Nice terrain, lots of elevation. Many trees.
The Hillcrest course is set in rolling terrain and has many full grown trees. The layout of the holes makes club selection critical to successful play.
Tough course, drainage issues, fast greens
I've played this course twice, once in the middle of the summer (record dry summer) and once in November, and both times the course was extremely wet. They must have some drainage issues, because on many holes the area around the green is very wet, which makes it a bit frustrating trying to chip on. Lots of change in elevation and heavily sloped fairways make it a tough course, so don't expect a normal, flat shot on many holes. Greens were in good shape and very fast, but greens are small so make sure you're accurate. Fairways weren't in great condition (mostly due to previously mentioned drainage issues). Overall this course is pretty good for what I paid ($25), although I'd probably rather pay a little more and play somewhere else next time. Course is probably not a good choice for a beginning golfer
course had beautiful fall vistas from several tees.
Fall maintenance efforts were ongoing during this playing experience, and lessened the overall enjoyablility.
A one of a kind just south of the city
Playing the Hearland Golf Club on Sunday the 21st was a real treat. Beautiful rolling hills, undulating greens, and a great price make this a must play in the KC area. Golfers better have every shot in their bag tuned up and ready to play at the Heartland
Donald Ross
The greens are terrific. old school layout. Sure its seen better days, but where else can you play a Donald Ross original for under $40?
Great course. Needs more staff
This is a great course and I loved to play it when it was a private club. It is a Donald Ross design and has a lot of history. It is a shame that the Country Club failed because it is obvious the current owners can't generate enough revenue to operate it as a first class facility. They were clearly understaffed as they had no marshalls on the course so play was very slow. We had to wait before we could tee off because they didn't have enough carts.
Course was in good shape and the greens were very fast. I would go back because we got a great price.
Keeps you thinking
Great traditional older style course with rolling fairways, each lined with mature trees. This course makes you think while on the tee box. Not only do you have to hit fairly straight, you have to figure how to minipulate the sloping fairways as many slope left to right and right to left. The green when last played, were very fast and had subtle breaks that need close attention. Great golf course that make you think from tee to green. Only draw back, not many golf attendents present to help keep the pace moving at times.Beatiful golf course, I recommond this one.
Well kept fairways and greens
It was my first time playing the course. This was a tough course with blind doglegs, rolling fairways and uneven lies. I played Tuesday in the early afternoon and only a few folks were out. Got through the course in less than 3 hours. I will be back to settle the score... hopefully with a better score...
Previously private course is worth a look
It's the only Donald Ross design in Missouri, in great shape, I've never been held up, a fun layout with enough challenge to be exciting, and the GolfNow price was phenomenal.
Difficult course.
Hard course, very hilly. The new management is trying to get it into shape. Greens and fairways were in OK shape, rough was scary.
Maintenance needed
I had to change carts 3 times. They are redoing the 9th green. There are other areas that need to be restored. The course has good bones but requires more than current management is giving it to recapture its considerable potential.
Greens in worse shape than the 9-hole exec muni down the hill
No need for such high rough at a course that should be set up for fun and fast rounds.
Course under repair
The back nine were the only holes open at the time. Made the round of golf repetitive, two rounds of 9 on the back nine. THe staff was decent but not overly helpful. The course was under repair and could have been in better shape. I would recommend the course only if the entire course is open and ready for play.
Good course - poor customer relations
We played this course on a Friday morning. There was mowing and construction activity around every green through about the 14th hole. The activity and noise were very distracting. While I know grass has to be cut, this work should be started before the first tee time and progress from 1 to 18 so most of it is ahead of the golfers. Encountering mowing on the 5th hole at 9:00 is inexcusable.
Frustrating Saturday
Went out on a busy Saturday. There were no carts available when we arrived an hour early and therefore we couldn't go to the range. They were unwilling to accommodate rides to the range. After an hour of putting a cart was available 2 minutes prior to our tee time. Once the round started, play was slow and course conditions marginal.
