Island West Golf Club

About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

Pleasantly surprised and very pleased. I have always road by the course in my car and only saw the 2 roadway holes and wondered if the other 16 were as nicely laid out. A hidden gem for the price I paid. Very pleased with my overall experience at the course.
don't get off the fairway
Course is fairly straight with very few forced carries so is a friendly course for higher handicap players. 1st cur was too tall so a ball just inches off fairway was hard to find as a result pace of play was VERY slow and frustrating
Hit it straight!
Greens putt nicely. If you miss the fairway, it is not easy to find your ball. Staff very good. Hole diagrams on tee markers would be helpful.

The course was in good condition. Some areas were a little sparse with grass, but not many. The tees, fairways and greens were all in good condition. The layout is challenging and fair. I played two balls and barely saw another golfer. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Good range and practice area. A bonus was that the bar carried Yuengling beer. I booked on golf now for $52.00. Excellent value, when similar golf courses are $90.00 to $150.00. A good day on the course.

The course was in very good condition, the staff was very nice and helpful, but the course is just too difficult for my age and skill lever (82 and 32 handicap indes)
Great for the money
Excellent value for HHI area. Greens are great. Good driving range. The rough needed mowing. Some of the rough was long enough to seed. Employees are outstanding.
Really nice
Really nice place to play, had midmorning teatime on a weekend which is hard to come by around this area. Staff were very friendly. Course was in good shape. Prices were reasonable, Butters will definitely play there again.
Good time
Enjoyed playing here. Course was in great shape. Bunkers need a little work, but all in all, a good play
Vacation 9/24
So, we had not played Island West since before COVID or since they had sold the course to a developer and the community bought it back. It took a lot of years to bring the course back into shape and they’ve done a great job. My wife enjoyed our day trying to remember some of the holes and the greens ran pretty good. If your looking for a quite day out playing golf you might want to give this course a play..we also played the course in 3 hours which was also nice to not wait behind people.
Great value
Course is an older design with EVERY hole laid out differently. A few elevation changes and a lot of water, hazards and tree lined fairways. The traps were poor quality sand and not well maintained. Very hard to find your ball in the rough. An inch shorter would help play and reduce frustration. Overall a great value at $45 for 18 with a cart.
Going Downhill
I played here for a number of years before it closed several years ago. It was a good layout and value then, but not now. It is really not worth it to come off island to play here any longer. I know they had ownership & management problems, but the course has to be drastically improved to get outside play, especially at $70 per round. The greens were unplayable at best. Staff was nice. I really can’t believe that the neighborhood players can be happy with the current conditions. Good luck, but I won’t be back.
Glorified Muni
This is a no frills course, from the spartan clubhouse to the absence of GPS equipment in the carts. To say that the greens were shaggy is an understatement. The grass bunkers and tee boxes were essentially weeds. The bunkers with just giant litter boxes, including the cat prints and excrement. Not the dewsweepers, but the first maintenance personnel was seen on the 15th hole (10:00 AM). Most of the staff seemed bothered by my presence, except the starter/bag drop attendant (Joe maybe). He was the star of the course. At $75, it is a ripoff.
Returning golfer
Canceled reservations at another local course to play again at IW.
Course on point
This course is so well maintained andy enjoyable to play on. Staff are so accommodating.
Beautiful
Such a beautiful course with amazing wildlife. Will be back again.
Zero stars is possible
This course was absolutely terrible. The greens were slow and super bumpy. I have played course where the fairway where shorter than the greens at this course. The fairways have not been cut in weeks as there was clumps of dead grass clippings all over them. I will NEVER EVER play this course again and nobody else should either. I would rather play double at any other course in this area then play this course again.
