounded by trees. I enjoyed it and will come back. For the price, it's a great value.
Hidden Gem
Since this club was opened to the public a couple years ago I've played 3 times and LOVED it each time. I went on a saturday at 3pm this time and the course was empty. Course was in excellent shape and played very well. I'll be back
This is a great old course
The course is in decent condition considering the lack of play and members
Donald Ross saved
A true Gem of KC. Go and play it. A true 600 + yard par five that dates back to the original course when they played with hickory shafts. An excellent test of all your shot making skills.
Challenging
Donald Ross course. Very hilly and sloped. Well maintained. An interesting challenge.
Challenging course - Average value
The course was challenging enough for an experiencded golfer. I would say the course was in good shape, not great but pretty good. Nice carts with GPS and a nice enough staff. Did not like the amount of fivesomes allowed on the course. Overall as compaired to all other courses in the area that I play this was fun and challenging and an average value. Seems you pay a premium price for the nice carts with GPS and an averge shape course.
Nice layout, with many trees.
Old course in the KC area. Nicely maintained. Well worth the play.
Nice looking course, but a very tight track.
Nice looking course, but a very tight track. I will play it again.
Historical and up to date!
A long lost gem. We will DEFINITELY be back. Friendly staff, and a well-maintained course. Have paid double for courses not on par with this.
Pace of play was great.
Teed off at 12:15 as a twosome and played in 3.5 hours. Course condition improved over last year. Very enjoyable afternoon.
Great greens. Fairways and rough could use attention.
Greens were perfect. Some dry spots on fairway and rough was shady in spots. Overall, a very good course.
