Bowling Green Golf Club
About
Bowling Green Golf Club is in the heart of northern New Jersey, surrounded by miles of idyllic countryside. An abundance of mature oaks and towering red pines characterizes the scenic course. This quick, shady layout is a great round for walkers. The golf course has a classic links design that is easily played in less than four hours. Like most traditional links courses, the gently undulating terrain has the perfect pitch and roll. It also provides each hole with unique challenges that require accuracy and strategy. Trees heavily line the fairways, presenting some of the course's most formidable challenges. Bowling Green Golf Club's front nine is slightly more forgiving than the back nine, which incorporates the natural ponds and wetlands on a few holes. There are also some tricky doglegs to contend with.

6th Tee Photo submitted by agurango on 05/24/2013
Fabulous course
I've played Bowling Green at least 6-10 per season and its always in great shape. The started, (Ed) is cordial and accommodating. Even those that are grooming the course while I'm playing quickly move out of range. My round has never taken more than 4 hours because that have a ranger that pushes slow play along. Only one hole layout, (4) is a bummer. It has a 90 degree dog leg. Tough to hit the green in 2.
pace
For a golf course, whose website emphizes, a 4hr 10 min round, they failed misarably. We teed off about 10 minutes late (we were on time), and the round took just under 5 hours.
If you are going to promote pace of play, then I would expect someone (anyone), to make sure that happens.
Beautiful wooded course
We played early. Pace of play was great. Played as a twosome and finished in 3 hours. That's right 3 hrs without rushing.
Good Condition, Good Layout
Took a chance as a single and it worked out for me, hooked up with 3 guys in their late 40's (I'm 66) who came to play golf. One guy was a 7 handicap. That particular day everything was perfect. Weather, pace of play (4 hours) condition of course all excellent. If you can hit the ball straight this course will suit you. Otherwise you will get frustrated. Some narrow fairways, doglegs, water, and woods make this course challenging. The greens played pretty fast and there are plenty of sand traps guarding them. Be sure to play from the appropriate tee box or the course will play too long for most golfers. I think it's an excellent course but overpriced.
Cart paths only?
Wouldn't it have been nice for them to let us know that it was cart path only. We may have chosen to walk if we knew. We only knew because an older gentleman drive back to the starter and asked where he could get a flag for his cart as he was not able physically to walk. Course was in really nice shape. It is always a fun round of golf at Bowling Green. It might have been nice if the half way house had remained open when we made the turn. The cart girls made 2 passes and then ended her day. But all in all an enjoyable experience
Well kept course with some challenging holes.
Played after heavy thunderstorms the night before so we were regulated to the cart paths. Unlike a lot of courses, these paths are smooth and well taken care of. Course drainage was great considering the amount of rain. Balls still traveled and the greens were consistent and were almost dry. Some tough water holes if you can't drive the ball. Pace was a bit slow but not outrageous.
Absolutely Terrible!
First off, the rules that the starter provides are absolutely ridiculous. He said 90 degrees with the carts (I never understood this stupid rule, because even if you're going to be riding in the fairway anyway). He said no riding the golf carts under the trees. Are you kidding me? Let me state that the fairways and rough were not in good shape. This course prides itself on it's course conditions, but it's just not there. The tee boxes are chewed up and very very weedy (The fairways and rough are weedy too by the way. This course also prides itself on its absolutely wonderful 4 hour pace of play. The pace of play here is awful. A Sunday morning, waiting on every shot, with hackers everywhere. It was absolutely awful. The staff here have very cold personalities. The ranger told our group on the 4th hole that there is a group coming up behind you, pick it up (Yet he didn't say anything about the group ahead of us that was looking for their ball for 20 minutes). If I did not make a phone call to the clubhouse to bring out a ranger, our round would have easily been close to six hours.
Such an overrated course.
