Course was in good shape. Spent front nine playing behind a sixsome with three adults and three children . Pace of play got backed up b/c of it.
THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN IT!!!
If you haven’t played here in a while you need to go. I have never seen it look better. The greens are as good as any in Knoxville. The fairways and tee boxes look great. They repaved the cart paths a couple of years ago and there in great shape. Rusty (course manager) and the new grounds keeper are doing a wonderful job. Keep up the good work guys. If you have not played here lately, then give them a try. You won’t be disappointed.
Big Boy Grass
the course has grass everywhere now. if you havent been in a while come on out. very well manicured. i played on 07/31/2016. no complaints
This course has gotten better
Impressed with improvements made with the fairways & the greens. The course was beautiful on 6/10/16
Pace terrible
Went on the day that they have a low ball tournament. I did not know that on Tuesdays they have about 35 golfers playing a low ball tournament. The course says they don't allow fivesomes however there was about four groups that had five in them. We were never told that it would be slow today or that there was even a tournament going on. Playing as a group of two we were playing much faster the the group of five in front of us however we were never given the chance to play through. On hole 10 the group jumped in front of us
No longer playable
A very nice layout that I have enjoyed playing for the last several years. Fairly short but with enough hills and slopes to be challenging. Greens in very good condition for this time of year, although a couple are too fast and the ball will just keep rolling downhill and right off the green. Staff is always friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately, there is virtually no grass on the fairways and tees. I understand the grass may not have started growing yet this spring, but there is not even dormant grass under your ball anywhere on the fairways. You're playing off the mud all day. If your ball starts rolling down a hill, you may never see it again. So many areas are completely bare that I don't see any way they could possibly fill in when the grass does start growing. As is, the course shouldn't even be open.
Unhappy
Was treated rudely when there was a discrepancie with the golfnow booking ... there was no grass on course , mostly mud / dirt ... bathrooms were un-maintained ... 2 many ppl bunched up hitting toward each other .... overall very displeased !
What A Surprize
I have played Whittle very infrequently the past 30 years. Maybe once every couple of years. It's an old muni that is short with not much trouble. Only played here at last second due to rate. For those who haven't played here recently the greens were in really really good shape They were plush, smooth and had no Po in them. Fairways and tee boxes were good. You still have to deal with groups of 5 and ducking from wayward shots.
Thank you for your comments. We have invested a lot into the golf course over the last 12-16 months. We have new cart paths, new champion bermuda greens, as well as redoing several tee boxes and fairways with 419 bermuda. We are constantly working to improve customer experience which includes pace of play and set up.
Don't play
We were placed behind a tournament on the front nine with 4 groups of 5 in front of us. It took 1.5 hours to play 4 holes. We asked to play thru, but, were told NO. We asked the ranger if we could move to the back nine, but, were told they were playing soccer golf on the back. If they are running two events like this at the same time they should not be selling tee times. We left after 4 holes. I will NEVER play this course again. I have never seen a course so poorly managed.
We apologize for your poor experience. We are constantly looking at ways to increase pace of play and overall customer experience. In the past 12-14 months we have new Champion Bermuda greens, brand new cart paths and redone multiple fairways and tee boxes to increase the quality of the golf course. We currently only offer footgolf on Wednesday and Sunday after 3pm. We have found that the sport is a great way to introduce new players to the game of golf and get the youth of Knoxville out and active at the City golf course.
Very over booked
$15 should be a great deal to play 18 holes. But when there is 5 groups in front of you and more behind you, it's hard to really try and have a good game. Constantly waiting, pace of play is really slow. Greens had been aereated, so the greens weren't in the best of shape. I'm scheduled to play on a tournament there in a few weeks and wanted to play the course a couple times before then, but I think I'm just gonna wait cause its too crowded for a regular round. Not enough parking. Parking lot is awful condition.
Under renovations
Some repair/renovation work in progress made the. Course a little gnarly
need to close until repairs are done
Course was undergoing major renovation. Some holes were closed, but more should have been. Most fairways were extremely muddy. It was cart path only.
