You have to play this course
This course is a jewel hidden in western North Carolina. The layout of the holes is excellent! There are many holes with elevated tees or greens, or both, giving great views and making it a challenge to achieve par. I had to come back and play it again two days later. I can't begin to tell you how much fun it was to try to solve the various doglegs, elevation changes, and strategic placement of the bunkers. A great time!
incredible layout and course with terrible greens
We were very excited to play Cleghorn. We had high hopes after realizing that the Equestrian center were the owners. THE GREENS WERE TERRIBLE!!! How is this possible with all of the money 5 minutes away. I have other single digit golfers that I would love to take here but do not dare to. If the greens were even good I would suggest this course. This was like putting on a plinko board on the price is right. It was a guessing game. How can you even expect out of towners to take the course seriously when the greens are like this. I should have known when I went to the practice green. It was identical to all 18. Terrible! I was so disappointed because everything else was very nice.
Cleghorn Coming Along!
I have played this course every chance I get when I visit the area. Over the past 2 years the course has been in "ok" shape.
This time, the course was in excellent shape. Green, lush, fairways and greens. Tricky breaks when putting but that was to be expected.
If you get a chance to play it while you are in the area. Go for it!
Great Course, Unfortunate Timing
I drove an hour and a half to meet my dad for a pre-Father's Day round. I heard great reviews from friends and on Golf Advisor so I booked a tee time online for their normal rate. The staff was very friendly and accommodating which was great. Unfortunately, the greens had just been aerated and were the worst I've ever played. They weren't normal aerated conditions because they added an ungodly amount of sand to the greens. On most holes, there were at least 1/4 inch of sand around the hole. Making it impossible to score.
The rest of the course was top notch. The fairways and tee boxes were impeccable; the layout was challenging and interesting. I would definitely play this course again but do yourself a favor and WAIT 2 weeks to go play until the greens are playable.
Great course!
Cleghorn is an excellent course in a beautiful setting. The greens are true...champion bent grass. The challenge is the undulations on virtually every green.
Will definitely play this course again.
Best Golf in WNC
We haven't played this course in a while because we usually play at Meadowbrook when in the area. I had forgot how beautiful and well-maintained course this is. The pace was great. The course was immaculate. The landscaping is beautiful. The greens were perfect. The 18th hole is a grand challenge.
Greens were great
Greens were great but tee boxes pretty rough. Still too early in the year for good grass in fairways.
tough layout
Bring all your clubs. you will use each of them. As info, I would probably have rated the course much higher if our 4some had played on a different day. We played during late March (when the bermuda fairways were still dormant). In addition, the area must have had a tremendous rain the night before we played resulting in muddy fairway lies and unplayable traps. As a result, we had to remain on the cart paths(Cleghorn is a really tough course to walk). I recommend playing Cleghorn, especially for those golfers looking for a challenge. However, I suggest you wait until the bermuda has time to mature. I believe their fairways are common bermuda and therefore it may take a little longer than normal to mature.
Fun hill layout
Hills on every hole, have to play the fairway slopes to keep the ball in play. Greens were large, fairly fast and also had undulations and slopes. Its off season so only the greens were in good shape. Will play again
Be smart!
You really need to think each shot through before swinging. On some holes I landed in the middle of the fairway and ended up in the woods, others I missed the fairway only to end up rolling right back to the middle. You'll need distance and trajectory control off the tee. Length is only a good thing if you can control it. Overall conditions were great for Feb. Every bunker I saw was neatly raked. Looking forward to the next trip!
Mountain course
This is a challenging but very playable course for players of all abilities. It being a mountain course there are no flat places... and that includes the greens. A good time was had by all in our foursome and we would be open for another go at it.
great course but...
The course itself is a great track. I love the course but on this particular day we left with a really bad taste in our mouth almost to the point of not being sure if we will return or not. mostly centered around the pace of play and specifically one group which is why I'm reluctant to be really negative about the course but it would be nice to see a Ranger at least drive around the course once or twice throughout the day just to check on things but you don't see this at many courses at all anymore I realize that. we caught three women on about hole number seven with nobody in front of them anywhere in sight and they never once offered to let us go through and I'm talking about it being so slow we hit our approach shots into the greens after they had pulled away, we finished that hole, pulled to the next tee box, teed our balls up and they had still not teed off on that hole. I do regret that we did not call into the clubhouse but I've never liked doing that. and they clearly knew and saw we were behind them waiting as they turned around and looked at us a couple of times from their Teebox. and I can't tell you how they played as far as whether they were any good or not if they were slow because of bad play but I can tell you they were still taking time to fish balls out of the creeks and ponds and things like that knowing we were waiting behind them with nobody in front of them. as I said I love the course but we drove almost 2 hours to play this course and it was just a really frustrating day. I got the impression they were members or regulars there but I can't say that for sure but again simply having someone just ride the course a couple of times would have been nice where we could've said hey can you speed them up or have them let us go through aside from that it's a great course but you do have to hit it well off the tee if you drive it well on the course you can play well and score well but if you're a little erratic with the driver you can post some high numbers
One of my favorites
I go out of my way to play this course. The layout is great. Nice rolling hills with beautiful views all around. Somewhat challenging but worth the occasional double bogey.
Will return
Incredibly friendly staff and nice greens in tremendous shape for the first week of February
Nice Course
This is a great course for golfers. My crew really enjoyed the challenges. We will play this course every chance we get.
Father/Son outting
My son and I love to play this course but it has been a while since we were last here. Course has improved greatly since last visit. Greens were true and fast with plenty of break. Can't wait until spring when it is all green again. Highly recommend this course

They just punched them not even a month ago you do realize this correct? Every course does this.
