About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

Still working its way back
Apparently the course is trying to get back into shape after some issues and there is still a ways to go. Tee boxes are often turtlebacked with sand filling in spots trying to grow grass. Greens are also variable with spots without grass or sand areas, making putting a challenge to figure out when the ball will skid on earth versus be pulled by the grain. It also appears that a good number of the sand bunkers have been converted to grass, perhaps as they are easier to maintain? If you get a deal on the tee time it might be worth it, particularly given the challenges faced by other local courses at this price point. Else, give it another spring to grow in.
Discount golf,discouint course
Wed at 1pm tee time and I was alone on the course. Wed is a slow day and it was cool and overcast so no players. I figured it is not the most popular course in the area due to overall condition, which was fair to poor overall - about average for a public course.

We enjoyed the round. We were in the later afternoon so we practically had the course to ourselves. We had a hard time finding the tee markers. We enjoyed that it was a challenging course especially as it was our first time but it won’t be our last time to play there.
Island West
Choose this course because of a discount and it's rating. Course layout was pretty good, but two holes were alongside the highway. Greens were extremely slow, somewhat inconsistent, and not in the best repair. Fairways seemed below average compared to a nearby course.. Bunkers were good. Played in the afternoon and the course was uncrowded
Would play again only for a significant discount.
Cart path only
Was advised on arrival that it was cart path only because they were putting down fertilizer. My first time I've ever seen this in my 55 years of playing and working on a golf course
Island West
I played here two years ago and the course was not in good shape. What a difference! Very good conditions now. Highly recommend you try it. If you played it before, you will be very pleased with the improvents. Tees, greens and fairways all much improved.

Another great day and round at Island West. Staff is amazingly friendly and helpful. Played with 2 friends who had never played the course. They were pleasantly surprised. Layout is challenging and conditions getting better each time I paly.
Great people / Great greens
I play this course whenever I'm in the Bluffton area. The staff is always friendly and on point. It's in between seasons, the course is a little thin. But, the greens are rolling fast and true. The front 9 is a little tight and technical, the back 9 opens up for a great finish to the round.
Back on Track
Working it way back, friendly staff. Pace was great need a little work but good price and not to busy.
West Island Golf Fun
This was our first time playing golf at West Island and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Course conditions were good, the hole layouts and challenge were great. Definitely playing this course again.
