Quaint Local Club - Good Value
Nice old course with a distinctly local feel. Lots of local senior men frequent this course. Not fancy, but honest, very reasonable fees, gas carts, friendly vibe. Kitchen made fresh hot breakfast, the woman running the kitchen could not have been sweeter! The green keeping staff has focused on the greens and they were in great shape considering the recent hot, dry conditions. Kudos to the superintendent! Slowish but consistent and green. No sand on this course - all greenside bunkers have been converted to grass bunkers.beautiful views, Back nine is tighter and harder than the front.
Fun, challenging, & friendly staff
The staff was very friendly and it was a painless experience checking in. It was a challenging course with lots of slopes and is very fun for someone around a 20 handicap or less. My only comment as far as layout would be the course has some tight fairways on some of the holes. Golfers who pull or push far left/right run the risk of landing directly on another fairway very easily or putting the ball directly into play with golfers next to you. Not the most forgiving choice of course for new players. Very scenic course and would recommend for intermediate golfers. I would rate this course 8.5/10 and would recommend for anyone in the area looking for a scenic and challenging course. Very fair prices for food/beverage in the pro shop for those interested.
First time playing this course
Looking for a fun and challenging mountain course this is it. ESP back 9 lots of hills and slopes with large sloping greens. Would definitely recommend
Everything’s slowly getting better
I’d give this course a 3.5 rating currently. Fairways are starting to look good again. My main complaint is how slow the greens are. Also had a twosome come from 18 as I pulled up to hole one and teed off again as I was getting my driver. Wasn’t in a rush so I didn’t care as much, but still annoying to have to wait after warming up
Billy goat golf
Lots of hills, tight, fair greens and fairways. It’s an alright place, I do not recommend walking.
Great staff
The staff was very friendly. We were told that the course has only been open a month since last year’s hurricane. Knowing that, helped us understand that the conditions weren’t perfect but in good enough to enjoy the round of golf.
Beautiful views of the Smokey’s. Some holes have some steep uphill greens.
Little dated but great fun
Clubhouse and carts a little dated. Seeing cobwebs on the carts was odd, but that may be normal?... I'm from AZ. Pace of play was off due to groups in front of us. Guessing ready golf maybe not the norm, but both groups were supernice, if not a bit clueless.
Staff was epic. Super welcoming. Gave me few tips. Back 9 is narrower than the front so shot placement more important. Tons of blind shots up and over hills. Elevated greens and tee boxes galore. Some drivable par 4s for the longer hitters. #10 opens to an amazing valley shot from elevated tee. #13?....Par 5, blind opening shot down a narrow corridor over a hill into a valley, leading to an elevated green.
Great Smoky Golf
Played early in the morning on a nice but warm Tuesday in August. Apparently this course has been the semi private muni in Newport for decades, changing ownership groups a few times recently and actually closing in January. We were camping near Gatlinburg and saw a very reasonable senior rate so decided to go up and give it a try,not knowing that it had only just reopened about a month ago. It was so pretty from the clubhouse we booked a second round for Thursday. There were many workers on course, and it was in great shape. The greens rolled nicely and the fairways were well defined, with a rough cut that favored accuracy. The monstrous elevation changes and some narrow chutes through wooded hills were a treat for this Florida golfer, but probably not for my score. Everyone there was friendly and I hope they have a good run, because it felt like a special place( make sure to avoid the old cemetery on the dog leg 4th!)
The course was not in very good condition. The layout was difficult to follow. It certainly didn’t live up to the rating on Golfnow. We did not enjoy it at all and only played 9 holes. I feel it was a waste of money
Great place!
Had a great experience! Great round with minimal traffic of play. Awesome staff and excellent value.
Glad it's back
The course could use a facelift, but the bones are still great. Always a fun course to play and in pretty good shape for the circumstances.
Hidden gem
For a course that was closed as long as it was I was blown away by the condition it was in. The greens were amazing, especially for a summer round. The rough was thick, but more than playable. Beautiful scenery, and the elevation changes on the holes offers a challenge that is rare on most public courses. If you are looking for a unique golf experience that will challenge you this course is perfect for you. What it lacks in hazards it more than makes up for with the layout. Excellent variety of long par 3s and short par 4s and challenging par 5s. If you are on vacation in the area or live anywhere in East Tennessee make the drive and play this course, you will not regret it!
Coming alonng
The conditions are improving. More attention needs to be paid to women golfers. Wife golfs nearly every round with me. The women's tee boxes are sometimes in the rough sometimes on side of hills. Most were not mowed.
Not bad, not great
Played this course over the weekend when it was 92 & humid - course was alright, greens on many of the holes were sketchy with grass missing and divots in them. Plenty of elevated greens - take one club more than you think on most of your approaches to greens. Course is more open on front side - back 9 will eat you up if you can't hit fairways to save your life.
No trashcans anywhere to be found, limited food/drink options at clubhouse, but the staff was extremely friendly.