We have just redone all of our cart paths and we have also sprigged several fairways with 419 bermuda grass. We did this on May 28th. We have to keep those areas extremely wet for the first couple of weeks of planting. The course conditions are improving daily and we are doing everything we can to provide the best possible playing conditions now and for the future of the golf course.
Mud Hole Mayhem
This was my second time playing the course because I thought I should give it another chance. Boy was I wrong. Made my reservation online and eagerly showed up to the course the next day. I arrive to find out that 4 HOLES ARE CLOSED that day. Nothing was posted about hole closures. I know they were working on the cart paths, but I had been told by another golfer that they had finished them up. The course is still in complete disarray with mud everywhere. Several of the Tee boxes looked almost looked like a sand bunker. Not a blade of grass in sight. The regular daily tournament goers do not respect other new golfers to the course. On top of all of that, the poorly executed parking area resulted in another one of the daily tournament guys running into my car with a golf cart as I tried to leave. I...will.....never....return.
You should have been informed about hole closures prior to booking and checking in at the pro shop. We will check into this and make sure it does not happen again to anyone. We are still working on the cart paths. The golfer you spoke with was incorrect of his assessment. They are done with the majority of paving but have sod work left to do around the trails. That is one of the main reasons it was muddy. Once the sod is laid on the areas that topsoil has been put down we expect the mud problem to go away. We are also replacing several tee boxes while they are still working on the cart trails. I understand your concerns and would like for you to take another look at the course once we have finished up the construction.
14 holes of golf..
A friend and I purchased a round of golf here for today. There were no indications of hole closings or bad conditions. Four holes were closed. We got a decent deal at 15$ plus taxes and fees, but they shouldve had an asterisk next to all tee times today. Almost all of the tee boxes were in terrible shape along with most of the fairways. One good thing I can say is that the greens are coming in nicely.
You should have been informed of the hole closures and course conditions at booking and at check in. We will look into the issue and make sure it does not happen in the future. We are currently still finishing up work on the cart paths. Most of the paving is done but we still have sod to lay. While we are finishing up the cart trails we are also replacing turf on several of the tee boxes. We will also be sprigging several fairways starting the week of May 25th. We apologize for your poor experience and would like for you to give us another look.
WS Golf
Good thing - New Cart paths
Bad things - the construction stuff everywhere.
Some Fairways are dead grass.
Greens are in Average condition.
Glad they are fixin it up. I'd wait to play it again.
Thank you for your comments. We are very pleased with how the cart paths are turning out. We are finishing up the backfilling of dirt this week and we should be sodding the disturbed areas next week. After that we should be finished with the cart trails other than the sod being grown in around the trails. We will also be sodding several fairways in certain spots in the coming weeks. The harsh winter has caused the bermuda fairways to be slow to come in this year. They have shown improvement since the weather has warmed up this past week and a half but we are going to be proactive and replace certain areas to provide the best playing surface possible as quickly as possible. We aerified our new champion bermuda greens the first week of May and we are doing some minor repair work on a couple of holes this week. They will be better than ever moving forward. You can follow weekly updates of our progress at www.golfwhittlesprings.com
greens were in perfect condition
The cart paths are under construction, but it does not affect play at all, and they have the rate super cheap due to the construction. Greens were excellent! Play a lot for cheap while it lasts!
My first time playing but not my last.
This is a nice course and an excellent value. Loved the layout of the course. Very friendly staff.
Guys with Jeans Play Here
If your are a average or better golfer then stay away. Several players with jeans on, several teams with 5 players and so slow we didn't finish our round, instead we left. Last time I'll play the course.
Nice
I think the staff was nice and friendly, the greens are excellent every last one of them. I will say some of the rough.....WAS WAY ROUGH and not giving in the least, other than that I loved it and will be back more.
Thank you for your comments. We always appreciate the feedback from our customers. Our fairways and tees have not come out of dormancy yet. They are getting better each day. We are positive they will be the best they have ever been this season. We sprigged and sodded most of our fairways in 2015, as well as putting in a fertilization and weed prevention program that will positively effect our course conditions.
