Approach shot on one of the holes.. shows the average putting green condition Photo submitted by dmhj4evr on 09/30/2013
Several challenging holes
Good public course. Challenging holes where some are blind shots which was great fun. The first 9 holes had great greens and back 9 some were under repair.
Poor condition
The course wasn’t in good condition, but that made for less play and a very quick pace. If you are just interested in getting in some practice or get outside, the deal time is very reasonable . My husband and I played in three hours and had an automatic 2 putt on the greens do to the conditions.
Greens need help
The course has lots of potential. The fairways are in pretty good shape. It looks like lots of work is being done to clean up the vegetation and it will enhance the course once it is done. The greens are terrible, no other way to say it. I am hoping that they are fixing the course up and the greens will be done next. If they are not replacing them then I do not know why they do not maintain them. Hope they get fixed so I can play there again.
Never again
I've probably played this course more than any other in the CLT area. I'll echo what another reviewer said though saying the condition of the course has really gone downhill. It's always been a bumpy ride, fine, but that's gotten worse. Fairways vs. rough, can't really tell, but I can live with that to some degree at the price. The worst part are now the greens - and they used to be tolerable. But most of the greens are half dirt. The ones that have grass are pretty meh. This course is very conveniently located and not expensive, which is what had kept me coming back. The last 3 or so times I've gone I finished by saying it was the last time, but this time I really think that's for real. Because it's not so inexpensive to be worth it - I'd rather drive 45 minutes to a course as cheap or cheaper in twice as good of a condition. I've played here about once a year the last three years and I guess the long layoff between playing here makes me forget just enough how terrible it is to give it another shot. Not again. The greens and overall condition were definitely better back in 2013/2014 range when I played here for the first time. One of the other frustrations, but tolerable when the greens were passable and a round was cheap enough, is the fact that it takes real effort to find a truly flat area on tee boxes to set up. That's not supposed to be a challenge in golf -- side hill lies because you hit it somewhere that isn't ideal? Yeah. Finding a flat spot, ideally with grass, on a tee box? No. Charles Sifford course just up the road (but just 9 holes) is so much nicer - and both are county run courses, so I'm not sure why such a disparity -- HLJ is on a landfill and don't think Sifford is, or at least as far as I know, so maybe that's a factor -- but that doesn't explain the huge decline the last 5+ years. It's too bad because the layout and features would be solid if there was grass where there should be grass and a little maintenance done around some of the water and landscape in general. Do yourself a favor and spend an extra $15-20 bucks and plays some where much much nicer.
Not worth the money
This should be a $25 round of golf at the best case we used to play here years ago and it has gone seriously down hill the greens well if you want to call them greens are absolutely terrible more dirt than grass and the grass that’s ion them is like shag carpet. Golf carts have to be 20 years old as well . Just not worth anymore than a weekend rate of $20 to $25
What happened!
Greens were horrible. Not sure what happened but the place was in good shape. Unless you can get rants under $30 find somewhere else. Should be embarrassed to charge $40 for the condition of the course right now!
Still not starter or any pairing of singles, can play course quickly
Great layout, but in poor shape
I was a bit stunned by how poor of condition the course is in right now. The greens were very shaggy and in some cases almost non-existent -- just brown hardpan with spots of fuzzy grass. It was really strange.
I hope this is temporary, because this is an awesome layout.
Horrible greens
The greens were almost where you could not putt. Front nine was better than the back but there was so much poa Anna it was ridiculous
Played day after heavy rain so greens were a little soft. overall good experience. some fairways wide open, others a little bit more challenging.
Good but needs work
Me and my buddy went out, good course which gets you to have better course management. Green in my opinion we’re some of the worst I’ve played recently. They played SUPER SUPER slow. Other than that, fairways were great, and tees were good.
Would play again if just wanted to play a cheaper round.
Mow the greens!
Love this place! Usually play 10 or so times a year, but greens haven’t been mowed in what seems like 2 months. Impossible to putt on, no break, ball hops around like a jumping bean, extremely frustrating. There is no difference in the green, first cut or fringe. All one length.
Looking Good
Course is currently in great shape.
What to expect:
$30 with cart; tough to beat the price.
go low on the front, manage the back 9
slow greens
pace of play can be slow at times, there are singles that play, with no starters can't always play at the pace you would like.
easy to get t time (use their website for cheaper prices than golf now "hot deals"
Horrible
Course is in worst shape I’ve seen in all of the courses around Charlotte. Tee boxes have been moved to areas where they shouldn’t be. Cart paths are dangerous and hazardous. Not sure what they are doing there but it’s so bad they should close it down
We are sorry to hear that we did not meet expectations. Creating a great environment is something we strive for and we will strongly take this into consideration. More improvements to the course are coming and the quality of Harry L. Jones is very important to us.
Not Great
Course was in poor condition. Greens were like fairways, and course navigation was challenging. Both carts in our group would were in very poor shape and we were concerned we would be stranded, the transmissions on both would rev to high RPMs going up hills and the cart I had (#22) would hesitate to move for about 10 seconds after applying the gas. This was caused an issue keeping up with the proper pace of play. There was one employee working the course. I won't be back.
Thank you for your review and we are very sorry that your experience was not ideal. We will continue to make improvements to the course conditions, as well as looking into new golf carts to add to the fleet while others are being repaired.
Excellent Course and good maintenance
Greens are in perfect conditions, but little slow. Maybe because of the heavy rain of last days. Fairways in perfect condition.
Nice pace, I like this course.
Good Course when the conditions are better
The course is a good course, however the greens could use a great deal of attention. They were not in good shape at all. The cart paths are sorely in need of repair.
Thanks for trying out Harry L. Jones Golf Course! We are glad to hear you had a good time. Pace-of-play is something that we are constantly monitoring as we want to make sure everyone is having the best experience possible.
