Major Improvements over the Past Year
Somerset Golf Course has made significant improvements over the past year, especially with the fairways and greens. The course is in much better condition and is becoming a fun, enjoyable, and challenging layout for golfers of all skill levels.
I gave it 4 stars because, while the progress has been impressive, there are still opportunities to make the course even better. It’s clear management is investing in improvements, and I’m looking forward to seeing the continued upgrades. Keep up the great work!
Needs some work
Overall not a bad course, greens still suffering from some blight. The links style is a little difficult to manage with the tee boxes, greens and some fairways nearly touching. Still a decent value for the money. I hope they offer more than just hot dogs soon.
Still needs work
The course over all is beautiful. The layout is really nice as well. With that said the course ground itself was extremely hard. I broke several tees just trying to tee up my ball. You won’t be able to take a divot without breaking a club or your wrist… or both.
This was my first time there, but I was talking with a regular who said the course had fallen into disrepair under the previous owner and the current owner is doing good work bringing it back to life. It will just take time and money. So I’ll be back again later on.
Still needs work
The over all course is nice. In the past it was in disrepair. The new owner is bringing it up, but it still needs a lot of work. The ground itself is hard…. So hard you have to fight just set your tees in, I broke a few just putting them in the ground. You also aren’t going to take a divot. So just be prepared when going. It’s a good place to practice and last minute game. Their putting green is pretty good, but no driving range. Staff was really nice and helpful. Ended up only doing 9 of the 18 and was offered a credit for the other 9, to play later.
Misleading GolfNow Pricing & Underwhelming Experience
I purchased the golf pass specifically to get discounted tee times with cart included. I booked this tee time through GolfNow for $90 and my receipt clearly stated that the cart fee was included. When I arrived at Somerset Golf, the staff told me it was actually $95, and even after showing the receipt proving the cart was included, I was still charged an additional $5 for the cart.
Even though it was “only” $5, it’s the principle of being upcharged after already paying through the app. That’s the whole reason I bought the membership in the first place. The experience felt misleading and frustrating.
On top of that, the course itself was pretty underwhelming. Conditions were average at best, very limited amenities, and overall it didn’t feel worth the hassle or extra charges. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend it based on my experience.
Good round of 9 holes.
Course is decent shape. Layout is good and has some challenging holes. There is a bar and eating area in the clubhouse but was told it hasn't operated in four years. It is a nice area and would make the place nicer. Amenities are limited.
Fantastic golf course
So I’ve just started into being interested in all courses around the northern VA area and did a quick internet search and found this place and it was a pretty good price compared to some of the place further north. You drive up to the clubhouse and it’s at the top of a hill and when you drive over you see the course with the rolling hills and trees and no houses in sight. I walked 9 holes in an hour and 59 minutes with no wait on the group ahead of me. There was a good mix of Par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s that left a good challenge for anyone who wanted it. This course says on its website it recently reopened and having never been there before, I wouldn’t have known. The course was well kept and I will definitely come back and play here!
Layout
Ever since Meadows Farms bought the course it has improved greatly! You can actually find a spot to putt on now. Great layout and people we bring have a fun time! Thanks, Chet Olive
Course
Course is looking better- especially the greens! Caden inside is VERY nice and accommodating! Thanks, Chet
Better Than Expected
Through the years, Somerset has had its ups and downs...there have been times when the course conditions have been borderline phenomenal.
Recently, I've heard reports that it is in its down cycle; although there were areas on some greens that were patchy it was better than expected.
I've always loved the layout and hope that management can continue an upward trajectory. Keep focusing on the greens.
Not worth
I like the layout. Course has some drivable par 4s, front 9 most of the holes/ fairways are close to each other. Back 9 has some houses near the holes. Fairways not in good condition, greens looked like they need to be punched or had been punched and wasn’t good ( I know a couple of course have already done it in the region). Pace of play was good for the most part. I like the course but valuing it for price vs other courses and conditions it’s not worth the price. I have played the course before for cheaper and what I payed before felt that was a good deal for the course.
Fun but needs work.
The course layout is fun especially holes 1-3. After that it’s wide open which leaves room for error until hole 9. The back nine has a bigger house presence. The greens are in rough shape.. but the locals know. IMO a little over priced for the over all state it’s in but good fun.
Greens Not in Good Shape
The fairways were in good condition and maintained. The greens are lost to crabgrass patches on every hole making it difficult to put on smooth surface.
Greens are unplayable.
The lack of care on the greens over the last few months really shows. Every green was basically dirt and patches of crab grass, EVERY SINGLE ONE. Midway through the round, I quit even trying to read putts because it all came down to luck depending on how the patches of crab grass would divert each roll. Fairways were fine but I’m not sure how the course justifies raising their prices for unplayable greens.
