Lake of the Woods

As this was my first time playing here, I was impressed with the course. Playing on a Friday afternoon, I was surprised at how empty the course was. Nice layout, friendly staff. Would definitely return.

Hidden Gem

We played this for the first time although seen it many times driving down route 3. Course was in great shape. Greens were challenging but very fair. Fairways and tee boxes were excellent. Twilight rate with cart was a super deal. I recommend playing this course, I loved it.

A solid course all around!

I visited this course for the first time and was surprised at the great course conditions. Nice Bermuda fairways and even though the greens had apparently been aerated about three weeks prior and you could still see aeration holes, the putts rolled smoothly on the average-pace greens. Bunkers were just ok--I thankfully avoided most of them.

A word of caution, if you miss the fairway by more than 15 yards (especially left) you're likely to lose the ball out of bounds in someone's back yard. The course is tightly nestled amongst the gated community of Lake in the Woods and I was unfortunately hitting it left most of the day.

The layout itself is nothing spectacular and I was held up on a few holes while a tournament finished up but still finished my round in just over 3 hours. On top of that, everyone I encountered was very friendly. In talking with some of them they mentioned that you likely can have the whole course to yourself on Sunday afternoons, a rarity.

I didn't see a chipping green (though I'm sure no one would have objected to chipping to the putting green) but I did stop in for some lunch afterwards and found the prices on the menu very agreeable (plus breakfast served all day), so high marks for off course amenities.

I wished I lived closer because I would frequent this course more often, would definitely recommend if you are in the area.

Great Course to Play

LOW course is located between Culpeper and Fredericksburg, VA. The fairways are a bit tight lying between wooded areas, but for the most part are very green Bermuda grasses now. The greens are in marvelous shape. In total, it is a great place to play.

Great Course that will Test your Skills

This is a gem of a course in Locust Grove that has unbeatable prices in the area. Last year it garnered rave reviews from most of its visitors for its fairways and greens, and this year the conditions are on par with last. While it is challenging, the afternoons are virtually empty so you feel like you own the course and can play alone. The Fareways Cafe has been renovated and food is excellent.

This course has great greens!

Play this course often. It has a new set of green tees on ab out 1/2 of the holes - so this is a great option for those newer golfers and those who do not always hit a long drive. Score cards reflect the green tee slope and green tee scores can be entered into the VSGA GHIN system.

Unbelievable!

PGA quality course. Fantastic bunkers. Shot a 68 in a leg cast (just had surgery). Very narrow and challenging fairways. Greens are superb. Front 9 was perfect. Next time I plan to play the full 18!

Course is in great shape and the staff arae super.

Lake of the Woods golf course provides a challenge to most golfers. Enough water hazards to keep you busy . The course is in great shape and the greens are running fast and smooth..

Really great rental carts with club and ball washers attached. Very helpful staff and a an outstanding cafe and bar at the pro shop. There are forward tees if you're in a hurry and need to play a shorter game.

A nice day playing golf at Lake of the Woods

When I played Lake of the Woods, the weather was 70 degrees and sunny. I felt that the fairways were in great shape for May. The greens were aerated (2) weeks earlier. They putted very well. The Pro Shop Staff was great and I really enjoyed myself. I would encourage any golfer looking to enjoy themselves to play Lake of the Woods Golf Course.

Don't Bother

Give me your money, you should thank us for allowing you to play here. Pace of play-death march. Fairway just mowed, still rough length. Shot 74, so review is not soured by my play, just a bad experience.

After Reconstruction

The course is still in poor playable condition. Last year new water lines were installed. The residue of construction is still apparent along fairways. The fairways (Bermuda) are thin and the rough is clumpy but not unexpected with the weather. Greens are inconsistent with speed and bumpy. It may improve with a turn in the weather but ...

This review is patently offensive. This is, of course, my home course, and I play over 100 rounds per year on this course. I also play more than 25 rounds per year in Florida and 10 in Myrtle Beach. I grant that the course is not a "premier course", but is is as good and playable as any other course within 25 miles and a better value. I play other many other courses in the are as part of the Mid Virginia Senior Golf League. I can only suggest that this review was posted with an ulterior motive and is not a true statement of the quality of this course.
