Pleasant Valley Golf Club
About
Pleasant Valley Golf Club sits just south of Dulles airport, but the expansive layout, which is absent of homes, feels much more secluded. The parkland layout tumbles across a diverse landscape of rolling hills and grassy meadows covered with hardwood forests. There is plenty of diversity throughout the golf course with some holes that are bunker-less contrasting with the links holes that have Scottish-style bunkers. One of the most memorable holes is the par-5 fifth. After an uphill tee shot with a bunker on the right and a waste area on the left the second shot presents multiple choices. To the left you could take a risk with trees and a bunker but you could possibly be rewarded with a better angle for the third shot while the right side option will require a third shot over a large bunker to reach the green.

Not the Great Course I Remember
I used to live in Northern Virginia and had played this course several times and had fond memories of it. But on my most recent visit I discovered the course had become like too many other courses in the area: slow, worn down, and not a good value.
The layout remains decent here, although not as dynamic as I remember it. There are a few memorable holes but not much wow factor like you get at places like Raspberry Falls, Stonewall, or even Westfields. Those other course are more expensive but not by a lot.
I was thankful to get a good GolfNow Hot Deal and only paid $30 which is good because I would have been very disappointed had I paid full price. Play was pretty slow and crowded but my main complaint was the course conditions. On many of the tee boxes it was difficult to find a place to tee it up due to either dry spots or crabgrass. The crabgrass intrusion remained a theme on much of the course which is a shame. The greens are decent enough but did show a lot of use.
The staff is pretty friendly, especially the starter Joe, but there was no beverage cart to be seen and it was a hot day. For the rack price of the greens fees and with so many other courses nearby, I wouldn’t recommend Pleasant Valley right now until conditions improve.
Bad course conditions
I've been playing this course for 20 years and the course condition has dramatically worsened, especially in the last year. Fringes are made up of weeds making them impossible to putt, many greens are scarred, tee boxes are poor, and fairways are marginal. To make it worse some of the greens are very bouncy and others grab the ball immediately. It's a shame because I love the layout but until they get their act together I will not be back.
We appreciate you choosing Pleasant Valley for the past 20 years. This year in particular has had some very challenging weather issues compounding by our well (irrigation system) going down. The tee boxes will be back soon to a better condition and the greens are in great shape. Hopefully you'll give us another shot in a few weeks.
Out of state vistor
Great course layout, I played as a single but the only downfall were the blue tee boxes were in bad shape.
Thank you for your review and we are certainly working on the tee boxes! Please come see us again if you're back in the area - contact jfulton@wingfieldproperties.com if you're back in the area.
Needs some tender love
Course layout is fantastic and would classify this as a pastor course. Checked rates online before booking and noticed the hot deal of 50 bucks was a steal for a $70 weekday rate. However the driving range needs new mats they are like shredded belts on your car because you are essentially hitting off rubber. Carts are great with personalized club and ball cleaners on every cart. However they need to deweed the teebookes and get some updated irrigation for the dry spells. All in all I think if they dropped the price they would get more business and be able to put the money back into the course.
Tyler,
Thank you for playing Pleasant Valley and your feedback. We will hopefully be getting new driving range mats this fall as they are certainly on their last leg. Our tee boxes are not in the best shape and we are currently working hard on getting them back. Hopefully you give us another shot in the fall and see the changes.
Course Conditions
The course was in good condition, but not excellent. Prolonged rainy weather may have made it difficult for the maintenance crew to keep the grass cut. The rough was a bit too long and difficult for the average golfer to negotiate. Cart path could use some repair also.
Your review is spot on and we have now gotten all caught up on the rough. Cart paths are on the list to get done now that our bunker project is finished. Thank you for your review.
Slow and slower
The course was in pretty decent shape but still wet from recent rains. Lots of unrepaired divots in the fairways and greens were just OK. There were four or five holes where the golfers in front of you could be out of sight over the hill but still in range from the tee box. Pace of play was really slow (+ 5 hours). Maybe I just went on a bad day but they seem to have a reputation for slow play.
Thank you for your feedback and we appreciate you choosing our course to play. The course has certainly dried out now after this stretch of heat. Pace of play is one of our main focuses and I'm sorry you experienced such a slow day! We hope your next visit is much more pleasant. Please let us know any other way we can improve by emailing jfulton@wingfieldproperties.com. Thank you
Great public course, one of my favorites in the area. The course has a challenging layout making it a great course for mid to low handicap golfers but is not too dificult for lower level golfers. The front 9 tee boxes could use some work but other than that the course was in great shape.
Thank you for your feedback and review!
Decent layout, good greens, bit overpriced
No frills track that is mostly right in front of you and scorable. Main issue is the tee boxes are dreadful. Most are uneven with shaggy grass if you can find any among the sand holes. I suspect most players here are ‘members’ or get some county discount to make it more affordable, because for $88 on the weekend there are definitely better tracks nearby. Layout is decent mix of shot making and length and greens rolled nicely even for all the recent rain.
Great Course but THE ROUGH
First time playing and I really like the course and will be back. All the rain in the recent weeks has made the rough extremely penal. Stay in the short grass. Apparently the traps are getting new sand but they seem to be in that condition - piles of sand in the trap - for some time. Ought to get fixed, or is that rain-related?
Didn't quite meet expectations
Pleasant Valley is usually one of the better public courses in the Northern Virginia area. However, for our round on Saturday, 6/9, it did not meet expectations. To be fair, we've have a ton of rain in the NoVA area and I am sure that negatively impacted course conditions. The rough was extremely long and hadn't been cut and made finding balls tough. Greens were not in good condition. All sand traps had large mounds of new sand. Given we're well into the season, we all expected to be playing a better course. Even with a hotdeal of $71 for the round, the course just wasn't worth it this time around.
Thank you for your feedback and review and we apologize for not meeting expectations. The rain has drastically impacted our course conditions this spring! The sand traps will be smoothed out within the next week or so as we need the rough to dry out so that we can get equipment out on the course. Hopefully later in the season you'll find conditions back up to par.

