Approach shot on one of the holes.. shows the average putting green condition Photo submitted by dmhj4evr on 09/30/2013
Good but needs work
Me and my buddy went out, good course which gets you to have better course management. Green in my opinion we’re some of the worst I’ve played recently. They played SUPER SUPER slow. Other than that, fairways were great, and tees were good.
Would play again if just wanted to play a cheaper round.
Mow the greens!
Love this place! Usually play 10 or so times a year, but greens haven’t been mowed in what seems like 2 months. Impossible to putt on, no break, ball hops around like a jumping bean, extremely frustrating. There is no difference in the green, first cut or fringe. All one length.
Looking Good
Course is currently in great shape.
What to expect:
$30 with cart; tough to beat the price.
go low on the front, manage the back 9
slow greens
pace of play can be slow at times, there are singles that play, with no starters can't always play at the pace you would like.
easy to get t time (use their website for cheaper prices than golf now "hot deals"
Horrible
Course is in worst shape I’ve seen in all of the courses around Charlotte. Tee boxes have been moved to areas where they shouldn’t be. Cart paths are dangerous and hazardous. Not sure what they are doing there but it’s so bad they should close it down
We are sorry to hear that we did not meet expectations. Creating a great environment is something we strive for and we will strongly take this into consideration. More improvements to the course are coming and the quality of Harry L. Jones is very important to us.
Not Great
Course was in poor condition. Greens were like fairways, and course navigation was challenging. Both carts in our group would were in very poor shape and we were concerned we would be stranded, the transmissions on both would rev to high RPMs going up hills and the cart I had (#22) would hesitate to move for about 10 seconds after applying the gas. This was caused an issue keeping up with the proper pace of play. There was one employee working the course. I won't be back.
Thank you for your review and we are very sorry that your experience was not ideal. We will continue to make improvements to the course conditions, as well as looking into new golf carts to add to the fleet while others are being repaired.
Excellent Course and good maintenance
Greens are in perfect conditions, but little slow. Maybe because of the heavy rain of last days. Fairways in perfect condition.
Nice pace, I like this course.
Good Course when the conditions are better
The course is a good course, however the greens could use a great deal of attention. They were not in good shape at all. The cart paths are sorely in need of repair.
Spend the Extra $10
From start to finish you will regret not spending the extra $10 bucks to play on one of Charlottes nicer courses to offer. From check in with the not so friendly and welcoming staff member, to the course itself which is full of hazards (not bunkers and water), to the mediocre food, and to top it off with the feeling of being ripped off at the end I would 100% not recommend anyone to waste their money.
Hey! We're sorry about the poor experience at are our golf course. We are always looking to improve the course and have some exciting plans that we would love to share with you. If you could shoot us an email at dratcliffe@ratcliffegolfservices.com with your contact information, we'd be happy to discuss our future plans and your time at the course.
Worst greens
I understand it’s winter but these greens are absolute trash it’s like they forgot they exist.
That said, the layout is fun 6,100 yards from whites with some short par 5’s make it fun. One par three is 50 yards up and can be fun to play once. But those greens.....
18 hole bargain but challenging
This is a city public course that will challenge you and dare you at the same time. Greens are not true but some TLC and they will be better by spring and summer. This is one of my favorite play/practice courses in Charlotte. For the money....its not bad for a fun round of golf.
Getting worse
I played this course a few years ago and it was so-so. Moved back to town recently and played early summer. It’s gotten way worse. Decided to give it another try recently. Dear God this place is bad. The range tee boxes were under water. It was cart path only but my (outdated ragged out has powered) cart almost drowned on the first hole the path was so under water. Speaking of the cart paths, this should be an off road testing ground. The fairways and roughs have zero transition. At least you feel like you are hitting fairways in every drive I guess. The greens... just take a look.
So. Many. Ants!
It’s been awhile since I’ve played this course and thought it would be good to check it out. I have never seen a course with so many ant hills! I stepped on a half dozen or so and had quite a few bites. Won’t play here again until they fix this problem.
Don't Waste Your Money on the Worst Golf Course I've Played in Charlotte
Where do I begin? I'll just make a list to make this easier to read.
1. The Ant Hills are taking over!!! On the tee boxes, fairways, and near the greens! My playing partner even stepped in one of the like 3 at the practice green. They need to spray asap! As a matter of fact, they may need to use a helicopter and release a bug spray over the whole course!
2. Alot of the greens appear to be diseased or just down right pitiful! It feels like your putting on 25 ounce carpet that was bought during a liquidation sale! No consistency with the greens. They will be better off laying hardwood floors down and drilling a hole in the middle of it for putting! The sad thing is I called before booking to ask about course conditions specifically the greens and the guy said the course is in great shape!
3. Fairways need attention on alot of the holes!
4. The rough is a perfect place for cows to graze and eat! If you hit your ball in the rough just do yourself a favor and hit another ball because you will save yourself and those you're playing with alot of time and energy. Its like going on a scavenger hunt!
5. Half rakes in the sand trap! Its supposed to look the letter "T" but this one looked like the letter "L".
6. Cart path needs to be re-paved or the carts need better suspension. Pot holes seem to be a common thing. The fairways need to be leveled or they need to give out back braces to their players from all the bumps and slight drops in the ground!
7. The guy behind the front counter could be more pleasant and much nicer.
8. Lastly, this course shouldn't be named in honor of someone that did good in the community. It's a misrepresentation of him and for what he stood for. Its really a disrespectful slap in the face of his legacy and his family. Instead of Harry L. Jones they should call it "Scary P. Bones"! The "P" would stay for pathetic!
Enjoyed it greatly!
It was our first time playing the course and we didn't really know what to expect based on other reviews. We had a blast. The greens were a little slow but that was fine given many of the pin placements. The layout was thoroughly enjoyable, especially from the blue tees. Thank goodness we hooked up with a regular player of the course who showed us some of the aiming points as there were several blind fairways. Staff in the clubhouse was very friendly. The clubhouse had a nice selection of craft beers on sale! And the hot dogs were tasty! We will be back. I live Muni golf!
Fun course
Staff very friendly. Course dry. Fun track to play.
Greens
Course had a challenging layout and some good holes but greens were almost lost. They are trying to recover them so maybe in a couple of months they will be ready.
Great value
Couldn't be happier. Love this place, great value. Highly recommend. It's a public course with a few dry spots, but great location. Great staff! This is a regular place for me.
Pace of play
If you want a 4 hour and 45 minute round, this was the day and place to do it!!! To be fair, we’ve played this course 5 times over the last 12 months and this was the slowest round by far! It appeared that walk-up customers were given priority regardless of reservation times.
Thanks for trying out Harry L. Jones Golf Course! We are glad to hear you had a good time. Pace-of-play is something that we are constantly monitoring as we want to make sure everyone is having the best experience possible.
