Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.

Originally opened in 1988 as a private club called Crickentree, the course changed its name and opened to public when it changed ownership in 1996. The golf course is known for its beautiful setting that has everything from meandering streams to towering hardwoods. There is also a scenic 17-acre lake that comes into play on a few holes. The risk-reward layout appeals to players of all skill levels. With good course management, the rewards are plenty, but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper. The golf course is just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, equipped with holes that will please long hitters as well as shorter, trickier holes.

challenging course

Course management is a must. Tight fairways with large undulating greens. Course could be maintained a little better.

Challenging course, enjoyable setting

If you are inconsistent off the tee, bring an extra sleeve (or 2) of balls. Fairways are narrow, and balls difficult to find in the woods. Contour of fairways and greens are challenging but fair.

Very suprised

After reading a few reviews I was concerned that I made a mistake booking this course. Only 3 cars were in the lot when we arrived at 10:00am, another bad sign I thought. We checked in, got a few range balls and warmed up a bit. We teed it up at 10:45 and never saw another golfer the remainder of the day. Other than a few bad spots on a couple of greens, the course was in great playing condition. Most fairways are tree lined, with numerous water hazards to maneuver around as well. 4 sets of tees to challenge any skill set. Very enjoyable, and a great Hot deal price on Golf Now

This course is challenging, but not overly complex

Had a great experience playing this course yesterday. Played during the day on Friday and zoomed through the course with my wife, who hadn't played in 2 years. The course is in great shape.

A pleasant surprise! Not sure about the negatives.

Booked my time as a single on Golf Now. Three (3) inches of rain the previous day, and the course was playable. I saw quite a few negative reviews about the course conditions, the greens, the food and beverage, the staff and even the cart paths. Well, maybe my standards just aren't as high as some others. All the greens were in excellent shape, with the exception of No. 10, which has some obvious problems. The fairways were in good shape, but the bunkers were mostly full of water due to all the rain. The staff could not have been more considerate and welcoming. Played by myself in 3 hours, and took my time. Yes, the cart paths have a lot of bumpy spots due to tree roots. Of course, without the trees, people would complain about no shade!
My advice, give them a try and keep an open mind. I, for one, will come back the next time I am in the area.
With regard to the golf itself, I suggest you play the appropriate tees and keep it in play. There is a premium on straight shots of the correct distance. Lots of slope in these greens, and they are pretty fast, so play some extra break on the putts. Have fun!

Great value

Booked through Golfnow. The course was practically empty Thursday afternoon. Played in less than 3 hours. Very few straight putt lies. Only complaint is the cart paths are brutal. Roots and buckling make for a rough ride but the course was in great condition. Fairways are nice and greens rolled true.

Great layout

Play the course for the first time. I thought it was a very interesting layout an assortment of holes. A lot of elevation changes to challenge club selection. Course could be in better shape but was still good. Great value for the money I paid through GolfNow.

Really good value!

The course was in really good shape and this was a really good deal! The only downside to the whole round was the selection of food at the turn, but that was the smallest of details to an otherwise great course!

With better conditioning I'd give it another chance

This course has the potential to be a great course. Unfortunately it just wasn't in great shape. The greens, bunkers, tees, and conditioning all leave a lot to be desired. Looking past the course conditions, I thought the course was really good. I would not recommend this course for beginners due to the elevation changes and absolute need to hit the ball in the fairway off the tee. In fact even hitting the fairway doesn't guarantee you'll have a good shot to the green. This course will really test your game. On a side note I was not able to locate this course on any of the typical GPS apps that I use which made it that much more difficult to play as I did not have a laser GPS with me. All and all I would absolutely enjoy this course were it in good condition and will bring a hand held GPS for distances if I ever play it again.

Challenging layout

Played in a twosome on Sunday late morning, a quick check-in, where we were provided a yardage book (bonus!). Course was in great shape overall (teeboxes/fairways/approaches), but a few greens did have some damaged areas that fortunately only came in to play a few times. Course knowledge is a definite plus, and would likely have turned a lot of my doubles and triples into pars and bogies. I will definitely play Crickentree again.

Fun time

This course was in good shape and had a nice layout which requires strategy at the tee-box. Multiple lay-up holes as well as diverse par 3 looks and clean/fast greens.

Course was in great shape

Fairways rough and tee boxes were in great shape. The greens were a little slow but overall they were good. Front nine pace of play was slow but we were able to go around slow group on 10th tee.