Beware of the Rough
Course was in great shape when I played. The rough is thick, which makes the course a good challenge. Try to keep it in the fairways as much as possible...still shot a 91!
Thank you for the review!
Hoping for more fairways in your future!

course conditions suboptimal
This course suits my game well but the recent weather has taken a big toll - rough around the fairways was only mown on a few holes, making it near impossible to find balls on a cloudy day. The worst was the sand bunkers though - many had high piles of sand in them that had not yet been spread out. Those without the piles had been washed out so completely there were rocks. Fairways and greens were in great shape though.
Thank you for your review and feedback! You are certainly correct that the rains in May and early June have made the rough very tough to keep up with. We are doing our best to get as many areas mowed as frequently as possible. As for the bunkers, the new sand will be smoothed out within the next week or so dependent upon the weather.

Bumpy cart path
Fairway and green are kept fine, but the cart path should have been paved to avoid a bumpy run.
Thank you for the feedback and review! We do have many spots on the cart path that need repair and it is on our list. We need some dry days so the puddles go away and we will be filling those holes.

Doesn’t worth the money
The fairway the bunkers and the carts are in poor conditions . No ball washers at any hole through out the course . I believe they charge too much loft spoor management.
We appreciate your review and feedback from your most recent round. We are sorry that you didn't find conditions up to standards. We are in the middle of a full bunker renovation as I'm sure you saw with about 6 holes done. In a few weeks, the bunkers will be back to perfect as well as the rest of the course.
Good course
Interesting layout. Course was in good condition for early Spring. A little bit of everything. Some short but interesting par 4's, split fairways and water hazards made for a fun day. Challenging, but not to the point of being overly difficult.
Ben,
We are glad you got a deal and chose Pleasant Valley when you were back in town and we appreciate all of your comments. The tee boxes have certainly taken a beating this year and we are doing everything we can to get them back in better shape. Hopefully the next time you visit, you'll enjoy the course conditions more.
