Oahu is the most populated Hawaiian Island, and the most popular one for tourists visiting the 50th state. Honolulu is a hub of commerce in the middle of the Pacific. Snarling traffic can clog up the highways surrounding the city, just like tourists crowd the famed Waikiki Beach. There’s much to see and do on the island beyond downtown – hiking Diamond Head, surfing the north shore, paying tribute to fallen heroes at Pearl Harbor. That includes playing golf.

Ewa Beach Golf Club is a favorite among Oahu locals, and although it's not easy to get to, it's worth the trip. Opened in 1992, this 6,700-yard Robin Nelson design has a great variety of holes, excellent service and a good pace of play. Plus, this hidden gem is reasonably priced.
Despite sitting in one of the driest sports on Oahu, the Ewa Beach Golf Club is wall-to-wall green like it's located in Ireland instead of Hawaii. The course is always in terrific condition, with impeccable greens, and has been one of Oahu's best-kept secrets. Not anymore.
You don't have to surf to love Turtle Bay Resort. The big waves of Oahu's North Shore are the heart and soul of Turtle Bay, but there are other ways to spend an active vacation here. Jason Scott Deegan offers up the top 10.
The Golf Skate Caddy is a cool, new, single-person motorized golf transport invented in Australia and currently being used on the Arnold Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort in Hawaii. Jason Scott Deegan takes a test spin.
The First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu overcame improbable odds in 2006 to become the only church in the world to own a golf course on site: Ko'olau Golf Club. Built for $82 million, Ko'olau sits on heavenly land roughly 45 minutes from downtown Honolulu. The course was carved from a tropical rain forest designated as a nature conservancy in the shadow of the Ko'olau Mountains.
Many first-time visitors simply don't know where to go on Oahu to find a more tropical paradise away from the pulse of the city. Jason Scott Deegan sheds light on the best Oahu plays.
Honolulu officials are considering a Topgolf concept at the famously popular municipal Ala Wai Golf Course. Will these partnerships become more common at urban courses throughout the country?
Golf and the historical sites and museums of Pearl Harbor are a big reason why Oahu is the most visited Hawaiian island. Why not combine the two?
Oahu, Hawaii's most populated island, has more affordable public golf course options than any other island in Hawaii. Golf on Oahu isn't dominated by resorts, but by daily fees. Some are expensive, but you can usually negotiate tee times for far less online or during less peak times. Veteran golf travel writer Mike Bailey offers up seven of his favorite on Oahu.
The Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki doesn't look or feel like a golf resort. It might be the only golf resort in the world where there's no green grass in sight. Walk out the front door, there's nothing but concrete and the sailboats docked at the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor. The resort's course, the 27-hole Hawaii Prince Golf Club, sits like an outcast 40 minutes away in Ewa Beach. Still, golfers will love this place.

Playing the 27-hole Hawaii Prince Golf Club on Oahu feels like a walk in a windy tropical park. It isn't the bunkers or trees or 10 ponds that defend par. It's the tradewinds. These steady ocean breezes make selecting clubs difficult and certain holes play long and demanding. Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay designed the club in 1992 as an amenity of the Hawaiian Prince Hotel Waikiki. A complimentary shuttle transports guests for the 40-minute ride between the club and hotel.
Ewa Beach Golf Club, roughly a half-hour's drive from Waikiki, was the first course in Hawaii to plant Seashore Paspalum grass, which provides prime playing conditions that stay lush and consistent. Kiawe trees pinch the fairways of the first nine holes of this Robin Nelson design. The back nine opens up, although the water lurks ominously at the end of the round.
Turtle Bay Resort's idyllic location of 840 acres along Oahu's North Shore has been filmed in more than 150 movies and TV shows since opening in 1972. Golfers at Turtle Bay can enjoy playing courses designed by Arnold Palmer and George Fazio, and ongoing renovations through 2013 will give the resort a fresh, vibrant feel for generations to come.
Turtle Bay Resort is the only Oahu resort launching helicopter tours right on property. The Paradise Helicopters tour ranges in price, but it's money well spent for such a cool experience.
Layouts like the Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort help put golf just behind surfing among the top sports on Oahu's North Shore.
Carved from a tropical rain forest in the shadow of majestic mountains, Ko'olau Golf Club on Oahu remains one of the most difficult golf courses in the world. Losing balls in the ravines and thick jungle lining many fairways will frustrate first-timers who think they can slay one of golf's Goliaths. To enjoy the day, come for the scenery -- not a score.
Away from the golf course, no other Hawaiian island can offer the diversity of Oahu. From nightlife to water sports, luaus to sightseeing and more, Jason Deegan offers up some of the best of Oahu when you are not on the golf course in this photo gallery.
