Lightning Fast Greens
As the title suggests, the greens on this course are very fast. Tee to green I didn't find it to terribly difficult but the slope and speed of the greens made par very difficult even when hitting greens in regulation. I like the course but you'd better practice your putting before you go.
Nice greens, forgiving rough
Excellent greens, firm but rolled true. Speed of greens was moderate fast but not crazy fast. The rough is not punishing so a wayward shot was recoverable. I conside #10 and 13 to be the most difficult. My only complaint was the flag positions on several holes were not properly indicated as to front, center and back. In combination with a false front you could select the wrong approach club. Perhaps not a problem with a laser rangefinder since the fagsticks had laser reflectors on them. Beautiful fall day. We teed off at 12 noon , the course was fully booked but finished in under 4hrs. Never waited on a shot. Very accomodating staff. Enjoyed it.
The course is conviniently located and a great place to play.
Always a pleasure to play there.
Excellent Value
Lovely course in great shape. Staff was friendly and helpful. Excellent layout and made for a challenging round. Would highly recommend.
Great course
The course was in great shape. A few wet areas from the recent rain but nothing to be concerned about. It was my first time playing here, and even though it was an hour drive, I will definitely be back for more. The greens rolled true and there were no bad lies in the fairway. Loved the course and it is a steal for 30 bucks.
Great course, in spectacular autumn shape
The customer service was a mixed bag, as you'd pretty much expect. Got what I needed, got on the course. Not too bad. The course itself is in immaculate shape (at least compared to what is usually seen in these parts around this time of year). Notably, the course was extremely firm. Often had to play some rollout, even for my wedges. Fairly difficult greens overall. I though the distance (played blue) was great, but would probably step it back the the Rocks (longest tees) next time. I was within reach of every Par 5 in two and even got within 50 yards of the greens on the Par 4s a handful times, granted a lot of that was due to being able to shape the ball around the doglegs. If you play straight, the Blues may play a little longer. I will say the pace of play this particular afternoon was fairly slow. I don't usually mind waiting behind some groups. I like to practice around the green after finishing holes. But, as the last man on the course, I was barely able to finish before dusk. This was not because I started very late, but because some obvious very amateur players were struggling...often taking 30 minutes on a hole I'd play in less than half that amount of time. Overall I really enjoyed my afternoon. With some glimpses of the mountains, and fabulous scenery all around, Links O'Tryon is a wonderful place to knock the ball around.
fairways & greens were great
The course is in good shape try to keep it in the fairway the rough is a little hard to get out of
Course is in excellent shape and greens have recovered
The course is in the best shape I have seen it the last few years - fairways are very nice, the rough is long enough to deter errant shots but not brutally punishing, and the greens (that were replaced a few years ago but then went through some patchy kill spots) have fully recovered and are the best that I have ever seen them - true roll and consistent speed throughout all 18 holes. We finished in less than 4 hours and enjoyed some great lunch after the round. I will return as many times as I can.
Out there
Nice place to play. Had a good time
Tryon
Worth the drive. Good rate and loads of fun!
Best condition ever!
We've played LoT about a dozen times in the last year. This is by far the best condition it has been in during that time. Greens rolled true, slow, but true. Fairways were in great shape. Rough was awful, which is what rough is supposed to be like! Tee boxes were in great shape as well. VERY PLEASED WITH THE CONDITION! Staff is always kind, from pro shop to those maintaining condition. If you're within an hour, it's worth the drive.
Nice course, greens inconsistent
We really enjoy playing this course. It's about a 45 minute drive, so it's definitely worth it. Some of the greens are in tremendous shape, some need a little help. My biggest complaint is the cart paths, you may need a spinal adjustment after riding 18. We've played it enough to learn the rough spots. Great little course and staff is always kind. Go play it!
Try it at Tryon
Course layout varies enough to keep you interested. Fairways are some of the best I have played on. Greens for the most part are in excellent shape. Well worth the time.
Not much bang for the buck
This course used to be a hidden gem. It was a bit of a drive, but what you got for $29-$30 on a Saturday morning tee time was exceptional. Out of nowhere they started charging $40+ to play here. It's not worth driving almost 45 minutes outside of Greenville city limits to play this course for the same price as premier courses in the heart of Greenville.
The round - Course has true greens and the fairways are decent. Several holes feature bare spots and some eye sores, again, not what I'd want to pay $40 a round for. The pace of play was good, everybody was kind and willing to let others play through. The weather was great that day.
Staff - Very friendly. Minus one groundskeeper who thought he had a badge on. Apparently the 90 degree rule doesn't apply to the 11th hole. He followed us from 11-12th to make sure we were following his demands. Aside from this guy, everybody was top notch. Including the bar staff at the turn, very friendly and willing to help.
Overall - My group spends a good amount when we golf. We usually have drinks at the turn, and after the round. We certainly don't pinch pennys, but I can't get past spending $40 to drive so far out of the way. The course was priced perfectly at $30. I don't think I am coming back until they are able to come down to that price.....
Great Layout
The layout was great and the Pro Shop and Restaurant were very nice. The staff were friendly and helpful. We were there on a hot dry day for May, it was almost 90 degrees and the course was very hard and dry, the ball would bounce 20 feet in the air off the middle of the fairway. The greens were very dry and patchy and needed work, the putting was tough. But I like the layout, it had water in allot of places and the greens were hidden and sometimes sunken. It would play well for low scores for long hitters. Overall very nice but they need rain, we'll play there again even though its about an hour and 15 min drive.
Horrible experience all the way around.
There was a time when this was one of the premier public courses in the county, but those days have long past. They greens that they just installed a couple of years ago are half dead. The staff were nice enough, but the pace of play was absolutely atrocious. There is zero course etiquette, and zero enforcement of pace from the starter. After it taking over an hour to play three holes on the back, I just left. A three hour pace for nine holes is inexcusable, and I will not be making the effort to drive back out here. I'd rather overpay to play elsewhere.
a worthwhile experience
The Links suffered through some time of neglect but seems to be on the mend. The greens roll true though some are a little splotchy; the fairways are in good shape though some rain would help fill them out . Tee boxes are all right and there are sufficient choices so that you can choose a comfortable length to play. Not the least to recommend the Links is its location in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, which provide delightful eye candy as you enjoy the course. The friendly, accommodating staff and tasty snack bar contribute to a good day of golf.
They've lost their greens
I've played there for 25 years on a very irregular basis. Most of my play at Links was from '92 to 2000. It was one of my favorite courses in the whole county. They had the best greens around and the layout was great. Hadn't been there in the last several years and was really looking forward to it. It was sad - they've virtually lost several of their greens. Cart paths are in rough shape. Hope they get it back but not a very good course at moment.
First time not the Last time
I had just never played here & always wanted to. No one was one the course due to a HS Tournament finishing up. Very straightforward layout. No huge trouble. Very nicely kept. Greens had been freshly dressed with sand- so they were not at optimum conditions the day of my visit. I will be back soon to play again!!
Love this course!
Besides being a great value this course provides challenges and fair greens that make for a very enjoyable round of golf. I'd recommend this course to anyone who wants a great golf day.
