Approach shot on one of the holes.. shows the average putting green condition Photo submitted by dmhj4evr on 09/30/2013
So. Many. Ants!
It’s been awhile since I’ve played this course and thought it would be good to check it out. I have never seen a course with so many ant hills! I stepped on a half dozen or so and had quite a few bites. Won’t play here again until they fix this problem.
Don't Waste Your Money on the Worst Golf Course I've Played in Charlotte
Where do I begin? I'll just make a list to make this easier to read.
1. The Ant Hills are taking over!!! On the tee boxes, fairways, and near the greens! My playing partner even stepped in one of the like 3 at the practice green. They need to spray asap! As a matter of fact, they may need to use a helicopter and release a bug spray over the whole course!
2. Alot of the greens appear to be diseased or just down right pitiful! It feels like your putting on 25 ounce carpet that was bought during a liquidation sale! No consistency with the greens. They will be better off laying hardwood floors down and drilling a hole in the middle of it for putting! The sad thing is I called before booking to ask about course conditions specifically the greens and the guy said the course is in great shape!
3. Fairways need attention on alot of the holes!
4. The rough is a perfect place for cows to graze and eat! If you hit your ball in the rough just do yourself a favor and hit another ball because you will save yourself and those you're playing with alot of time and energy. Its like going on a scavenger hunt!
5. Half rakes in the sand trap! Its supposed to look the letter "T" but this one looked like the letter "L".
6. Cart path needs to be re-paved or the carts need better suspension. Pot holes seem to be a common thing. The fairways need to be leveled or they need to give out back braces to their players from all the bumps and slight drops in the ground!
7. The guy behind the front counter could be more pleasant and much nicer.
8. Lastly, this course shouldn't be named in honor of someone that did good in the community. It's a misrepresentation of him and for what he stood for. Its really a disrespectful slap in the face of his legacy and his family. Instead of Harry L. Jones they should call it "Scary P. Bones"! The "P" would stay for pathetic!
Enjoyed it greatly!
It was our first time playing the course and we didn't really know what to expect based on other reviews. We had a blast. The greens were a little slow but that was fine given many of the pin placements. The layout was thoroughly enjoyable, especially from the blue tees. Thank goodness we hooked up with a regular player of the course who showed us some of the aiming points as there were several blind fairways. Staff in the clubhouse was very friendly. The clubhouse had a nice selection of craft beers on sale! And the hot dogs were tasty! We will be back. I live Muni golf!
Fun course
Staff very friendly. Course dry. Fun track to play.
Greens
Course had a challenging layout and some good holes but greens were almost lost. They are trying to recover them so maybe in a couple of months they will be ready.
Great value
Couldn't be happier. Love this place, great value. Highly recommend. It's a public course with a few dry spots, but great location. Great staff! This is a regular place for me.
Pace of play
If you want a 4 hour and 45 minute round, this was the day and place to do it!!! To be fair, we’ve played this course 5 times over the last 12 months and this was the slowest round by far! It appeared that walk-up customers were given priority regardless of reservation times.
Worth the time
Several of the greens are in rough shape. Course is beautiful. Very unique course design. Fun to play. I look forward to playing it again. When they get the greens corrected it’ll be a top notch course.
Quick Round!
Having played this course plenty of times in the past, I anticipated a round starting on Sunday morning at 1145a to take at LEAST 4.5 hours. But to our surprise (and luck!) the course was wide open. We played through one foursome on 10 and didn't see anyone the rest of the way. Tough to beat a 3:15 round!
Suck it up buttercup
I would like to respond to some of the reviews that made me almost choose a different course today. This is a city course built on a landfill, if you expect Quail Holliw you will be disappointed! The layout is great, the fairways have grass and the greens are a little slow and shaggy. It’s very hot out now and they are just trying to keep grass on The greens! If people keep bashing these courses then people won’t play them and they will shut them down. It’s a muni so get over it, you can play here cheap and have a lot of fun and challenges.
First and last time
This is possibly the worst course I’ve ever played. Course design is fine but its not well kept. Greens are not mowed, slower than anything I can remember seeing. Several cart paths looked to be under construction and then just stopped. Huge patches of gravel and bumps. Really starts to gets ugly on the back 9, almost like they forgot the holes were there. I played on a day where it was 95 degrees and didn’t see a water cooler with any water in it until the 16th hole. Saw an employer at about 12 and asked if there was any water and he replied “they were out”. Told me to call the clubhouse, instead of possibly doing it himself being that he works there. Pace of play was incredibly slow, but what can you do there. Overall $45 for a course that should be $20. Wouldn’t come back
The Greens
Played early (0730). Pace of play at that time was excellent. Greens were in need of cut and roll. Extremely slow. Putting on shag carpet. Remainder of course was in good shape however.
Don’t do it
Paid $45 per person to play this course and it was actually the worst course I’ve ever played. Not a hard course whatsoever and wouldn’t be terrible for a new golfer but for the price it’s not even close to worth it. The “greens”, if you can even call them that, were half dirt and half grass. The cart path is crumbling and half of the time you’re just driving on gravel or dirt. In all honesty this course seemed to not have been tended to in years aside from mowing it once or twice a month. Moral of the story is that for $45 there are so many better options and even if this course cost $20 I wouldn’t play it again
Challenging length.... Like putting in the rough
If you want a reasonably priced 18 to grip it and rip it with your friends this is your place.
If you want well manicured fairways and greens this is ain’t yo spot. It was almost like putting on the fairway.
I will say this the course layout on the back would challenge some Korn Ferry tournament players. The Black pin placement is quite tight on a few of the longest holes. Also the terrain changes quite a bit as well on the back.
Good time quick pace even with a group in front I finished in 3:15
Back again
Found another deal from golfnow, so headed back out for 2nd consecutive day.
Pace a little slower on day 2, but tolerable.
Improved score day 2, very happy.
Only complaint, on course water coolers were not maintained. At least 3 coolers were just shy of empty.
High handicap friendly
Course layout is forgiving, and tons of chances to hit GIR.
Greens are slow, but overall, enjoyed round.
This is a good $25 - $30 per round course.
