Great morning of golf
My wife and I booked a Hot Deal at The Pines for an 8:36am tee off. Everyone we met was extremely friendly and happy to answer any questions we had. The course was in very good condition and very open. This played well into my slice which sometimes shows it ugly head.
We were able to tee off before the regulars so our round only took us 3 hours 45 minutes. Never played up on another group which we had to wait for.
Fairways were lush and most greens were in great shape. Some greens had some sand but the pins were placed in areas of grass. Perhaps they had recently been aerated.
We would definitely play again if we were staying in the area.
Great Day in Elizabeth City
The sky was a gorgeous Carolina blue, the temperature was around 74 and occasionally a light breeze. The fairways were in great shape. I have a habit of playing "winter rules" just about year round, and out of habit almost always roll my ball around looking for a perfect lie. At The Pines, I hardly ever needed to do that. Yes, it's not "by the book", but it was just a casual round with my brother. The greens has a top dressing of sand on them, but it must have been done a few days earlier because the sand was almost gone on some areas of the greens. It didn't seem to affect the putts at all. Some of the best greens around. It is definitely worth the 40-45 minute drive from Virginia Beach.
Challenging holes
This course is longer than most and has lots of water to avoid. It was a great value for the money. My only problem is several of the greens are not in good shape and need a lot of work.
Course conditions
I realize the course is being sold and until extensive work is done to the greens, I wouldn't recommend this course for play.
Worth the Drive
The Pines proved to be worth the drive up from Duck. The staff was very friendly and the course was challenging for me and easy enough for others in my party to enjoy themselves. The fairways were wide and well maintained. The only issue were the greens on several of the holes. A few of them were unputtable but but that didn't stop us from enjoying the day. We could not find anything within 20 miles of Duck that was under $50-60. So the $16 fee was ideal and it only took about 45-50 minutes to get there. We will come back again next year.
it was ok
The staff was not really friendly with me. The course lay out was poor.
Shotmaker's Course
Not particularly long, but there are some tricky holes that will make you think. The greens were way slower than I thought they were and should have been, but maybe they weren't able to cut them because of all the rain proceeding my round… Not sure. Definitely a good value for what I paid though.
Always enjoy playing the Pines . We travel from the Norfolk area 2 to 3 times a year to play . We were unhappy with the speed of the greens . They were very slow . They were in good shape just way to slow .. Other than that fun course to play .
Well kept course that has tight fairways and elevated greens.
Great place to play!
I play at The Pines a lot. Staff is always friendly and willing to chat it up. I always bring my kids who are 5 & 3 with me to play in the mornings to beat the rush. The staff is extremely supportive of young kids getting on the course to learn. Always impressed each time I go. Course is getting back into shape. Greens are beginning to roll more true. Looking forward to getting back out there.
The Pines
Course was in good shape for this time of year. Staff was very nice, we had a great lunch also. I wouldn't recommend starting anywhere near lunch time. They have a bunch of regular players that feel they own the place. They start around noon, so stay clear. It's a shame this was the worst part of this course.
