About
Mattawang Golf Club has changed very little since it first opened in 1960. The traditional layout has withstood the test of time as a challenging but playable layout. The course was designed to blend seamlessly into the natural setting while still testing your shot-making skills. You won’t find any man-made water hazards or artificial mounding on this golf course, instead you’ll be challenged by natural streams and ponds and mature evergreens. At first glance, the layout is seemingly wide open, but don’t let your guard down because the fairways are actually quite tight and many of them are strategically lined with trees. In keeping with the time it was built, the greens are smaller than those you would find on most modern golf courses and heavily protected by sand traps. Over the years, Mattawang Golf Club has built a reputation for having some of the well maintained putting surfaces in the area.

Fabulous condition
Have been playing Mattawang for years. Course is in fabulous condition. Best In recent memory. Fairways nicely mowed. Greens were perfect. Pace of play as a twosome was 3 hours 15 minutes on a Tuesday afternoon. Enjoyable day and the staff was great as always.
Almost a very good course!
The course was as expected after heavy rain in the week before, but should definitely be a good challenge when in prime condition. Some bunkers not playable and spots here and there that could use some draining.
Why they have some tee-boxes in front of greens making the group behind you hit their ball over you, I just cannot understand!
During the first 9, the marshall drove between groups just to make sure that the carts were only on the path. If he did any attempts to speed things up, he was in vain, as the two 3 person groups in front of us kept playing as they had all the time in the world. Hence, almost 5 hours playing-time :( but the sun was out and in good company so all in all a good day
Sorry you chose to play golf after heavy storms. We were forced to be cart path only, the bunkers had too much water for pumps and we were also busy. All related to 'Mother Nature'.
Comments about tee boxes in front of greens is just not true. There are no holes as you describe.

Sunday fun
Played on Sunday morning. No rain shower till 1030.then 5 minutes and we were good. The greens were little bumpy but okay. The rest of the coarse was in great shape.

This course has value for money. The course provides enough yards to hit nearly all clubs in the bag.
Play here as often. Bring your cold water cooler, there's no cart drinks on the course. Staff are great and the course provides enough challenges to keep you wanting to break your target.

Course conditions
The greens seemed to have been aerated a few days before we played. The tee boxes and fairways were in great shape. Always a great time at Mattawang!!

Back 9 closed
Always a great course, unfortunately the back 9 is still closed and the greens were recently aerated but still in great condition.
Still closed?? The back nine was closed for 7 hours one day only to do the course work. Enjoy the season!

Nice layout
Always in great shape, real sand in the bunkers, none of that washed out hard pan. Narrow fairways but not a lot of trees so it’s relatively easy to find errant shots. Small driving range for warming up. Wish they had a bar/grill/snack bar. Just a good day of golf.

Great public course
Friendly staff and fun course. Carts are kinda pricy ($20/person)
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the course. I think you will find the price of the carts to be average. Most clubs include the price of the cart in with the greens fee. We give golfers the choice to walk or ride on weekends and all through the week. Enjoy 2025!

Great Place to Play During the Offseason
We travel down to Mattawang from NJ’s most northern county, Sussex, during the offseason because the greens are kept open all year and the conditions are very good considering the time of year.
We greatly appreciate you making the long journey to Mattawang in the off season. Hopefully, the weather allows us a lot of nice days this winter and into spring.

We try to play here frequently. Course is always in good shape, better than a lot of the county courses. Good pace of play.
