With places like SilverRock Resort, Indian Wells Golf Resort and Desert Willow Golf Resort, the Coachella Valley can easily claim to be the municipal golf capital of the world. All three clubs feature courses ranked among the top 50 "munis" in the U.S. by Golfweek, and you can play one former PGA Tour venue for less than $60. That's amazing, as is muni golf in the Coachella Valley. Jason Deegan has more from southern California.

The phrase "municipal golf" often conjures up images of patchy or bald fairways and greens - not plush, PGA Tour-ready conditions. But your muni probably isn't in the Coachella Valley city of Indian Wells, Calif. At the heart of it all are two municipal courses that fit right in among the area's top resort courses: the Indian Wells Golf Resort's Players and Celebrity courses.

To place tee into turf at Indian Palms C.C. is to dig into some serious golf history. Founded in the late 1940s, the original nine-hole grounds served as the first public golf course in the Coachella Valley. Since course overhauls in 2003 and ownership changes in 2012, the unique status of Indian Palms remains well intact. While many of the desert's august, resort-style courses serve as oft-benign play days in contrast with the area's modern long and strong tracks -- Indian Palms is no pushover. The three nine-hole courses each sport their own distance, nuance and challenge.
The dual-ownership grounds of PGA West and La Quinta Resort & Club offer up a desert experience full of pleasure. Picking up where the old Bob Hope Classic left off, the Patrick Warburton Celebrity Golf for Kids Tournament drew more than 50 celebrities to Palm Desert, Calif. in early March to raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital. The lineup includes celebrities from film, TV and sports. The golf was played at the Classic Club and the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa's Palm Course. The festivities also included a songwriters night, jam session and gala.
The cathedral clubhouse at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, California serves as the symbol of just how classy clubs must be to thrive in the Coachella Valley. Troon Golf runs a first-class operation, and the 7,332-yard Arnold Palmer design provides a first-class test with water coming into play on 12 holes. Course conditions are good enough to still host the pros, as the semi-private club did during the Bob Hope Classic from 2006-08.
The 7,056-yard Firecliff Course at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, Calif. lays claim as one of the best tests of golf in the Coachella Valley. The Firecliff Course features more carries and visual intimidation off the tee, more sand and larger waste areas, harsher green sites and longer par 4s than its sister Mountain View Course. Firecliff's designers essentially supersized all the dramatic elements that make scorecard combustion harder to contain.
With plenty of water, bunkers and gorgeous mountain scenery, the Palms Course at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa is an enjoyable test of golf. One of two golf courses at the resort designed by Ted Robinson, and with four sets of tees and generous fairways, the Palm is enjoyable by most every level, although water does come into play on several approaches.
The Palm Course at JW Marriott Desert Springs in Palm Desert, Calif., was designed by Ted Robinson Sr. in the mid-1980s and touched up by Ted Robinson Jr. in the spring of 2011. Upgrades included new tees, bunkers with crushed marble sand and greens that are now all up to USGA specifications. The Palm has water on 12 holes, so keep plenty of golf balls around.
To some, the Mountain View Course at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, Calif. rules the Coachella Valley. The 6,913-yard course, which opened in 1998 and underwent a million-dollar renovation in 2009, provides plenty of playability with strategic moments thrown in. The scenery of the surrounding Santa Rosa Mountains adds a panoramic backdrop.
The Valley Course at JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort in Palm Desert, Calif., is surrounded by the Santa Rosa Mountains and offers a quiet play. A little more friendly than its sister Palm Course, Valley offers a stunning landscape covered with swaying palms and blue lagoons.
The Players Course at Indian Wells was designed by John Fought and plays a brawny 7,376 yards from the back tees. Its terrain isn't as dramatic as the resort's Celebrity course, but it features beautification in every spot and there is no residential development lining any fairways. Both Indian Wells courses are rated among some of the best public and municipal courses in both California and the country.
Designed by Clive Clark, the Celebrity Course is one of two courses at the Indian Wells Golf Resort near Palm Springs. Flashier than the resort's Players Course, the Celebrity features numerous water features, ornamentals and flashy bunkers. It's also unique in that it only has two par 5s and two par 4s, which still adds up to a par 72 over 7,050 yards.
The Celebrity Course at Indian Wells Golf Resort features a little more topographical variance than the resort's Players Course and also has more tight holes lined with trees. There is a stretch of wide-open holes on the back nine, starting with the 12th hole through the 16th hole. The Celebrity is rated among the best municipal plays in the United States.
Pete Dye's Mountain Course at La Quinta Resort is certainly one of the most picturesque in California's Coachella Valley.
They no longer play the PGA Tour's Humana Challenge (formerly the Bob Hope Classic) at SilverRock Resort in La Quinta, California, but that doesn't mean SilverRock has become irrelevant. In fact, the Arnold Palmer design, which opened in 2005, remains one of the premier playgrounds in the Coachella Valley. The fairways skirt deep bunkering, the desert landscape, and most impressively, the Santa Rosa Mountains. It takes extra effort to play golf and not to get caught up in their grandeur.
With a backdrop provided by the San Jacinto Mountains and clear blue skies framing every hole, Escena Golf Club in Palm Springs, California is as scenic as it is challenging.
The Greg Norman Course opened in 1999 and has certainly taken its place among the best courses at PGA West.
Following in the tradition of legendary courses where the game of golf was invented, Desert Dunes Golf Club just north of Palm Springs is the best example of a links-style course in the SoCal desert. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course was first opened in 1989 and has received a variety of awards and recognition over the years.
