Can't sweat the small stuff
Okay the 1st tee box is next to the pro shop, if you hook one your going through a window. The tee box grass is tall, almost rough. The fairways are no different, cut a inch shorter then the rough. The greens are awful good luck dodging all the divots, just messy overall. The fairways people have driven all over, they look bad, no one fills their divots. If you hate being near the road, dont go here. The course however does have potential, but the way it is treated, by the staff and players, almost makes it unplayable. This is a great golf course for a person who just wants to play, someone that doesn't care about yardage markers/ball cleaners/hole identification. There are a few risk-reward holes that are possible for any skill level. But if you are going to spend 25 bucks to play here why not drop 30 and go to Boscebel?Heddles? Hejaz? Not worth the money here guys.
This course is much improved since the last time I played it.
The last time played Pickens country club was late spring 2011 and I said then as walked to my truck "I will not ever play here again until they make some dramatic improvements to the condition of the course". So about a month ago I was in the area and pulled into the parking lot and walked to 2 of the closest greens and was pleased with what I saw. So I told my golf buddy we should go back and try it since its so close to home. In spring of 2011 the greens were in terrible condition and the tee boxes were lacking any good grass to hit from. The course still needs some repair in some areas such as cart path and a few of the tee boxes but the maintenance crew seem to care about what the place looks like now. For the $30 I payed to play a mid morning tee time was a decent value. The greens looked great but there is lots of room for improvement throughout the course. I will be back to play there unless they let it get run down again.
Friendly staff, a great place for the casual golfer. Elite players will not enjoy this experience but if you are north of 90 you will fit right in.
Fast greens; short course with no major hazards or difficult shots.
Player friendly.
Good, older golf course (built in 1958) normally kept in good condition. Greens are bent and typically fairly fast. This past summer keeping the greens in good shape was challenging due to high heat and opressive humidity, but they remained playable.
Older but good grounds maintenance
This is an older course with poor facilities and buildings but the course is usually maintained well. A few greens had issues when I was there, but it appeared to be being addressed.
