Tanglewood Golf Club - Championship Course
About
Since Tanglewood Golf Club's Championship Course opened in 1958 it has consistently ranked as one of the top public courses in the U.S. This Robert Trent Jones layout has 99 bunkers. It was designed to test the best golfers in the world and fits Jones' design philosophy of "easy bogey, hard par." RTJ believed the long iron shot separated the championship golfer from the average golfer and created several holes with that in mind. The seventh and 12th holes, both par 3s, play over 230 yards from the back tees. The par-4 11th hole is 490 yards. Fortunately for the recreational golfer, Jones built multiple teeing grounds to Tanglewood's Championship Course enjoyable for all skill levels.

Championship Course?!? Maybe for billy goats!
Appeared to have been a decent course 30-40 years ago maybe but it was obvious that for whatever reasons, it has been neglected and abused for many years. Bunkers everywhere but all needed sand. Some sand was red brick sand, some was white, and some grey. Wasted drive, time and money.
No sand in greenside bunkers
Great layout, fairways are probably the best in the Triad considering the harsh winter. Very challenging course with extreme number of bunkers. Every green is surrounded by deep bunkers. Bump and run to green is impossible here. If you are unfortunate enough to play from a greenside bunker (virtually no sand in the bunkers) you might as well leave your sand wedge in your bag. What sand there is appears to be construction red clay sand with numerous pebbles and is extremely hard-packed. All you can do is chip out of the bunkers. Hopefully they will invest in quality sand!!!
Slow golf on a Sunday afternoon
I was the first time out at Tanglewood and I didn't know that you first have to pay a parking fee before entering the park property. But it was worth the $2 extra.
The starter was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the course. He let me play as a single and gave me good advice. The layout and landscape is really very nice. There are only 2 things to complain about. Fivesomes including young kids were allowed to play the Championship Course on a Sunday afternoon. Play was extremely slow! Secondly, the plenty of bunkers and traps would need some new sand. It was hard to play out of the traps.
Despite these two issues I enjoyed it. Overall a great golf course.
Great layout
You can see that this course was a top course in the 80s. Very challenging around the greens with some great holes. A must try for all golfers. Greens were in great nick.
Great Course to play!
The championship course is an excellent layout, and was in pretty good shape for the lack of rain they have gotten recently. Pace of play was good even as a single at 10am. The course is pretty challenging with lots of bunkers and fast greens. Be sure to keep it in play here, or you will certainly pay the price. Great value!
The layout is second to none!
I really enjoyed the layout. The greens were in really great shape. The fairways were consistent and very good as well. It rained hard the day before I played and there was no real evidence of wet conditions other than the sand in the bunkers being firm and damp. Many challenging drives and approach shots. Being on target into the greens will yield birdies.
Nice course
Greens rolled smooth and fast. Bunkers everywhere with red clayish sand. Get out of position and you are in trouble. Fun course for the player that likes to position shots.

Gorgeous Day for Golf!
We played the Championship Course at Tanglewood Park for the first time on an absolutely beautiful day! The course was in excellent condition. Tee boxes and fairways were lush and green. Greens were somewhat fast and in great shape. Played our round in less than 4 hours despite hitting many of the course's 98 bunkers. Staff was very friendly. Great value at $23! Will definitely play again.
Tons o' sand
Excellent golf course, target golf. You need your A game for this one. Very enjoyable, if your game is off you will get tons of sand practice. Only complaint is sand is inconsistent.
Great Value great Course
Played late and caught afternoon special. Could not believe the value of this course. 36 hole facility. Played both over 2 days. The Championship Course is a wonderful Robert Trent Jones golf course. It hosted the 1974 PGA Championship. The golf course was in great shape for the time of year and you can tell that course is well maintained year round. Great setting in Reynolds Park . Very scenic course. Greens were great.
T'wood doesn't disappoint
Consistency. That's what Tanglewood's Championship course delivers. Greens are always firm, quick and true, and challenging as well. Fairways are generally wide and forgiving, but bring your sand game. Played 18 holes in four hours on a busy Sunday afternoon. Bunkers could use more sand; that would be my only criticism. Best golf deal going in the area.
Greeat Day
Great course, and very nice people all around, weather was beautiful finally for our winter.
Tanglewood
I have played Tanglewood before and I think it is a great course. This time the weather was very poor and I plan to come back when the weather is better.
Tanglewood Championship course
Way to much golf course for my skills. I would like to play it again when the wind was under 20 mph.
It is definitely a champions course.
championship
That's why they call it the championship course. Very well laid out and a great design. You will be very impressed. Don't play the back tees unless you are on your A game.
Poor customer service
We arrived an hour ahead of our 12:30 tee time to hit some balls and warm up. We were not notified of the "30 minute" delay due to frost until we arrived to the first tee and was informed by the started. This delay resulted in us teeing off at 1:15 and not being able to complete our round because of slow play. By the third hold we were waiting on every shot and there was a full hole open ahead. The group ahead of us was 3 seniors and one youth that was apparently getting lessons because one guy told him every shot what he needed to do then took time to explain what he did wrong each time. Ranger was informed but nothing was done about it. Course was OK for the time of year but it seemed that no one playing there knew about repairing greens because there were ball marks everywhere. Will try it again in the spring and not around a holiday.
Very good playablity
Almost excellent greens. They were a little beat up.
BRING YOUR A GAME
Playing the correct tees is key for this course. Being a par 70 even 6100 can make the par 4's long. There are a lot of bunkers most of which are in good shape with avg sized undulating greens. If you can't putt, expect a high number. Course is well maintained and laid out.
Best Layout in Forsyth County
Probably my 100th time playing the Championship course and I always love it.... Just the best value in the Triad really.
good tough course
you will not find a better golf course for the money, also get some bunker practice in before your round.
