The Gauntlet Golf Club
About
The Gauntlet is situated along the banks of the lake that is the centerpiece of Curtis Memorial Park. When it first opened in 1995, Golf Digest recognized it as one of the "top ten new courses to play in the U.S." This challenging layout will definitely test your shot making abilities. The golf course begins with a tough front nine that has several sharp doglegs over water and tall grasses. There are also a slew of blind shots. The back nine is a bit gentler since there's less water and it is more open and forgiving, but the large, multi-tiered greens can be tricky. The fourth hole is the golf course's signature. Your tee shot will have to carry a marsh to a narrow landing area on this par 5. After that, you'll be faced with a triple-tiered green with the lake to the left and bunkers to the right.

Very challenging
This course kicked my butt.
Will be back after practice.
Challenging Layout
The Gauntlet is a fun but tough course. You have to think on every hole from green to tee to set up your best opportunity to score well.
Unfortunately, the greens were in rough shape as they are being aerated and the tee boxes needed some serious TLC
I would like to play the course again with the greens in better condition. I hope they are able to provide some better experience for players in the future with the work they are doing.
Beginner course.
Greens looked dry, but still pretty slow. Staff was very nice. Look before you leap on a couple holes, blind hills.
Play it at least once...then take your friends (money)
The Gauntlet is a fun golf course if you like Dye designs and being forced to hit different shots all day. Despite my review below of the conditions - I honestly had a good time overall thanks to the combination of layout and not being busy in the slightest. The only issue I had was that they still charge you for a round of golf based on the fact of its proximity to the NCR and it being a Dye design. The overall conditioning of the course (except for the green surfaces which were pretty good) was lacking. We played on a Saturday in the middle of the day and the course was basically empty. Management either needs to lower the cost to get more people on the course again or bring it back to its level when it opened. Start with the driving range - which looks like an afterthought and a place where they just use found and lost golf balls to fill the hopper. From previous reviews, it looks like it is coming back - but it truthfully has a good ways to go, a golf course is more than just tees and greens. The green surrounds are very tired and in need of TLC. For a guy like me who relies heavily on short game skill to make good scores, it is challenging when the area immediately around a green is bare or not taken care of. I just need to get better I guess. Fairways were a mixed bag based on the location on the course and how much overall shade they received during the day - some were thin and damp, some were lush carpets. I would certainly go back, but maybe in the fall after the brutal summer temps have stopped creating havoc for the superintendent.
Course is coming back!
The Gauntlet remains one of my favorite
courses to play. It is challenging but fun.
If you are playing well, you can make birdies.
If not, prepare to write down a few doubles
and triples. The course was in pretty rough
shape a couple of years ago, but it is back
to being one of the best in the area.
Solid Track
Just moved to northern Virginia from Phoenix so I’m getting the lay of the land for courses around here.
Pros: cool layout, a lot of elevation changes, has the Pete Dye “style” around the course with random undulations. Target holes no matter the tee boxes so it forces you to use your whole bag which I like. The staff was over the top friendly and gave a lot of advice for the course as well as easy ways to get there (it’s around Fredericksburg, VA but very secluded). It rolls around a lake which gives it the course very scenic views.
Cons: tee boxes were in rough shape (not the end of the world) but the par three tee boxes were all more than adequate. Greens were slow and had some diseased area, it did just dump a ton of rain the day before (the fairways were actually pretty dry all things considered). Other than that really nothing to complain about.
All in all a very nice course, very scenic, great staff. Tight tee shots so hit it straight! Will be back for sure.
Still a Challenge
The course is getting back into shape after some rough seasons with damaged greens. The course presents a challenge unlike many courses in the area. You have to know where to miss on this course.
I did notice that some areas of high, thick weeds were cut down giving the golfer a chance to find an errant shot that were not available in the past.
My only complaint is the lack of a walking rate. This course is excellent to walk using a pull cart.
Beautiful course well groomed
Had a great first visit to this course. Was looking for something different. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Impressed with the fairways manicured as well as the greens Challenging course, fun time.
Nice surprise
I played this course earlier this year and the greens were still recovering from last year's issues. It was a nice surprise to see the greens are recovering nicely, the fairways were in excellent condition, and staff could not have been nicer.
A visible change
This course has been I believe revived under new management.
It was at one point that they were playing on temporary greens because of a fungus on most of them. But after playing here this past weekend I have to say that I think I will be coming back here more often. The fairways were in very good condition and the greens were rollin good as well. They even have new carts with USB chargers to keep my phone powered up when I was using 18 birdies. A great course...i didn't play so well but not because of the course. I'll be back!
The conditions of the course are great.
The fairways are in great condition with plenty of grass. The greens have come back and are in good conditions. The greens took a big hit last season and all the hard work Mike Byrd and his staff have put into it have paid off. Many trees have been cut down, but still a tight course, so you do need to bring your “A” game.
Overpriced
A tough year for golf courses in Virginia due to all the rain we had this winter. The good ones managed to keep courses in good condition, The Gauntlet did not in my opinion. The course is actually difficult in terms of the topography, but the grounds keeping is poor. A lot of erosion, crab grass on greens, bumpy and hard greens.
Bumpy slow greens
The fairways are in great shape. The tee boxes need some love, but are still playable. The problem I have was with the greens. The course is trying to overcome a fungus from last year. The greens are very bumpy and super slow. Probably running about a 5 on the stimp. The need to be cut down, but with the recovery, they probably can’t cut them down where they need to be. The greens cost me at least 6-7 strokes today. I’ll wait until they get them right before I come back.
Lots of Doglegs
Not as intimidating as its name suggests, this course is still challenging with sharp doglegs and hilly terrain, especially on the opening nine. Greens and fairways somewhat sparse and inconsistent.
Thursday outing
Tee boxes needed some work, greens were bumpy and were a bit hairy, fairways were excellent with grass under your ball and would play this course again. Slow play was a minimum yet was able to take in the scenery of the course. Golf cart were equipped with USB ports to charge your phone and there's no cart girl. Watch out for the foxes that roam the course.
