Nags Head Golf Links
About
Nags Head Golf Club has a traditional Scottish-links layout that is right at home on the windswept terrain of the Outer Banks. Situated along the Roanoke Sound, the rugged coastline and rolling sand dunes perfectly mimic a classic links landscape. The golf course is a shot maker's layout that will test your skills but it is still player friendly enough to appeal to all skill levels. You'll need a sharp short game for sure, but you won't need much length on this rather short layout. Some form of water appears on nearly every hole, including some holes that play right along the Sound, and the undulating greens can be tough. It's a challenging-but-fun round that is worth playing for the scenery alone. Unsurprisingly, Nags Head Golf Club is one of the most popular golf courses in the OBX.

Several holes run along the sound, and make Nags Head a very picturesque course. Photo submitted by JohnL1848734 on 09/08/2022

Beautiful Course but not Scottish links-style
Incredible course conditions, friendly staff, and beautiful ocean views. Fairly short holes but extremely unforgiving. I've never lost so many balls. The woods/brush is super dense. Don't even bother looking for your ball if it's not immediately visible. Maybe my I have the wrong picture in mind for Scottish links, but in my opinion the description is way off base. The course is surrounded by homes and some holes are somewhat noisy due to passing traffic. At no point did I feel like I was truly away from the hectic world I like to escape when I golf. I like courses that take you farther away from society where I can only hear the sounds of nature. This was far from that experience. Overall, a pleasure to play at the discounted price of $69, but I would not pay more.
Nag's Head
Course has a number of blind tee shots. A feature that doesn't make sense for guests.
Sound side holes are interesting but the holes winding through the development much less so.
There is not much margin for error as shots just off the fairway are readily lost. Off fairway grooming could be much better.
I rate value for the money as low.
Choose Tee Box wisely
Not a long course, but if you play the tips you are going to have some long carries on tee shots. Unless you are very accurate with 220 yd tee shots at sea level , Play the whites !!! I wish someone had told me this , I would have enjoyed the round much more.
Nice Scenic
Myself and two friends recently played Nags Head while on vacation at the OBX. The course itself was very fun and has beautiful views of the bay. The fairways were in excellent shape, the greens were good but could have been a little more consistent speed wise hole to hole. The pace of play was very good, we were almost never waiting on a tee box. However, the staff we dealt with while there were extremely rude! The two younger gentleman in the pro shop acted very uninterested in helping us check in and seemed to be rather bothered by us even being in there. Then once we got to the first tee and were met by the starter, we experienced further ignorance. He continued to tell us how late we were (only 2 mins, which was mostly due to the fact that the two guys in the pro shop took their time checking us in). Then he proceeded to tell us how to play the course.. "If I were you guys, I wouldn't hit this on that hole" etc. There's a difference between giving helpful tips and giving orders, there were definitely given in a boisterous and ignorant manner. My friend had gone into the clubhouse to drop off the cart key and was greeted by the same started who said "well, it's about time" in an very annoyed manner. I usually don't write negative reviews unless they're really warranted, but in this case it definitely was! It's a shame such a nice course is run by people like that.. I won't be playing there again during any future visits to the Outer Banks.
Short, but plays longer
This is a beautiful golf course, several holes along the sound are spectacular. The wind was up, and made for very tricky conditions. Greens are slower than I would have thought, but they have had a lot of rain lately. Put away the driver, you won't need it, you want to keep it in the fairway. Fun course to play, but a little pricey for me, played super twilight rates, made it more cost effective, but also the windiest time of day, plus a 10 minute downpour in the wind, which is also a common occurrence at that time of day. Pace of play was brisk, sub four hour.
Great links course
First hole very easy, from there course is Fairly challenging. Holes on bay side can be very windy.
Played with friend and we enjoyed yourselves.
Great scenic views. Challenging course.
Great course! Not very long but accuracy is critical. Would play again. Rates vary greatly.
