Nags Head Golf Club has a traditional Scottish-links layout that is right at home on the windswept terrain of the Outer Banks. Situated along the Roanoke Sound, the rugged coastline and rolling sand dunes perfectly mimic a classic links landscape. The golf course is a shot maker's layout that will test your skills but it is still player friendly enough to appeal to all skill levels. You'll need a sharp short game for sure, but you won't need much length on this rather short layout. Some form of water appears on nearly every hole, including some holes that play right along the Sound, and the undulating greens can be tough. It's a challenging-but-fun round that is worth playing for the scenery alone. Unsurprisingly, Nags Head Golf Club is one of the most popular golf courses in the OBX.

Outer Banks Golf

Very nice track...a bit tight and if the wind is blowing can make you crazy. However, it is a must play when visiting the Outer Banks!

Disappointed

Read some reviews on this course and thought I would give it a try. Disappointed in the practice range. Didn't expect to be hitting plastic golf balls that all had dents in them. Had to walk a lot due to cart path only on several holes. Course layout was good. Scenery was excellent. Needs better outline of each hole at tee boxes. Overall 5/10. Won't be back anytime soon to this course.

A nice place to play

The staff is excellent all around. The course can play easy or hard depending on how hard the wind is blowing. Great views of the sound. The greens were very soft which is good for accepting shots, but makes them bumpy for putting sometimes. Hit to the wide spots on the fairways since missed fairways can be lost balls many times.

Nags Head Golf

Suggest not looking at yardage when deciding which tees to play, look at slope rating instead. We played Black tees since only 6,100 yes and was big mistake. Small landing areas trying to use driver and wind off of bay makes many holes challenging. Course in good condition and pace of play was also good. Had fun but more fun if we played more forward tees.

Challenging

This tight course will test your golf skills! Not only are the fairways narrow but with many water and marsh hazards jetting out into the fairways it calls for specific straight iron distance shots! Playing this course for the first time......my golf buddy and I found it very challenging ! The greens and fairways were in good shape for late summer play and the views of the bay were beautiful! The starter was engaging!

Tight, but Cool

For reference, I am a 2 handicap and a golf course snob, so my review is very accurate. I'm not a hacker that thinks if the course has grass, it's "nice".

As for Nags Head, the tee boxes and fairways were good, but could have been mowed a little tighter for me, just a little bit long. The greens were decent actually. They have bent greens, so the hot weather keeps them from mowing them too short, so they were a touch slow. As for the layout, there were some cool holes. A few holes (4-5) bordered the sound, so that made for some nice views. The golf course is tight, if you miss the fairway, you're probably going to lose your ball. Don't hit driver except on 18.

Lastly, the pace of play was pretty bad. We teed off at 3pm as a 3some and had three 2somes in front of us. They should have paired them together to keep up pace of play. We didn't see the ranger until the 18th hole and he asked us what was taking so long! Hahaha

Overall, it's a cool track with some fun holes, it's in decent shape (but not great). Good place to go try out when you're on vacation.

Great views but....

The views from the course are amazing! Many of the holes run along Pimlico Sound providing a stunning backdrop. Tee to green, the course was in relatively good shape, although be forwarned, it is TIGHT. Accuracy over distance is key. Now for the negative; the greens were awful. They had been recently air rated, which seemed odd for June, and hadn't been cut in days. Further, it seemed like most were having some issues with a fungus or irregular growth. I think this would be an amazing course if the green conditions improved, but I am glad we didn't pay full price.

Awesome views

A few points to make about the course:

1. The views are spectacular. There are 5 or 6 holes on the bay that are beautiful and offer great picture opportunities.

2. The rates before noon are ridiculous. This course is not worth $110. We got an awesome deal on golfnow for $25 and it is absolutely worth that price.

3. For the "quality" that this course is supposed to present, I was not pleased with the greens. Back home in Louisville, these greens would be about as bad as it gets. I understand that it gets hot here and it is hard to keep the greens fast and smooth but for the norma price tag I was not happy. The rest of the course was in very good shape.

4. The course is very short and tight. It is definitely target golf. If you can hit something about 200 yds and straight off the tee, that should be your club of choice most of the day. Very tough to figure yardage a to hazards. Strongly recommend buying a yardage book.

5. The clubhouse and snack bar both closed at 5 pm. Again, for the price tag on this course,I would expect a little more hospitality and customer service. So if you get a twilight tee time, bring your own drinks.

Not overly impressed. Lots of target golf with irons out of tee boxes. Rather short course. Liked Kilmsric and Carolina Club better.

Knowing the course

When I booked with Golfnow they explained the course had airrrated the greens, they were spot on.Also I got to the Outer banks early and called the course to see if my group could tee off any earlier,we teed off about an hour before our booked tee time. The only issue was SLOW play, didn't see Marshall the whole 18 holes
