Nice course
One of the nicest courses I've played and definitely the best value for the money
Nice Course for a Sunday round
Looking for a last minute course to play on a Sunday morning and found Westport. Course is nice and was surprisingly not busy for such a nice day. Layout has a number of dog leg lefts which didn't play to my game. Also some blind water on three of the holes however they have signs on the tee boxes letting you know how far it is to the hazard. Overall a fun morning and we were able to get 18 holes completed in 3 hours.
Great Golf Course
I had not played Westport, since the late 70's. I'm glad I did. This course requires good course management and a variety of shotmaking ability. The only reason I did not give it a complete 10 was the greens were a little hairy at the time I played. So far as a true test and thinking man's course I give it very high marks!!!
Leave your Driver at home
Way too many holes that require a short iron (6 or 7 iron) off the tee box that leads to a long iron (or hybrid) approach shot. It got frustrating.
Pretty cool course
I really liked this course. Had some mild challenges for a second year golfer like myself. It was not overwhelming, but also not boring. I think the greens were very well maintained and I love the different promotions and specials they offer. The staff was very nice and attentive. I will be back next week!
Not A Bomber's Paradise
Played on a Sunday morning. Course was packed, but that is to be expected. Weather has taken it's toll on the course. Thin spots in many fairways; some tee boxes were OK, others weren't. The greens were the real issue. There were many greens that had large areas of bare patches. In addition to that, the greens were rolling at about a 4. It was impossible to get any putts to the hole. I can only assume the greens were that shaggy due to the weather, but it was jarring nevertheless.
As far as course layout goes, Westport is quite an interesting one. I am by no means a long hitter, but I only hit driver on 6 holes the entire round. There are many doglegs and layup holes, and a few holes where you will hit a longer club into the green than what you hit off of the tee. The tee shot on #1 is a little odd. It's a blind downhill shot with a water hazard in the landing area. You have to be precise with this shot. This course is right on Lake Norman, but you never actually see any of the lake while playing the course.
Nice course with some interesting holes.
Played on a Monday. I made a reservation as a single and got fixed up with a threesome of pretty bad golfers. They were nice fellas, but all shot around 100 or so, which made the pace of play slow for my group... we let 2 groups play through because we were too slow. We played from the white tees and I shot an easy 82.
Course layout: The course has a nice mix of holes... long and short par 3's, long and short par 4's, long and short par 5's. It has some water hazards, some bunkers, some important OB lines (That being said, I didn't find any water or sand that day. ) The course has quite a few doglegs which make your drives tricky. It also has holes with good elevation changes and blind shots.
The course conditions when I played weren't great, but didn't bother me too much. There are several places where the fairways/rough are being repaired and if you end up there you just take a free drop, no big deal. But the greens had some damage to them that did affect putting from time to time. One of the guys I played with made a good putt that hit one of those sandy patches and it bounced and died well before it got to the hole. But like I said, it didn't really affect me that much and as I recall it was just a few holes.
It does have a decent putting green, and nice new carts with coolers on the carts. It also has a pool table in the men's locker room.
All in all I had a good time there and plan to go back in a couple of weeks.
Course nice
We did not get to play because of bad weather!
People nice weather was bad , lightening in skies
Greens need work and better maintenance
The layout is tough for never playing. Alot of blind shots and not the necessary bells to signal the group behind you that you're clear. Maybe cut the grass a little shorter and sand greens to help grass grow.
Course needs serious help
Tee boxes need work, dirt all over. Greens are absolute trash. Basically like putting in the fairway with sand thrown all over. Fairways are trash. This course is as dry as a desert. The layout is great. If maintence was better this course could be 5 stars.
Not one I'll play again
Really hard to find grass to play off of at times. The Bermuda grass has died in a lot of areas. The greens had the same problem...
Might play it again next year....
The staff at the pro shop had an attitude, maybe I won't play it again!!!
Good Beginner's Course
Overall, I came to Westport because I live in the area and it had a good price. But I was a little unimpressed by the course conditions. However, the back nine was much better conditions than the front nine. For a course that was recently renovated, I guess I expected much better
rough course
The course is in need of water. Fairways are like playing on asphalt. Greens are hard fast and dry. Bunkers are in great shape. I won't be back until they get lots of rain.
this is a really nice layout
not very plush..a little rough but worth $20 to $25 dollars
Surprisingly poor condition
Played Westport with three others this weekend. I was so disappointed in the surprisingly poor condition of the course, especially compared to the last time I played it last year. The course is truly suffering from a lack of routine maintenance. Many of the tee boxes were in horrible condition, with little or no grass. Most of the fairways were just as bad, and you had to move the ball several club lengths to find even a small bit of grass to hit from unless you enjoy hitting off of hard-pan. This was extremely sad to see, as the growing conditions this spring have been good as evidenced by other courses in the area. The greens were fairly grainy, but did roll true. Bunkers were okay.
Clubhouse staff were very humorless and sour -- maybe they aren't pleased with the course conditions as well.
Overall, this was a very disappointing course, and I can't recommend it in its present shape.
Nice layout
First time playing here since 93, the coarse is very challenging, and the greens are very good. ..fairways were a little bare in places. ..but considering the cold spring, not bad..
Not worth the time
Fairways in terrible shape...greens average. Staff so so...strange clubhouse...expected better for the money
Shawn
Nice well kept course. Greens a tad slow but during this time of the year that's expected. Would rather have true slow greens that fast destroyed ones. Overall good value
Nice layout
Course was very wet after a few days of rain. This made it very difficult to manage. I would like to come back and play it when it's dry. Staff was very friendly and helpful
Would like to play in the summer
i would love to play during better weather, the course was wet, greens we're in great condition. The course can take the drive out of your hands on more than a few holes. This means using a long iron on the tee and into the green. Overall the course was fun and I look to play again this spring\summer.
