Great course
This course is in my too 3 most favorite courses in greater Washington. The course staff and quality of the green is amazing
Dissapointed
This is one of my favorite layouts in the area. It has always been what I feel all clubs should be. They treat you like a member and are always professional. The fee also includes range balls which is a big plus.
The course, however, is in horrible condition. The tee boxes and fairways are being destroyed by some kind of fungus and the greens are not much better. They say it is because of the weather, but how can a course two miles away be in so much better shape?
I think they need help on course management. It was the same last year too. Even with a discount it is not worth it.
Westfields
Love the layout of this course. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.
Two things knocked my rating down to a 4 instead of a 5. The greens were in horrible shape. Very wet and torn up. Also, we started at 4:00, and there was a league that started at 5:00. They started the league by shotgunning them on the first 5 holes. All of the sudden we had 2 group of 4 playing in front of us playing very slow. We finished the round, but it was pretty frustrating.
Great course, can be difficult if you dont know it
Definitely a great course that has its challenges. The course was a bit wet when I played but still played well. There are a number of holes that were cart path only in addition to the normal par 3s.
Nice course, good shape
I like this course, mostly challenging on the front by sand and not water = fewer lost golf balls, except for #3 a long par 3 mostly over water depending on pin position. A little too much draw and plop. Good value - cheaper here on golfnow vs their own website.
Like 3-putting?
Do you like 3-putting? Then this is the course for you.
Seriously, if you enjoy multi-tiered, elevated green complexes, defended by artificial mounds and bunkers, then give this course a chance. It certainly is in good shape, and the routing (although clearly lacking space; back-to-back par 4s under 300 yards on the back 9? kind of silly, no?) was interesting enough.
To me, this course is typical of the nadir of course design (mid 90s to mid 00s) where developers lost the plot... Sadly, a lot of N. VA courses fit into this category.
If you're looking for a course in the area, I actually prefer the Fairfax County courses at Twin Lakes. True, they're not as well maintained, but you'll save money and likely will walk away feeling a bit better about your game.
Fred Couple course
I only play this course when I find deals because their rates are usually high. It's been a year since I last played here and the course is in a similar condition. It's a not bad course, however, they need to pay attention to their greens and keep it in a better condition considering how much they charge their customers. I don't ever recall when the Westfield'd greens being in a 'outstanding condition'. I've played other courses nearby such as Laurel Hill golf course which is a county owned course and their greens are Far Lot Better than the Westfield's .. All Year round! .. I'll wait and see (& if the special deal comes up again) and check out Westfields course again later this year. Hopefully by then I have better things to report back about Westfield's Greens!
Enjoyable walk in the park
Westfields is a great track and a forgiving golf course. The holes have individual personalities with varied looks that don't require trick approaches and there are no blind shots. The greens had been aerated and were very wet and soft which made putting a bit more challenging.
Very Good, Tough Course with Great Service
First off, a heads-up to anyone planning on playing within a week of this review: the greens at Westfields are currently being aerated. I didn't find it to be a big issue, the ball still rolled smoothly, but just something to keep in mind.
As has been mentioned in many of these reviews (but worth reinforcing) the service at Westfields is top-notch. There's something about being greeted from the moment you step out of your car and walking up to the clubhouse free of the burden of carrying your clubs that makes you fee like a pro (or a millionaire). The pre-round course overview the starter gives you is very helpful, as are the course marshals who actually tell you exactly what your pace is and if you need to speed it up. I played as part of a slow foursome and the marshal kindly asked us to let the threesome behind us go ahead at the next hole. If you're part of that threesome, it's certainly something you appreciate.
Everything from the clubhouse amenities (full-service locker room instead of just a restroom) to the practice facilities are all what you'd expect from only the top-tier of courses in the area (ok, a practice bunker like the one at Stonewall would be nice, but I'm nit-picking).
