Challenge Golf Club sprawls across a scenic stretch of rolling farmland that sits alongside the Haw River. The lush hills are accented with mature hardwood forests, providing a scenic setting for a round of golf. The hilly terrain on this golf course will test not only your shot-making abilities but also your accuracy. Lakes provide even more natural hazards. Golfers can expect a few perilous carries over water. To add to the layout's difficulty, there are numerous bunkers strategically placed along the greens. The golf course is arguably one of the area's most formidable tests. Although thoughtful strategy and creative shot making will be generously rewarded, it’s not an overly punishing layout. Challenge Golf Club's final hole is a memorable par 5 that's definitely tough, but if you play it smart it could also be a great birdie opportunity.

Course was in very good condition considering how much rain we received.

Course was in good shape and seemed to use the natural elevation quite well. Good mix of short and long holes. There was a little crab in the greens but I suspect that was due to weather. I will definitely return to play again.

Great course, just out of the way

Course is kept up. Nice fairways, greens roll true, not a gimmicky course. Just a nice fair course with some surprisingly beautiful holes. Yes it's not a fun ride from the triangle but worth checking out for the value. Not crowded on the weekdays at all. Has a fun lil bar next to their club pool. Will definitely play again.

Nice Saturday Outing, BUT...

This course opened in 1996 and I played it way back then. I have been amiss in not returning sooner. My group had an eleven thirty tee time and we were off right on time. two holes open ahead of us due in part, I think, to the club member/guest tournament having gone off earlier in the morning. No one trailing us, we could see, until the 7th hole. What a nice course to have all to yourself.
As some have stated, the rough is a bit high but did not cause my group any undue stress, we quite enjoyed the well manicured layout from tee through the greens. Greens putted very true but could have been quicker for my taste.
I have to say personally I have two complaints. First the beverage cart which came around was operated in poor fashion, I am sure the girl had no training in how and when to approach a group of customers. In addition she had no protection as the cart was without a top and windshield. Brave was that girl as she approached playing groups with no apparent fear.
The other complaint I have is related to 'Rangers'; why bother if they are not instructed on how to ensure pace of play? Remember the group behind us after 7? They hit into us on ten. Now, ten tee is a blind shot, but they did not bother to check ahead, although they caught us at the turn in the snack bar. There was a 'Ranger' on ten near us and, to my knowledge, never spoke to any of my foursome nor the group behind us, even after seeing the ball hit our cart. A proper ranger would have seen the group behind was 3 and could have suggested a place for us to allow the threesome to play through. Why have rangers if they have no sense of how to keep play moving; is that not their purpose?
Now if you have an opportunity to play The Challenge, go for it. You'll be glad you did. I will return sooner rather than later, but I have no faith in their rangers performing their duties in a proper manner.

This is a place to play

This course is both fair and difficult so if you have a game and the desire to test it, this course is GREAT. Played from the tips but it appears to have a player friendly version when you move forward if you show up with some not so skilled guests to keep it all fair and balanced. The greens were in good shape and cared for could be a little faster but it has been raining every day for weeks so in a dry day they could be perfect I don't know as it rained while we were playing as well.

If you are in the state you really need to try this track!!!

Nice hilly course, greens were good.

I like the course a lot.
That being said, 2 negatives are:
The rough is cut a bit too high causing slower play and undue difficulty. The course can stand on it's own with moderate rough that the average player could advance his ball out of a little better.

Also, Someone decided that it was more important to build a few houses rather than have a practice range, so they closed the range and built some houses in that area.
No hitting balls before the round (unless you count hitting off a mat and into a net)

I like the facilities, no driving range, great course for iron play.

It is important that your tee shot find the fairway on this course. Requires great shot making, plays a little tight. if you do miss the fairway, put another ball in play, you will not find your ball.

But the course is fair, in very good condition, the greens are the best they have been in the past two years. Never any hassle to play this course.

This course is aptly named!!!!

Only real dislike was a 212 yard par 3 (17th). If you see this hole, you will know what I mean. For a hole of that length, should be a little less trouble if you miss.

Great greens!

This course challenges you plenty from the blue or the gold tees. Hit is straight, chance of finding balls that are sprayed are small. Lots of blind shots, but on short holes, so it makes it fun!

This course is well maintained and has good sandwiches for lunch

I love this course, the conditions were good, well maintained. Number 18 is always a challenge! The course played slow due to pretty weather and a number of players on the course. There are no bathrooms on the course, just port a potties, which had roaches crawling around on the seat! Not ideal situation for ladies. Other than that, it is a great course to play.

The course was fair, but challanging. A couple of good risk reward holes and some great elevation changes.

I found the course to be very playable, and in excellent condition. The course is mostly secluded except for a green and a tee box where you can see I-85. All-in-all, a very enjoyable day.

I would like to see a rating for course condintion between maintained and pristine. Maintained seems to indicate doing the bare minimum of maintenance and this couse was better than that, though not pristine.

Course looked good but missing some things

The course was in overall good condition and played well. There were a few holes, seeing as how I was playing the course for the first time, were I would like to either see a layout on the score card or on the hole sign. There were a couple of holes that needed some maintenance but overall good for the money.

Spectacular for $22

This course never fails to satisfy. The greens rolled perfect, and no matter which tees you hit from, it hold true to its name... The Challenge. Hole 9 fairway is under repair, and was the only fairway the was iffy. Always a pleasure to swing here!

Great moderately priced course.

First time playing this course and we only played 9 holes, but we were impressed. The course is challenging, but not unforgiving so long as you don't make a bad mistake. Mostly ample fairways that will may you pay if you miss badly by having to deal with steep terrain, water or woods. Though the course was obviously full, only the party ahead and behind were evident due to the layout of the course, so you have the feeling of not being on a busy course. Good price and highly recommended.

overall solid course, nice greens, bad bunkers

Had a great rate via Golfnow. Friday afternoon and course was not busy so pace of play was no issue. Course was in nice shape except for 9th fairway (bumpy, sporadic growth) and various bunkers. Some were water-filled and other were just plain in rough shape. Others were not raked by rude golfers which is no fault of the course. Greens rolled nicely.

Very nice course

Was a great value and for the GolfNow deal of $18, was well worth the price. I would return again, as the course has a nice layout and is truly 'challenging'.
