A course worth playing
Although not the most difficult course to play you can still get into trouble. It’s a mixture of both tough and easy holes. It’s had some bad reviews in the past but I say it’s worth playing. The greens and fairways were in good shape. Green speeds were moderate. Some tee boxes were in need of more grass but most were in good shape. Took three of us 3 hours and 40 minutes to play which is good speed. Staff was very friendly. Carts have the GPS system on them and were fairly new. Played on a Wednesday during the PGA at Kiawah
An unfair assessment
This course currently has a 2.2 star rating. I personally feel that this is wildly inaccurate. Course was in fair to good condition. The greens weren’t the fastest but the whole course was very playable and had quite a few fun golf holes. The par 5s were among my favorites. We were the first players out and played in under 3 hours (and I was walking). Don’t be afraid to give this course a shot. It is a fun test of golf.
Not a book for its cover
I don't normally write reviews but this one is probably warranted to give the people an idea of what they're getting in to. For a later day round at a course where you just want to hit some balls and have a few pops, this is probably not bad for that. But it's probably the only thing you'd want to get into there.
The range is right next to the 10th hole, which is a disaster if you can imagine that. People were firing into us while teeing off and even as we waited to hit our second shots into the green! The greens were in terrible shape, as it appears they have an infection of some sort. We were not warned about this, and me and my group ended up calling a 2-putt max rule into play for many of them. The rest of the layout is ok and the fairways were not terrible, but the course just appears to be a municipal that could use some TLC. Bunkers needed raking, tee boxes and greens needed mowing, etc. Until this place puts something into the greenery, I would not recommend this place.
Terrible greens
My group decided to play here because we hadn’t played it. The greens were in terrible shape. Patches fill with green sand on about a 30% of all the greens. So bad that after two holes we decided to have a two putt max., as if temporary greens. The tee boxes weren’t much better. It’s a shame because it’s an interesting layout and was probably nice at some point. I won’t be back!
What a value!
Shadowmoss was an awesome experience for me. Got a walk on tee time in early morning as a solo. Players had no problem letting me pass through, I wasn't waiting for any longer than 5 minutes to hit. Course was in phenomenal condition I was blown away considering how cheap the round was. Immaculate greens and a few challenging holes I would recommend this course to anyone. Friendly staff as well.
Awful
Today I went in at 2:30 to take my 4yr old to play for his first time. He was extremely excited as we have been practicing at home to play and watching on tv. We get there and Greg was behind the counter. That's where things went wrong. He told me he was completely booked up until 3:24 almost an hour from then knowing that I wouldn't wait with a 4yr old to play. I told my son we couldn't play today and he was disappointed. To do as most parents would do, I tried to make it better. I took him over to the putting green to practice. We were there until 3:50. In the 1:20 hours we were there, only 7 people started their rounds. (3) two and (1) solo. I went in afterwards when we were leaving to ask Greg why exactly we weren't allowed to tee off. His response was that he was busy and people don't want to play around kids because they want to have fun when they play. His words exactly. When I ask him what his name was because I wanted to file a complaint, he responded with "you can look at my nametag". Great job disappointing a 4yr old kid today Greg. I hope you feel like you are a true ambassador of the sport and representing your course the way it should be.

Avoid until the greens are repaired
This is a lovely course, well designed with many challenging holes and modest green fees. However, almost all of the greens have very large patches of dead grass and/or dirt, which make scoring well virtually impossible. It looks like a combination of the consequences of the winter weather and disease. The course needs to be closed and the greens completely overhauled before I would recommend that anyone play it.
Great Layout - fun course
This course has a challenging but fair layout, plenty of doglegs and water. Tee boxes could use some maturity. Early in the season so maintenance was minimal. Pro shop and club house friendly. Foursome played in 4 hours, needed to allow time due to not being familiar with the course. Would play again if in the area.
Hi walpole13,
We are so glad you came out and played the course. We love to hear that the course was challenging and fair.
We hope to see you back soon!

Good place to play.
This course is very close to my winter home and I play in two senior groups. The greens and fairways are in good condition, the tees have a lot of bare spots. The pro shop, restaurant and facilities are excellent and the staff is very friendly. Because it is in the "low country" the course stays wet for a while after rain. The course is a good value and fun to play.
Glad I played Here!!!
My family and I make the trip from Greeneville, TN to I.O.P. every year (22 yrs now). This was the first time playing Shadowmoss. I played last Monday (6/19) and had the first tee time. It was an excellent experience for me. Other than the tee boxes being a little rough, I loved the course. The fairways and greens are well taken care of. The staff is the friendliest group of people I have ever met at a golf course. Thanks so much!!!! I will be back!!!!
Hi glfoster,

Great choice for the budget-conscious
Shadowmoss is the epitome of a reliable neighborhood public track that caters to die-hard local golfers.
The clubhouse, while neither posh nor pretentious, offers all the amenities of a working man's country club. I arrived early for my 11:15 tee time and decided to get something to eat in the grill. I can safely say the $5.65 breakfast plate was the best breakfast I've had in a while.
The grill/bar area was alive and bustling every time I walked in. There was an energy that was infectious.
The practice range was a bit sketchy, almost as if it had been closed for repairs but people ignored it and hit out there anyway. The grass was knee-high in places and the yardage signs were leaning to one side or another. Very Stephen King-esque.
The course itself was pretty good. There were a few holes that seemed a bit awkward, but otherwise it was a pleasant round. The short par 4 finishing hole left me wanting something a bit more robust, as most players will hit iron off the tee to avoid the pond fronting the green. I must also say that many of the tee boxes had no grass, and in fact were unstable to the footing. I don't know if they were diseased or what happened, but they need to be completely re-sodded.
If I were a local I'd probably play this course frequently just to manage my budget, but it won't make my golf buddies trip list. It just doesn't have the quality or memorability.
Hi u569171624,

This club is wonderful
I play at 'The Moss' every week. The course is fun, conditions are good for the amount of play and cost, the men's group is fun, the staff is welcoming and enjoyable, and competition is available for all levels. I consider the Moss my second home.
Hi u6474208,

Nothing great
Course was in decent shape. Bunkers are inconsistent and greens were fair. The layout is mediocre and some holes are very narrow. Pace of play is typically slow. The range is in bad shape and the clubhouse needs to be renovated. There are much better courses in the area.
Decent
There are much nicer courses in the area however this one is decent. The yardage markers were not great and the traps were distressed but the greens were in fair shape.
Great greens
Overall a very nice course. Tees are a little rough on some holes but very nice otherwise. I had a great day.
Great Condition
Fourth time on this course. Best conditions I have ever seen. Fairways best shape of any course in the Low Country I have played in last six weeks (of course I only play public courses) Only criticism is that the senior tees are a bit neglected compared to the regular tees. Fun day and good test of golf for a bogey golfer.
Course has everything you want. Great featues
Doglegs left and right. Water that comes into play on numerous holes. Elevation on some of the greens. A very nice playable course from whatever tees you choose based on your handicap.
Quite a Surprise!
We have been to the Charleston area many times but never played Shadowmoss. This time we checked golfnow.com along with my son's recommendation, found this course, booked it, played it, and totally enjoyed it. We will definitely be returning and bringing friends since we only live in the North Myrtle Beach area and it's not a long trip. Lots of interesting holes, great conditions, great greens. We didn't eat there so I can't rate the food but everything else was excellent to us.
Kudos to Greg... News Flash: NOBODY... and I mean NOBODY... thinks it's appropriate for you to bring your 4 year old kid to a golf course.
