Tanglewood Golf Club - Championship Course
About
Since Tanglewood Golf Club's Championship Course opened in 1958 it has consistently ranked as one of the top public courses in the U.S. This Robert Trent Jones layout has 99 bunkers. It was designed to test the best golfers in the world and fits Jones' design philosophy of "easy bogey, hard par." RTJ believed the long iron shot separated the championship golfer from the average golfer and created several holes with that in mind. The seventh and 12th holes, both par 3s, play over 230 yards from the back tees. The par-4 11th hole is 490 yards. Fortunately for the recreational golfer, Jones built multiple teeing grounds to Tanglewood's Championship Course enjoyable for all skill levels.

This course is great with over 120 bunkers. If you don't have a special or golfnow this course is over 30 bucks and 40 on weekends and over all worth 25 tops
My, How The Mighty Have Fallen
I wanted to love this course, but after the first 2 holes, I knew I couldn't honestly say it. What you hear about the bunkers is true. There are pits in the course. Bunkers have sand, pits don't. The greens need to be rolled so badly, it not funny. Ball marks everywhere. I was told this course is now owned by the local municipality, which tells me that no "real" money is spent on it's upkeep. What a shame...
This course has alot of bunkers
The golf course has many bunkers on the course. It would be great if you could hit the ball out of the sand in stand of red clay. Only a few bunkers had sand in them. Question the pictures advertised show white sand only seen one bunker with white sand.
Good layout
I enjoyed the whole course it was a challenge but fair.
9/25 at Tanglewood Championship Course
The Tanglewood Championship Course is always a favorite to play. However, on this day, the greens were quite slow and some of the bunkers were very wet (muddy). Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and will definitely return
course good, bunkers terrible!!!!!!
Everything about this course was really good except for the bunkers. Concrete hard, you could not rake . Every green is well protected with bunkers, so unless you are a very good golfer you will be in the bunkers. Almost unfair, you will notice I did not call it sand.
Nice course to play
Great fun. Great layout. Bunkers not in good shape very wet and packed. Can't remember any rain lately that would cause that. The course overall was better than other courses I have played.i will be playing again soon
great course
one of the best public courses in nc
Outstanding golf course
Even though the greens were just airated and sanded, the course still played well. Lots of sand traps.
Great Layout, fairways great, greens slow/rough
I have played Twood Championship course many times over the years - fairways were great - greens were slow, bumpy probably stressed by summer heat. Bunkers not in good condition at all. overall at this point in the summer still a good value for the money.
Bring your sand bucket
Course in good condition, greens were soft due to abundant rain, good for attacking the pin, however u need to hit'em straight, all greens are surrounded by traps...
Great as ever
Hadn't been here in 20 years and was more difficult than i remembered ( maybe just can't play like 20 years ago) Greens rolled perfectly even after them having several tournaments over the weekend and lots of ball marks. Fairways were perfect and rough fair...played the ball down all day even after a driving 30 min rain that had the green we were by completely covered in water it drained in only a few minutes. Have seen several complaints about the sand in the bunkers, but it's typical NC dirt/sand and was no problem to play out of. Excellent conditions overall. Nice clean, quiet carts, friendly staff......only bad mark is Forsyth county charges (taxes!) every car $2 and that is not mentioned anywhere.
Nothing more than average
I walked into the pro shop having already looking online, at their own public website, and the price was $32, though I didn't book and figured I'd do it at the counter. The youngster at the desk said the price was $49 until twilight at 4. I informed his website said $32 and he said he didn't know and I could book it online if I wanted. He could have just did it while looking at the computer for me, but couldn't care less...he was more occupied with the food he was eating and the friend in the office. That showed me enough about the way the place was run these days.
The course was okay, the tee boxes were rough and cut very high. The fairways were also somewhat high cut but with solid grass coverage with many bare spots. The greens were bumpy and pretty heavily played which is to be expected from a public park course. The bunkers were pretty good, you could tell they have added sand pretty recently. The only complaint about the bunkers are they are all pretty large in size, and never more than two ranks, always on the opposite side you will need them...pretty annoying. The staff kid was enough to leave a sour taste of the entire facility. You think a course that has no one there would appreciate your business...he couldn't care less
Good but a bit overpriced
Overall a good, not great, track a bit outside of Winston-Salem. Tee to fairway was pretty well maintained. However, like some other reviews have indicated, the greens and especially the numerous bunkers, could use a bit of work.
Being from the South and used to Bermuda greens, these did play a bit slow, but did roll consistently. It was more of an adjustment on my part for speed. But considering there are over 80 sand traps on this course, and are the main mode of protection, they really need to be better maintained. At the very least, the ones that are in areas with common misses. It had not rained for a few days before our round, but I still was hitting out of wet sand/mud, and many times the bunkers had puddles in them. That did affect the enjoyment of the course.
Pace of play was very good for a Saturday. We got out on an early tee time, and finished 18 in about 4 hours. Amenities were good, not great. The clubhouse was a bit older, and there was no GPS or any frills included on the carts. No beer cart girls either.
Do recommend, but would pick other courses in the area over this for the price.
Championship Course, Muni Condition
This is a true championship layout that is not in championship course condition. Not that it is in bad shape on the tees, fairways, and greens. But as you play you can imagine what it must have been like when they played professional events here.
One of the features I like most about this course (especially in this area) is that it was designed to be walked. No quarter mile walks from green to tee, no extreme elevation changes (though the course is hardly flat).
There is alot of sand on this course, but if you play the right tee box and think your way around you can avoid alot of it. At the same time, the biggest liability of the course conditioning is the EXTREMELY uneven condition of the sand - hard, soft, white, red, rocks, smooth. Since the sand traps are one of the biggest features of the course, this is particularly frustrating.
In the condition it is in, I would not pay the "rack rate" to play Tanglewood Championship, but we often find good discounts on Golf Now which make playing here a good value indeed.
WOW watch out for the bunkers!
Great course, it will really test your shot making ability. My only complaint is that the bunkers need some help. There's 92 of them & most of them need better drainage & more sand. For a public course it is a fabulous layout & well maintained. You definitely earn your score.
It will be another 15 years!
Well I would say nothing if I could, but....If your course has five to ten bunkers, you must maintain them! The staff could not of been more rude! You do not have that nice of a course! Be happy anyone is paying to play there...no wonder they lost the champions tour event. The conditions of the greens are SLOOOOOOOOOW! Back swings should not be necessary for 5ft putts. No two bunkers were maintained the same. The maintenance crew can sure waist their time driving the gator way too fast during play and weedeating the sides of the cart parts while people try to hit shots. Maybe if they would tell you to rake and place at the pro shop I could of saved about eight strokes. I played the course in its heyday, it's just a shame to see it in such disrepair!
Worst bunkers in years
Course layout good. Lots of bunkers but they were incredibly hard mud in almost every case. Like hitting off of concrete. If the had real sand and raked this would be a very nice course.
