About
River Vale Country Club (formerly known as Bergen Hills Country Club.) sprawls across the gently rolling hills of northeast New Jersey. It has been ranked on Golf Digest's list of "Best Places to Play," but it still manages to remain one of Bergen County's most well kept secrets. You'll hardly ever run into crowds on this golf course. The layout has a classic design that incorporates a variety of elevation changes. Tricky uphill and downhill lies will be your biggest challenge on this layout. Strategically placed bunkers lurk beside the greensides and there are several holes where water hazards come into play, including the par-5 fifth, which has a lake on either side of the green. River Vale a tight golf course that demands accuracy and while it's not overly formidable, your skills will definitely be put to the test.

Course is not for hi-handicap golfers.
It will destroy your confidence if you think you're a player.
Great Go-To Option in Bergen County
The course is in pretty good shape for the start of the season, and River Vale usually keeps the course very nice throughout the year.
Greens were fast in April, and hilly in areas, and the course is also pretty wide open, which made the round comfortably challenging.
They have a few places to get warmed up, with a chipping area, which many course don’t have. The amenities are great, a convenient food stop in between the front and back nine, very good food for before/afetr the round and a full bar.
Can’t go wrong if you’re looking for a relaxing, convenient round of golf.
Rainy day golf
It had rained all morning but the course was in really good shape. Not a lot of people out on the course which made pace of play great. For the beginning of the golf season, course is in really good shape
First Golf Day of 2026
Finally able to get outside to play and River Vale CC was in really good shape after a brutal winter. some holes had tee box maintenance going on but it was not an issue at all. fairways and greens were in very good condition.

Perfect level of challenge. Great conditions especially for late march. Absolutely coming back

Great time was had by everyone. Course was in great shape. Greens were very fast
PACE OF PLAY
3 HOURS TO PLAY NINE HOLES. Stuck behind the slowest group ever and the ranger has the nerve to say WE NEED TO SPEED IT UP. We sat and waited on every tee box and every shot the entire round. Like I said, 3 HOURS to play 9 holes. First and last time here.
River Vale on nice early fall week day
I've played here a few times over the years. The course is somewhat difficult for me as I am 65. I played the whites and did not have problem with distances. Would be a difficult course for me to walk. The course conditions are always very good and the greens are faster than the municipals that I play. Pace of play was good even though we were a twosome sandwiched between 2 foursomes. Only had to wait a couple of times for a few minutes. $100.00 is steep for a weekday and there was no senior discount. Staff is always friendly.

Another Gem Day
Another beautiful day and out on course thats crowded as usual but pace is a little slow but okay. Course is in great condition and greens are moderately
difficult but manageable. Overall great day paired with some regulars who helped navigate.
Awesome Layout and in perfect condition
Late morning foursome on a Sunday. Pace was great and course conditions were outstanding. Greens were fast and challenging which led to quite a few 3 putts!
A challenging and beautiful course
A course I would love to play again.
It is,not easy- It is a challenging course., but one that makes me want to take on the challenge once more...
Tight challenging short course
The course is not overly long but you must keep the ball in the fairway. Lots of blind tee shots and well protected tough greens. Good time
We got out first after a rain delay and finished in 3.5 hours
