About
Unlike some Jack Nicklaus golf courses that have earned a reputation for being among the world's most difficult, mid- and high-handicappers stand a fighting chance at the Grand Bear Golf Course. Nicklaus offers wide fairways before the sprawling woods take over on either side, most bunkers aren't horribly steep, and greens generally have room in front to run a shot up. The winding Biloxi River helps build Grand Bear to a dramatic finish. The par-3 14th hole plays through a chute of woods to a green guarded by the river below that runs along diagonally, punishing hooked shots left short. After another par 3 on the 16th that plays with the river to the left, the 17th once again plays over the river on the drive, then parallel to the hole. The 18th hole plays long and uphill back toward the clubhouse.

Golfer Reviews
Over priced & Un-Managed
5some in front of us on Saturday, a holiday Saturday at that. (Who lets a 5some off on a Saturday? Someone who doesn’t know how to manage a course. Never once saw a Marshall to tell them to speed up. 4 some ahead of them with 2 .5 open holes ahead of the 9 slowing up the whole course.
Had to wait in the parking lot for someone to bring you a cart, you are not allowed to drop your clubs off up front.
As hot as it was, you’d think they would bring cold towels around (like other courses, that charge much less) but they did give you a wet paper towel at the turn.
We ended having to leave because it was going to be a 6 hour round and I got stuff to do.
I will never play this course again, it is not worth $125 and the hospitality is not there to justify $125.
Reputation exceeds reality
I couldn’t wait to play the course. Arriving to a fancy clubhouse and great driving range had our hopes high. We paid the higher green fees expecting a championship level course.
The greens were in great condition, but not as challenging as one would expect for a claim of a championship level course. The entire course was basically flat including the greens which was one of the biggest disappointments. The fairways were good in spots and bad in others. It was a good course. $120 good, nah…, I’d say with today’s hyped prices it’s a $75 course. I’d rank it 7th in a 120 mile radius. Even Shadow Ridge in Hattiesburg offers a better course layout and Windance has better fairways and the greens are equally nice. Just mhp.
Greens were fast and good shape. Pace wasn’t bad for the amount of people that were there. One problem with that is, supposed to get range balls and when you have 10 spots to hit with 30 guys out there, it’s hard to warm up.
Slow play
The course is in great condition. The course is not managed well. Round today took almost 6 hrs. The mgt booked a tournament and also took tee times. On hole two there were 3 groups waiting to tee off. The staff both on and off the course were great again whoever booked the tournament and also took tee times need to be evaluated.
Nice Course - Bad Pace of Play
This is a very nice course, with a engaging and challenging layout. Fairways and Greens were in great shape.
Unfortunately, pace of play and other golfers were the main issue. We had a group of 7 "YouTubers" filming and playing drinking games in front of us. There was little to no oversight by the staff for this. We were paired with two inexperienced golfers (also there just to drink and be rowdy) who had no concept of pace of play. Behind us were 4 highly skilled golfers who were yelling at us to hurry up the whole time. am not a golf snob, I appreciate all levels of play and welcome a round with anyone who appreciates the game, and is there to PLAY, not turn it into a rolling bar.
This is probably just a coincidence, but it made for a pretty miserable round. For the price this course charges, they should have better guidelines in place. I did mention this to the staff at the Pro Shop when we finished and was told "Yeah, sorry about that, we sent someone out to check on them"
I would assume this is a private course that had to go public to stay open, but that's just an opinion.
Would I play here again? Probably.
Great Experience
Absolutely fantastic experience. 100% will be back to play again. Beautiful course
Loved it. Will be back
I played here in November of '25 on a trip with two friends. We played it three times and another course twice. This course was somewhat of a challenge for me, but there is nothing tricky. The course is right in front of you. Keep it out of the sand and you'll have a good day.
A five-hole look at Grand Bear
Although I only got to play five holes before a major storm rolled in, you could see why GolfPass ratings are so strong. There's no homes to take away from the natural setting. The holes I played were fun and fair, a noteworthy accomplishment considering I didn't always experience the same on other Gulf Coast courses I played during my four-day visit. The clubhouse was impressive with a nice bar area and pool table. I wouldn't have been able to survive the rain cancellation without it.
Grand Bear
The course was not in the premium shape I am used to seeing. I was stationed at Keesler AFB for several years. But it has been at least 3 years since I have played there. The course is amazing, but looks like they had some winter issues with all the snow and freezing weather this past winter. Do not pass up the opportunity to play this course. The staff is also outstanding.
Glad I found this course
I had found the course on golf now. Course layout was vast and challenging. Staff friendly. Pace of play was great. Couldn’t finish our 18 but got a rain check to complete the back 9. Staff and amenities at facility up there with a private course. Highly recommend.
Simply amazing
Simply amazing course! Awesome layout, great greens.
Great Course in Mississippi
We played the course when it started out a bit chilly at 12:30PM, but once on the course all of us warmed up. The course was in pristine condition and staff quite helpful with directions and comments. Each hole is it's own hole meandering through the forest with no homes or businesses bordering the fairways. The tee boxes, fairways, rough and the greens were immaculate. Putting was a challenge with the speed of the greens, but rolled true with no bumps or spike marks. It was one of the most enjoyable rounds in the Fall. Even though it's drive to the course, it is well worth the trip to enjoy one of the nicest courses played in 2024.
Top 5 Mississippi Course
Great course, great layout, greens were fast and challenging. Managed to find a few bunkers, both fairway and next to green, all were in good condition.
Well spaced tee boxes for me as an older golfer.
Stays on my play list for another year.
Clubhouse food and beverage was great service, as was beverage cart service.