WINDY short and tight
Cool course ....but tight fairways and high winds also make for a very challenging round. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful ....starter even got me out earlier which was great !! Quite a few blind shots so I'm looking forward to another round.
Blame the other guy.
Went to check in and was told that four holes were closed due to hurricane damage. Did not appear to me there was any just debris in low spots along the sound side of the course. Suggested some compensation, maybe a nine hole rain check, only offered plastic and beat up range balls. Also was told golfnow would be the ones to talk too. That they were informed by the course of the issues and did not respond.
Great views
4 holes closed due to impact of storm.... Buy the course book
leave your driver in the bag
Course is in great shape, greens were medium speed with not a lot of break. This was my first time on the course and found every hazard. If I play here again I'll leave the driver in the bag.I 'm an average length hitter and most of the par5s are reachable in 2 even with a 3wood off the tee. This course is short and most par 4s are reachable with a short iron second shot. The wind and brutal rough make this course a good challenge even for low handicap golfers.
enjoyable course, wind is critical, not quite links golf
This was a very enjoyable golf course. The day we played it rained in the morning and continued lightly for our first two holes. After that it was a calm, sunny and humid day. So we did not experience the wind that likely makes this golf course so challenging.
The course was in great shape. The holes have a lot of variety. There are 2 drivable par 4s, some long par 4s, and several strategic par 4s. Par 3s were both long and short.
The greens were extremely slow, but then again it had rained earlier in the day.
Several of the holes play along the sound, but most meander through a nice housing development.
I realize "links" means different things to different players. I expected a more open, treeless course next to the water with opportunities for running the ball up to the green. As I said above, many of the holes are bordered by houses, occasionally on both sides. There is a lot of target golf and some forced carries. Not quite what I expected.
Even the mild wind affected several of our shots, so this will be your main challenge
Golf along the sound
Nags Head Golf Links is a beautiful course along the sound. Challenging, but a ton of fun. Tom (the starter) was awesome! He gave me the low down on the course and checked in on me throughout my round, making sure I was enjoying myself! Thanks Tom! The course is in great condition. Greens played real nice aside from ball marks people don't fix (don't be that guy). Pace was slow because of the group a head of me, bunch of dusters that couldn't swing a club to save their own life. The course isn't very long...accuracy and ability to hit tricky wind shots will be success at NHGL. Target golf as I like to call it. Amazing outing, great course, staff is super nice and professional, and great photo ops along the sound. This will not be the last time I golf at NHGL! I will be back! Nags Head Golf Links is a must!
Awesome OBX Golf
Great Links style couse know your distances and judge the wind and you can score well! Even thought it was 90 degrees the wind off the sound made it feel cooler.
Must play course
This course is one of the best in the Outer Banks area. Every time I've come here, the course has been in great shape and staff very friendly. The only thing I would mention is the pace of play from other golfers during the evenings. A lot of novice golfers this particular day, and had to wait several holes even after being allowed to play through many groups. Outside of the delay on my recent visit, course is excellent. Short and narrow, but challenging if you dare take out the big stick. "Love this course!"
Nags Head misery
I have played more than a thousand courses , and this course was one of the worst. Extremely tight driving holes, no directions where to hit, no lateral hazards. Everything is a lost ball. Despite the conditions being perfect , greens and fairways in great shape, a miserable course, especially when the wind blows as it always does. Not much fun. Leave your woods in the car, and tee off with a 6 iron. Terrible
Gem between the waters
Not overly long calls for almost every club in your bag not challenging enough for plus handicaps probably but for average golfers it's a treat . Fast play great staff and friendly locals make it a must play . Enjoyed it so much going to schedule another trip down to play again later this year !
Enjoyable golf
Enjoyable course, good condition, most accomadating staff. Some blind shots. A second round should in a better score. Shot placement critical.
A good choice on the north OBX
only played 9 holes. the greens were recently aerated, no upfront notice given. Plays short, but neeed some accuracy. would play again.
