The course was not mowed. Although it was busy, the pace of play was good. If the course superintendent put some time, energy and money, this could be a decent public course to play.
Decent course, on the right track
Sunset is definitely a starter course. A lot of newer golfers just trying to learn the game. The course layout is pretty good, not too challenging but some fairways get pretty narrow with the tree lines. The tee boxes are pretty level and tended, the fairways are in great shape for a public city course, but the greens need a little TLC. Just patchy as most city owned courses are.
Sunset Hills
Greens in rough shape as are most tee boxes. Not crowded so blazed through the round. Reasonable value for the $$ spent for a practice round.
Don’t do it
Don’t do it. Pace of play was a ridiculously slow. The ‘greens’ looked jacked up and the fairways were full of patches and holes. Will not be playing here again until management gets it together. Was supposed to be a fun day of golf with great weather and I instantly regretted trying this course.
Terrible Course
Terrible golf course, in terrible shape. Most tee boxes were dirt and so were some greens. Way too expensive for the shape of the course
Great Service from Staff, Course Needs Work
Great Staff, but the course wasn’t worth the money we paid. Very dry and lots of dirt patches on the fairways, tee boxes, and greens.
Pleasantly Suprised
Walked 18 starting at 0715 in the morning. Played through one group which was a older foursome, probably play together each week; done in ~3 hours. Tee boxes, fairways, greens all in great condition. Short course (tips are ~6000-6100 yards). If you go too fair outside the fairway, the conditions are in bad shape (rocky, very sparse grass, etc). Greens were small, but flat and easy to read. No frills or fancy amenities, but for a cheap, easy round, I'll definitely play again.
Muni
I get there 3:30 after work. Mostly twosome playing; makes for a quick round. If each gets a cart, can be played in just over 2 hours (not a typo).
Muni so not a lot of money put-in to the course but still ok. Slowest greens I have ever played, tough to convince yourself to have hit it. For the cost, pace, I play once a week.
No Frills at Sunset Hills
If you were to look up 'muni' in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Sunset Hills. It is the quintessential municipal golf course. It has wide open fairways that allow you to miss your tee shot and still play a recovery in most cases. The greens are small. It definitely plays as easy as its 118 slope would indicate. On this day they were rolling very, very slow, but by in large they had plenty of grass on them. The bermuda in the fairways was about halfway to being dormat. The course was fairly wet in several places, athough I can't remember it raining in the last several days, which may indicate drainage issues. The bunkers on the course seemed well maintained and had plenty of sand in them. Teeboxes need some work as some were heavily divoted and sometimes tees were placed on side or downslopes. It has been several years since I last played Sunset Hills, and there has been some improvements made to the course. There were new cart paths in some places. The fleet of carts is fairly new as well. Also, lots of trees have been removed from the course, particularly on the back nine. Each and every staff member I interacted with was very friendly. I honestly think Sunset Hills is about $10 too expensive on their rates based on the value and conditions experienced at similar public courses in the Charlotte area.
Good beginners/higher handicappers course
This is a good course for beginners and higher handicappers. The greens are very small, similar to a 9 hole par 3 course. There are a few blind tee shots where the distance to trouble should be posted at the tee for the benefit of new players. The greens were very slow and not close to what better golfers desire in my opinion. I would not want to pay more than $20 to play 18 with a cart here, late 2013 rates compared to other courses. Pace of play was excellent during the week. We had a 3some that teed off at 12:30 on Wed and we were done at 3:30.
Some problems...GREAT for the $
Played there on Wednesday 11/6. I played as a single.
Front nine....#8 was backed up by 3 groups. I decided to jump to hole#10....NO ONE was on the back nine....absolutely no one! I played three balls per hole, and had a great time. My problem was that there were NO rangers to move the slow group along....so, that one particular group, who played like a six-some, messed up the whole course for everyone else. I have played here many times, and have never run into that problem before, so I'm hoping that it was a one-time event.
I will play there again because I do love the course, and for the money, (Golfnow.com)...it can't be beat!
Greens are as good as I've ever seen them.
The course was as good as I have ever seen it. They've done a lot of work on improving the overall condition. The greens were in great shape. For playing golf at the end of October they had even taken the time to move fallen leaves off of the fairways and from the areas around the greens to make for a very enjoyable round of golf. In the past I would have been a little leery recommending this course to some of my "better" golfing buddies but with the experience that I had this round I would be confident suggesting this course to anyone who plays.
It's a fun golf course for even beginners also has some good views and all the appropriate things needed
It was one heck of a deal I must say, got to play 18 holes for under 13 bucks! That's less than a dollar a hole, great and friendly staff! This was the first time ever booking tee time online and I'm not gonna do it any different from now on. I've played this course many times and actually got my first ever hole in one!! Hole # 8 146 yds even in the rain! It was just a great all around expirence!
Great course
Course was well maintained. I am a guest from another state and found the players to be friendly. I was invited to play with a couple and had great fun.
Recommended course
This course has both easy and challenging holes, is well maintained, and is fairly priced. Recommended.
Great course for beginers and experienced golfers.
The course was in good shape when I played, all but one green was in good condition and the fairways were well maintained.
Course needed some attention but played nicely.
After some further improvements, this course will be an excellent place to play. There are holes that are excellently laid out. The course is long and varying.
Fun for beginners
Sunset is a fun course for bringing out the kids fairways at open Greens on the small and hard side