So why only the four stars? Well, if I could give it 4.5 stars I would because my only complain is I found this course to be HARD. Certainly neither the tee boxes nor the fairways are to blame; I've never seen such wide tees in my life, you have 25+ feet of width on every box from which to choose your angle and while the fairways are sometimes narrow, there are plenty that are wide enough to receive less-than-straight tee shots, and there is only one blind tee shot on the course.
No, the difficulty in this course lies in the greens and what surrounds them. Every one is guarded well by deep bunkers, steep slopes, trees, and occasionally water. If you are lucky enough to find yourself on the green in 2, par is far from a guarantee as the greens are very undulating and even 4-ft putts will make you sweat. The speed is not as fast as you'd expect given the quality of this course (the aeration may have been a factor here) and as such, judging the speed in combination with the break make lag putts an ordeal. On top of that, I had more than a fair share of lip-outs during my round...maybe it was just bad luck for me.
The staff and ambiance at Westfields make you feel like you're on the PGA Tour, but if you don't come with your best game ready, prepared to be humbled! Getting a good GolfNow deal here will make any round worth it, I think I would have walked away much less pleased if I had paid full-price.
Great layout
Great layout. They work hard at maintenance. The only problem is that too many players here do not repair ballmarks leaving the greens cut up. It is a shame. I also find the sand in the bunkers to be too compacted making them overly difficult to play. Nonetheless in my opion it is in the top 3 public courses in NOVA for layout and conditioning with Stonewall, and Raspberry Falls.
Excellent course. Great service.
First time playing Westfield and it was an entertaining course. Great staff, great practice facility. Only issue I had was with the greens. For such a nice course I would think the greens would be maintained a little better. There were three putts that were strongly affected by this.
Nevertheless, great course. Enjoyed it. Will play again.
Great Course
The whole Westfield Staff are great. The tee times are extremely well managed. You dont have to wait on any shot which i largely attribute to the spacings of the groups going out. The tee boxes & fairways were in fantastic shape. I could not say the same for the greens which were showing patches of brown in addition almost all the greens had been punched which made putting tough. I have seen the greens in immaculate shape before. So that was the only sore point. Other than that its a good testing course. If you are in the fairway its a round you will remember. If not you will have this course as the rough is ROUGH! But all in all great course.
This course is in great shape
This is the best public golf course in the MD and VA area.
Nice course and good value with GolfNow
July afternoon and found a hot deal on GolfNow so decided to get it and head on out and man, was it hot out...
The staff was friendly and the course was in relatively good condition. They had an event in the morning so the greens were a little banged up from the recent heavy foot traffic I assume, but was still decent to putt on and the course was in good condition.
Would definitely play there again and actually have a tee time set up next week.
Enjoyable Time
Westfields is a Fred Couples signature course and well cared for with excellent and friendly staff. When I have matched up with people there, I have always had an enjoyable time. It tends to attract people with a positive attitude.
Good course.
Good all around challenging course layout and great shape. Not much WOW factor. Greens were in great shape. Very hot and humid in this area so be prepared.
Great course with excellent service.
The course was in great shape and the staff was the friendliest I've ran into. Plus, I got a great deal from golfnow at more than half the regular price. Their regular price is a little steep but that is a price you pay to be treated like you are at a country club.
Soggy turf with cart path only play
This is a nice course set in a natural setting with plenty of wildlife. Unfortunately, the day before we played the course had huge thunderstorms and lots of rain. For most courses this would not be a problem the following day but this course does not drain well. Even though the weather conditions were hot and dry on our golf outing, the course was extremely wet and bunkers were in terrible condition (washed out and/or pools of water). Another disappointment were the greens. Normally, these bent grass greens are a treat! However, the wet conditions contributed to excessive spike marks and had excessive ball marks so it was impossible to get good rolls to the cup. Overall, disappointing since this is such a pretty course under the right conditions.
Good layout
Overall condition was good ++ and has a old time type of layout with tree lined fairways with well protected greens.
Great Golf Experience
Westfields is one of the better managed golf courses locally. The course is in great shape and well maintained. We played as a twosome. Two groups let us play through and we made it around the track in 3 hours flat. Happy to recommend golfing here.
