Island West Golf Club

About
Designed by Clyde Johnston and popular PGA Tour star Fuzzy Zoeller, the Island West Golf Club is a course built around natural marshland and follows the landscape presenting a rolling, tree-lined course.
As one would imagine a course with Zoeller's fingerprints, Island West in Bluffton was built to be a fun, entertaining play, and has succeeded in its mission. Playing to 6,803 with a 129 slope rating from the tips, it's a solid test for the skillful yet playable for the not-so skillful.
Water comes in to play on 10 holes here, so the bold will have many risk-reward opportunities. Accuracy off the tee is a must on many of the tree-lined holes, yet other holes feature wide fairways. Island West is exactly the type of course you'd imagine Zoeller being a part of, but Johnston's expertise also shines through.

Muddy Mess
Course should have been closed. Very poor drainage on many holes. Even the cart paths were impassable in some areas. Played it once three years ago after Hurricane Mathew and wasn’t impressed. Thought I’d give it another chance. Save your money.
Goat Farm
Played this facility in the past. Thought we would give it one more try. Totally disappointed. If Fuzzy Zoelller ever came back to look at his layout he would pull his name off of it. Never again....
very disappointed ,just top dressed over watered greens. cart paths, club house and most everything else needs some tender loving care!!! wound not recommend. left after 9 holes.
Horrible conditions. Worst bunkers I’ve ever seen. What do you expect for $28? Can’t believe this is a Brown property. Should have warning signs for bumpy cart paths.
Decent value for the money
We played today, staff were great, course in in Ok condition. There needs to be some money spent on the cart paths & club house. We liked the layout. Challenging but fair. Great lunch deal.
Course is in really rough shape
Have played here many times in past years. I took a group here today and was totally embarrassed. Greens are slow and not being maintained. Some tees have almost no grass. First cut rough is long and nearly impossible to find balls. Fairways are rough with lots of dead or dormant grass. Really surprised that the Brown group has let this course go downhill to this extent.
The only good news is that my group won’t ask me to make tee times or pick a course again.
Skimping on maintenance
Sunday morning tee time.- first cut of rough 4 inch Bermuda. Had to be directly over over ball to see less than foot from the fairway. Greens were neither cut nor whipped so the greens were abysmally slow. The greens were true, though. Even the starter said to stay out of the bunkers.
The layout is still good and is much tighter than Sky Caddy would have you believe, so I’ll probably try it next trip.
Improving
Played this course several times this year and last being a couple months ago. The course conditions continue to improve. The fairways have been good for a while and the greens have improved quite a bit since the last time I played and in good condition. Only two recommendations are that they work on the bunkers and some of the cart paths need some work. It’s an excellent value for the money and would recommend the course.
Been a while.
Decided to try the course out based on reviews. I have not played there in over a year and the greens was so horrible then I didn’t even finish the front 9. Now the greens are beautiful. They widened the fringes but desperately need to mow them tighter and the greens looks phenomenal! The putting green still had a few bad spots and there is still a few greens that had a few bad spots on them but wow what a difference.
Now biggest complaint now is the rough. It is so thin and y’all that the ball just goes straight down and hard to find. The gang reel mower these use to cut it makes the rough look horrible as well! And looks like they are going to start mowing the fairways wider in places as well. The greens speed was very slow around a 9 max on stint but they rolled very true. They had a small amount of rain through the night but was not cart path only and should have been on a few holes. Course is on the right path to getting back to a golf course. Really wish they wouldn’t have made the tee box’s smaller and why would they ever stop mowing the walking paths from tee box to tee box and from cart path to tee box’s since their rough is shin high is beyond me. Was a total let down!
So I want to teach the maintenance people on this golf course to that people play through water cutting the grass is not cut the grass in the middle of their swinging the club
We liked it
Played today and course was damp (cart path only) but we had gotten a lot of rain the night before, staff was great no complaints at all.
Only complaint if any was greens were a little dry with a few brown patches (was worried prior because of reviews but a lot of people complain about green conditions in March and April and NO grass is perfect in those months!)
Overall loved the course, fairways were beautiful, side rough still playable and somewhat easy to hit out of. Played a course down the road last weekend and the tall bent grass along the fairways was awful, 6” high and you lost balls easily and when you did find them it was next to impossible to play, not the case at islands west. Good challenging course we will be back. Son and law I both agreed best we’ve played this year

We are very happy you enjoyed your experience at Island West! The greens were on the dry side last week due to an irrigation leak that forced us to shut the pumps down for a couple of days. All up and running now. Thank you for playing with us and the review!
Good course
First time
I anticipated playing the course, but found the greens were in horrible condition and in poor condition. Staff was friendly but I don't think the course gets much play.
Day of golf
Staff was super friendly and helpful. The course is tight with a lot of hazards splitting the fairways ,especially on the front 9. Course was well maintained, with the exception of the greens. They were being areated, and we knew that in advance. The greens were bumpy and tough to read....but overall we enjoyed it.....we will go back
Greens recovering from last two years
Staff very friendly and told the truth about conditions of the course which I found refreshing. Greens coming back but some bumpy and sparse but most ran true but were slow. Cart paths need work and had to dodge large holes and bumps on about nine holes.. fairways in good shape but some weeds and grassy tufts in some areas. Some tee areas in rough shape, could use larger tee areas so they could move hitting areas to help recovery. Senior tees mostly just slight moves from white or red tees. Price point seems fair given the higher cost of golf in this area.
I played several more-than-double-the-cost on island courses this week and Island West was in better condition than most. My only complaint is with the sand traps; hard and many with puddles. Other than that, I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone from the the pro shop to course maintenance workers were all very friendly and welcoming.
We appreciate your review of Island West and thank you for playing with us! Brown Golf does have plans to address the bunkers and cart path issues.
