this is a really nice layout
not very plush..a little rough but worth $20 to $25 dollars
Surprisingly poor condition
Played Westport with three others this weekend. I was so disappointed in the surprisingly poor condition of the course, especially compared to the last time I played it last year. The course is truly suffering from a lack of routine maintenance. Many of the tee boxes were in horrible condition, with little or no grass. Most of the fairways were just as bad, and you had to move the ball several club lengths to find even a small bit of grass to hit from unless you enjoy hitting off of hard-pan. This was extremely sad to see, as the growing conditions this spring have been good as evidenced by other courses in the area. The greens were fairly grainy, but did roll true. Bunkers were okay.
Clubhouse staff were very humorless and sour -- maybe they aren't pleased with the course conditions as well.
Overall, this was a very disappointing course, and I can't recommend it in its present shape.
Nice layout
First time playing here since 93, the coarse is very challenging, and the greens are very good. ..fairways were a little bare in places. ..but considering the cold spring, not bad..
Not worth the time
Fairways in terrible shape...greens average. Staff so so...strange clubhouse...expected better for the money
Shawn
Nice well kept course. Greens a tad slow but during this time of the year that's expected. Would rather have true slow greens that fast destroyed ones. Overall good value
Nice layout
Course was very wet after a few days of rain. This made it very difficult to manage. I would like to come back and play it when it's dry. Staff was very friendly and helpful
Would like to play in the summer
i would love to play during better weather, the course was wet, greens we're in great condition. The course can take the drive out of your hands on more than a few holes. This means using a long iron on the tee and into the green. Overall the course was fun and I look to play again this spring\summer.
Solid Track
Great winter conditions and I can't wait for the spring
Good features
Nice greens, fairways good for this time of year, some holes difficult finding ball with leaves on ground this time of year. Overall a great course.
Westport Golf, 12/1/14
First time played. Very nice course for winter.Looking to play it this spring. Fairways are a bit tight, but forgiving if your not a heavy slicer. Need to get a yardage book and pay attention. My partner and I tee up on the 1st. hole , we didn't look at the book, you are hitting into a valley. We start out and there is a pond, luckily we both were short.
Don't hit driver much, three woods and hybrids.
Slow day behind a walking woman and her riding husband. Still enjoyable and I will be back.
The staff are top notch guys. Thanks
Not a good value for the money
I have played better courses for less money. Ruts in the fairways on quite a few holes and leaf's all over the course it didn't look like they had made an effort to clean the course at all. It had been some months since I last played this course and I think it will be quite a while before I go back.
Looking good
Westport is looking goods. Greens are running true and smooth. Overall course in very good condition.
Rugged Jewel
This revived Lake Norman classic will reward a shotmaker. Hilly and rough around the edges.
For those who can shape their tee shots around the numerous doglegs, scoring opportunities greatly improve.
Seems to be popular with locals. Freindly personnel.
Great Layout- Needs some work
There were a good bit of gorgeous holes that with some care would be a lot of fun to play. Greens started over very hairy and as the sun baked started to roll nicely. Rough was patchy and couldn't catch many clean lies on the fairway.
Cheap though. May go back to just hack it again.
Quick round on really slow greens
My wife and I played 18 on Sunday morning in three hours! That's the good news-the bad news is that the greens were painfully slow and the fairway grass was so long it was like hitting out of the rough. It's an interesting course with some challenging holes. We made some birdies and never had to wait. A good course super could really make this place excellent.
Great value
Challenging course. Stay out of the rough! You'll pay for it. Greens are very slow but in great condition. Staff is usually friendly except for the Italian guy from New York. They should not have this guy represent the golf club. Extremely unfriendly person.
Bang for your buck
Booked a hot now tee time on a Saturday morning for $19. For a course like this, that is a steal!
Not an overly long course, I pulled driver only 3 times. You need to be able to place your ball correctly and manage your game. Greens were a little slow in the morning but that is to be expected, they firmed up later on the round. We were greeted when we arrived by the starter and he made sure everyone stayed on time which really helped out the pace of play. Finished the round right at 4 hours, which for a Saturday morning is rare in my experience.
Overall great experience and I will be returning.
Slow Play due to tournament, don't get in rough.
Was only able to play 14 holes because it was so slow due to a tournament. Guys in front of us were not in the tournament and played from the back tees which was not appropriate for them. We were the 5th team on the 15th hole waiting to play. After 4 hours and that kind of wait, I left. They had no rangers and water in one place (well fountain) on the course.
Not a great layout
Just not a good layout. Many short to medium irons off of tees. A number of blind tee shots with ponds in unusual places. Fairways and rough just ok. Greens were good and true but slow when we played. Back side is much better than front when it comes to optics. Will not play again unless nothing else available. To balance pro shop staff was excellent.
Great Challenge
Course is in very good shape. Slow greens and fairways so don't expect a roll out on that drive and hit the putts a bit more firm.
I played from the back tee box. Every tee shot has a challenge. Stay short of a hazard, hit to a tight corner on a true dog leg, or simply long up hill par 3. Speaking of up-hill. At least 2 out of every 3 approach shots are up-hill adding sometimes 1 or 2 club lengths. There are several holes where you will have to lay short of a hazard or simply hit to the dog leg. So even if you are playing a tee box closer you will face long approach shots.
Very good course to play. You will have to be accurate off the tee and don't expect to hit a lot of short iron approach shots. Excellent challenge.
