Mattawang Golf Club
About
Mattawang Golf Club has changed very little since it first opened in 1960. The traditional layout has withstood the test of time as a challenging but playable layout. The course was designed to blend seamlessly into the natural setting while still testing your shot-making skills. You won’t find any man-made water hazards or artificial mounding on this golf course, instead you’ll be challenged by natural streams and ponds and mature evergreens. At first glance, the layout is seemingly wide open, but don’t let your guard down because the fairways are actually quite tight and many of them are strategically lined with trees. In keeping with the time it was built, the greens are smaller than those you would find on most modern golf courses and heavily protected by sand traps. Over the years, Mattawang Golf Club has built a reputation for having some of the well maintained putting surfaces in the area.

The course was in decent shape considering our lack of rain. Tee boxes and greens were excellent. The only negative thing i can say is that they should put on their website that they dont allow carts on the fairways. I can understand why but i had an older family member with me that wasn't able to do all the walking.
Not worth the price
Tee boxes and greens in good condition. But that’s about it. Fairways and grass areas burnt out from no water.
No drink cart or water coolers on entire course. Was told no water due to Covid. Really?? Every other course in NJ has water now. Just lazy at this point. Definitely Not worth what they charge.
Thanks so much Airball
We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review, nice to see you enjoyed the day!
Great, but Expensive, place to hone skills
Not a place for the "golf club" pampering; is a place to play & practice. Wide fairway roughs, reasonably small sand traps. hard to lose balls; great for practicing long irons.
No refreshment cart or shack at the turn, so pack your own sustenance before teeing off.
Went in time of heatwave / drought; but greens constantly slowed up, somehow.
Thank you it is nice to see you enjoyed the greens.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. It seems like your ratings would suggest you would recommend the course but you did not, would love to know more? Enjoy the remainder of the season.
Dry Dead Grass
This course is bare bones. Driving range is on a slope so distance might be challenging. They also have tee mats. No restaurant or bar cart or bar to buy beer. Carts were limited to the rough only, no fairways. The carts were actually fast- best part of the round. The fairways were patchy but for the most part green. The rough was super dead dry grass. The greens were the best part of the course- fairly quick and well maintained. Clearly they put emphasis on the greens and lacked elsewhere.
Thanks for making the trip from Wilmington. Your weather pattern over the last six weeks has been very different then ours. After attending the BMW Championship yesterday in Wilmington, it is very clear why you are surprised by our dry conditions. We have been limited on water use for over a month now, thus much of what you point out is due to our severe weather.
Even with the lack of rain the greens and tee boxes are in great shape, they really take care of this course!
Thanks Bob, we appreciate the kind words. We are trying but this summer has been very tough. 2/10's of an inch or rain in this heat over 7 weeks is not near enough.
Hope to see you again soon.
We are glad to see you enjoyed the day, thanks!
Golf Fun
I have to say that this course has some of the best kept greens I've ever played on. The management is doing its best to keep the course green despite local water restrictions. Cart path only to preserve the fairways adds time to the round but none the less, in the long run the course will benefit from this. Play this challenging course.
Thank you very much, it is great to see you appreciate what our grounds crew has been dealing with! Hope to see you again soon!!
Too expensive for what it offers..
Some fairways and some areas surrounding the greens are very dry and hard...difficult to hit from.
The course has no water on it. Once you tee-off, you have no way to buy/ refill water bottles till the end of the round. ..this is particularly problematic on extremely hot days...they should keep some coolers/ water dispensers across the course.
The greens are in good shape though....holes 15-18 present a very interesting finish!
We appreciate your thoughts.
Just an FYI - the pro shop has all the drinks you could need. We also have a water fountain for those to fill their coolers, or water bottles. For many years we had water on the course, that is not allowed any longer.
We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review, hope to see you again soon!
Longtime fan, not in good shape
I am usually a big fan of Mattawang as it is reasonably affordable and a nice, open course you can easily get on. It's a simple course with no real substantial clubhouse and no beverage cart. The pace of play is average (4.5 hours on a Saturday morning in the summer). Unfortunately, the course itself right now is in bad shape. Everything off the fairway is dead and bone dry and even part of the fairway are loosing their green. The tee boxes are "okay" and the greens are fine, but very slow as they seem to be not cutting and rolling them to try and preserve them in the dry summer. I will gladly go back, but maybe not during this dought.
I clarify, I really like this course and hihgly reccomend it. I'm merely commenting that the course IS a victim of the drought right now. There' s literally nothing they can do. I don't want people going here one time or readything that it is dry and thinking it is the facility/management's fault.
Sorry to read your disappointment, I am not sure where you live but we have had our most severe drought in over thirty years. The crew is doing their best under the heat and restrictions set forth.
Great Greens
Great greens as always, rolled very true. Fairway was patchy in some areas and rough was mostly straw/patchy due to lack of rain. Bunkers had new sand that was thick and heavy put played true. Carts were to be driven in rough, on paths only as they didn’t wants carts on fairway due to drought conditions.
Get your drinks (Gatorade/water) at the beginning of the round as there isn’t a cart coming around nor a halfway stand.
Hidden gem
I think it’s a great course. Open and challenging. Surprisingly it’s in great shape with all this heat we’ve had ! I nice hidden gem!
Thanks for the kind words, the grounds crew has been battling some tough weather over the last month. Glad to see you appreciate their work!
Fun round
Play at 730 on Sunday. The course was dry on the sides of the fairway but they did a great job maintaining the fairway and greens. Great fast round of 4hrs with a even pace of play.
Will be back again.
We appreciate you making the trip from the NJ shore to join us for a weekend round. Glad you enjoyed the course.
Thanks for leaving your thoughts.