This course very challenging from tee to green
A pleasant surprise, Bowling Green exists as a sort of hidden gem, but purely because of location, not popularity. The course was very crowded, due in part to Father's Day weekend, but the pace was ok all things considered. Very few holes have any margin for error off the tee, as you are often faced with some kind of woods, tree line or water on each side of the fairway. That makes for a challenging, but rewarding experience if you can keep your drives and long irons straight. The fairways and greens were in excellent shape, with a pretty unforgiving rough. The greens were fast and undulating and required a precise handle of speed and accuracy to be successful from a scoring perspective. I will be back to challenge Bowling Green again.
a fun layout, a nice walk and a few 3 putts
The course was very gettable from the blues if you stayed on or near the fairway. Very slick greens with counterintuitive breaks here and there (due to grain I think). All in all some of the most fun greens I've played in the tri-state area. This was my first time playing BG and you need some local knowledge on a number of holes. There are several holes where you need to hit less than driver and some where from the tee you can't even tell which way they dog leg. Lots of water, much of it in play, some of it blind. The course was very well laid out for walking. Oh and the 18th hole is an uphill par 6 (they call it a par 5 but ... ;)
Overall a fun layout, a nice walk and a few 3 putts
pretty course---many tree lined holes
pace was a little slow[about 1/2 longer than it should be]. Everything else was very nice
Missed Expectations
Love the course, played it many times over the years... on this occasion the greens were awfully slow... spoilt what should have been a great day... would not have been an issue, but expect a lot better for a $100
Challenging
Played on a chilly May Day. Staff was very friendly and the pace of play was good. Most fairways are lined with tall trees in either side requiring an accurate tee shot. 18th hole is especially challenging, close to 590yrds uphill!
Solid choice.
Have played this course for several years as has my wife. Easy to walk if you are so inclined. Very woman-friendly. That's coming from my wife. Water comes into play only on two holes which is a big plus for her. Challenging course but you can score low. Tough final hole - long 580 yard par 5 uphill most of the way. Very park-like.
one of my favorite courses
Came in as a single and hooked up with three nice guys. Had a great time on a great course on a nice day
Fun and challenging
Course is always in at least good condition. Tight tree lined fairways. Looking for a quick round this is the place. Couple of the guys in pro shop can have attitudes. Could use some help with their manners when it comes to customer relations. Bob the starter is always helpful and smiling...great guy! Fun and challenging course
Great diversity of holes!
Course was in excellent shape, firm fast greens. However, out group had difficulty getting the ball to the hole in long uphill puts. Maybe intl the grain. Very well run, pace of play excellent on a crowded Sunday morning. Enjoyed the hybrid blue white tee combination. 18 is simply a beast, 550 uphill! Playing again this weekend.
mind over cold
Course was in good shape. Remember it's still early spring however I didn't see any hole improvements. The course gets more difficult as the leaves on trees creates narrow fairways . Over all operation is well managed.
great old school golf course
Greens are fast and consistent for a public course. People are always nice. No gimmicky holes just straight forward old school golf course with some tight fairways. I always club down when I play this course. Very walkable.
Bowling Green - Early March
Well managed course - nice greens
A Great Course
The only thing keeping me from giving this course a five star rating is just a few bald spots in the rough or fairway but other than that this course is great.
I played this course earlier in the day but it was worth waking up early to get out to this hidden gem. This course is in excellent condition with the fairways running like a carpet and the greens always receptive but rolling true. This course challenges you to be patient on some holes but gives you the green light on most par 5's, most reachable in 2 except for the long finishing hole but it does allow you to post some low scores. I thoroughly enjoy this course and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite courses in the area, if you have a chance to play this course for less than 40$ take it and I can guarantee you won't regret it.

The 90 degree rule is an excellent rule, particularly when the grasses are stressed as they have been in this heat a drought. It scatters the carts so the fairway is not worn at a particular entry/exit place. Some courses are not allowing carts in fairways at all this summer because of the drought and heat.
It has been a miserable year for golf course superintendents. It is all but impossible to keep things green with bent grass and not have weeds encroach. Many supers have to choose to save their greens rather than water the rough or in some cases the fairway.
The writer of comment above. seems to have little respect or understanding for the golf course. Carts under trees? Of course not!!
