Northwoods Golf Course
About
Northwoods Golf Club is one of the Columbia area's premier public courses. P.B. Dye, son of renowned course architect Pete Dye, designed the layout, incorporating some of his father's signature features. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to any skill level but there are some challenges in store as well. Mature trees line most of the fairways and there are a few strategically placed bunkers that come into play. You won't come across much water on this golf course and it's not terribly long either. It's gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. The golf course's signature hole is the par-4 14th, which features the famous Dye railroad ties bordering a lake that hugs the bunkered green. Northwoods G.C. also offers a practice facility with a lighted driving range and putting green.

Decent but needs work
I had a 7 am tee time on a Sunday morning and when I showed up the place was empty and no one was there. I didn't end up getting off #1 until around 7:45. guy at the front desk was nice, and the practice was was in pretty good shape. There are many interesting holes, ex #2 100 par 3 from the blues, and generally speaking there are no two holes here that are the same. The front 9 was pretty well kept but the back 9 wasn't in nearly as good of shape. There's no reason that a tee box shouldn't be cut on a Sunday morning (par 3 #11). This place is either understaffed or just doesn't care, but it was pretty crowded when I left around noon. Some bunkers weren't raked and barely edged, and most bunkers had sand that was so hard they were unplayable. Pace of play was good, couple groups let us play through. Lots of cool holes, but could definitely be kept a lot better.
Good layout has potental
First time playing this course fairways need overseed and greens were slow. The course has a good layout and starter and ALL STAFF were friendly They even thank me for playing . Course could be a gem but needs work
great for tha money
great course even after all the rain the course played great good staff Order your food before you finish playing your game (phone in order from cell)
Great Track, Great Staff, Great Value!
From a beginner golfer to an expert player, The Spur at Northwoods has something for everyone. With new ownership and revitalized facilities, this Columbia staple stands on its own compared to all local daily fee courses. The greens and bunkers are first class, with the fairways and rough in decent shape considering the amount of rain endured. The quality of The Spur remains steadily on the rise. Looking forward to many rounds here this golf season!
Amazing for the Money
This is a great course. The layout is good and there is plenty of room to be a little wild off the tee. For the price, you can't beat it.
Awsome course
One of the best layouts in South Carolina. Would recommend to a friend.
Great course great price
First time playing and found the course to be challenging and in great shape. Course was still wet from all the rain but otherwise in real good shape. Employees were very friendly and accommodating.
course conditions
The course was very wet as a result it did not play well. Really need to plat again when it is drier.
if you want to practice come play the Northwoods
Fairways are in ok conditions, greens are definetely better than when previous management, impress with bunkers having real sand for a change but all around is in serious need of a total makeover, bare spots are visible all around the fairways, cart paths are in very bad shape but if you feel like fining and tuning your swing come play it, not bad at all.
see ya
Staff is very unfriendly. A smile or how are you, would be nice.
Great shape
Play here 4-5 times a year, best shape it's been in years...great course for the $ Hats off to the staff here
Complete overhaul
They are doing a tremendous job getting this course back up to speed. It is in great condition! Someone was working on every hole, bunkers, cutting the rough, working on greens, ust overall in great shape! Their doing a wonderful job with bringing this course back around. If you haven't played here in awhile you will be pleasantly surprised with the conditions!
Great Course
The fairways and greens were very challenging. A wide open fairway would have a few hills and maybe a sandbox or two. And the green didn't read like you thought. Instead of left it really was right. A fairway that look like you could drive it, was longer than first thought. Great course for any level of play. Also going out of bounds or the second cut can make this one even more challenging.
Overall review of improvements
Course has improved a lot in the 6 month to a year they are still working on some sand traps and some greens but still very playable
Thank you for the improvements!
Northwoods is on the way back! The improvements at this course are making a difference. On a Friday morning in August, there were 10-15 workers mowing, rebuilding bunkers, sodding greens, and taking care of the overall appearance. Thanks.
The course is interesting
The course is the best value in the midlands. The Spur has some very interesting holes. The back 9 is especially nice.
Review
The course has come a long way in the last year. One of my favorites because close to downtown.
Even Better
Course continues to improve. Fairways are excellent, rough is good. Bunkers, while some are still being reworked, are excellent. Greens were a bit slow, but they are trying to get them to really come in, which has been no easy task. Overall, this is a great value, and gets better each time we play.
Course is coming around
Played the course for the first time in several years. When I played this course the last time I said to myself I would not play here anymore but major changes have take place and the course is actually in good shape. Greens and bunkers have been reworked, both are in good shape. The fairways are also in good shape.
