Ballyowen Golf Club

About
Ballyowen Golf Club is an homage to the great Scottish links courses, the place where golf originated. The course sprawls across 250 acres of rolling farmland that overlooks the Walkill River. The layout tumbles through valleys and hills, staying as true as possible to the natural contours of the land. Much like a traditional links golf course, the virtually treeless landscape is accented with craggy knolls. The challenging layout features lush green fairways that contrast beautifully with the pristine white sand bunkers and golden patches of rough that border the greensides. There are also water hazards that come into play on five holes. Ballyowen has earned the title of New Jersey's top public course and Golfweek has even ranked it as one of the top 50 courses in the country.

Top New Jersey Course Lives Up to Its Reputation
The course is beautiful and in great condition. The staff is very welcoming and helpful. The only slightly negative aspect was the driving range - no easy turnaround so every time someone had to leave for the first tee, they had to backup a small cart path (of course with the backup beeping alert from the cart annoying everyone warming up). Also, they did not have anyone attending the range and many of the "pyramids' of balls were empty.
The course itself is challenging but fun. The Par value for each hole was very fair for women (which is not always the case with courses). You do need to stay on the fairway because hitting into the fescue grass will most likely result in a lost ball. The greens were fast (which is the reputation of the course) but not "unfair" because the breaks were easy to read and the hole placements were in reasonable spots on the greens the day we played (hole location #1 for that day).
If you have a chance to play BallyOwen, go for it.
Fantastic course
Must play excellently maintained links design large greens fast speed
Exceptional layout and conditions
Heard a lot about this course and was looking forward to playing it for some time. Let me say, the course did not disappoint. Absolutely gorgeous and in great condition. Will definitely be back. Only annoyance was the lack of cordiality from the started. Not exactly what you wanna confronted with before your round.
Too expected there!
I was expecting too much there.
I do not know why they have a good review.
I am playing 3~4 times a week at many place.
I sometime play at Cristal springs and black bear .
They were good value for the fee.
But if I have to pay more than them to this course.
I do not play this course anymore.
If the summer time , they do not have any shade in the course .
No 1 golf course in nj
I agree no 1 5stars rank in New Jersey state
Gorgeous layout fantastic fairway
Never seen before
Amazing kindly service from all staffs
Challenge every shot fast green
Great Course, Terrible Value
Stick to golf. If you limit your field of vision strictly to the golf course - and don't look at the $185 price tag (with the rumor of going over $200 during peak - we scheduled pre-season at $90), and don't look at the $12 White Claws, and $14 Hot Dogs, and the practice range that is "wedges only"... and if you do all that, step on the first tee - it's a great course that doesn't guard the states' crown jewel behind a financial firewall for others to enjoy.
Excellent course. Loved it.
I would absolutely go back there.
Beautiful course and great condition! Staffs very friendly!
Awesome golf course - highly recommended
After meeting the staff, you feel like in Scotland.
Nice links style course layout, somewhat challenging with water hazards on multiple holes.
Definitely planning to play more often here.
Great Layout
Great Layout and good assortment of tees. Big greens that roll true. Would play again. Only drawback is food and drink are very pricey.
Amazing Course-Terrible Pace of Play
Course is amazing, somewhat challenging, and would definitely return. Two negatives-gas powered golf carts were a bit scary on the hilly terrain (and is not in line with Crystal Springs "green" initiatives.)
and the pace of play was hideous. My group consisted of myself and my husband...and the round took five hours. There were two extremely slow groups ahead of us and the Ranger basically told us "there was nothing he could do..." Since the Ranger indicated that the same two groups were problematic the day before at one of the sister courses, I think the issue should have been addressed.
