Lake of the Woods Country Club

Must hit it straight or bring a couple dozen balls. Greens are fast and undulating . Not for beginners . . Lady bartender not very cheerful . That’s why you always see men waitstaff mostly at higher class restaurants and bars . No drama , just professionalism . Sorry , I’m a fan of nice women bartenders but without the attitude

The course is a great shorter course and in really good condition, not too difficult but it does help if you can shape your driver both ways. Bunkers with new sand and the course has Bermuda grass. Players don't do a good job repairing pitch marks so if you are mid day - may have some bumps but the greens were rolling with a bit of a quickness. The only real downside is no driving range but a good practice area and putting green. Overall a great place to go for the money.

I played with some friends in the week after Labor Day. We had never played the course. The staff was very accommodating and it was not difficult to get a tee time. We were aware ahead of time that the course has no practice range. In a community of this size with the amount of play the course should get, that seems to be a big omission.

A few points about the course's playability on the day we were there. The greens had been recently aerated. They were very slow and not very playable. There had been a fair amount of rain in recent weeks, and even the day before we played, yet we found the course from tee to green to be extremely dry and hard. The bermuda turf in the fairways was thin and wispy and did not give much of a cushion for shots as bermuda normally does. Given that there is a lake directly adjacent to the golf course that could provide ample irrigation, it was baffling to me that the course should be so dry. Also given the layout of the course with many extreme elevation changes and blind shots, a fair number of what were judged by eye to be well aimed tee shots found their way into the trees off the fairways. Overall, the course seemed to lend itself to more of a target golf approach that I was not expecting and am not so fond of. We probably won't be playing here again.

Fairly narrow layout winding thru a neighborhood, not overly long, but challenging.. Good conditions tee thru green, especially the bunkers. Some of the best I've seen around Central VA as of 08/31/21. Played and just under 3 hours as a single on Tues afternoon and still had a single hacking it around right behind me the whole day. Meanwhile stuck behind a slow 2some the entire front 9. Clubhouse staff could do a little better pairing up groups to keep consistent pace throughout the course, but otherwise a nice day

Out in the middle of nowhere in a private looks like retirement community with every hole surrounded by modest homes. Not a whole lot of character but it seemed like Zoysia fairways so a few of the lies were very nice to hit off of. There was not enough to want to drive that far to ever play again. I am sure it is fine for all of the retirees but not for the golfer who expects better.

Teeboxes fairways and greens in great shape. White tee slope of 137 makes the course challenging. Great layout with many doglegs. Carts in great shape with mounted ball/club washers are a plus. 4 golfers finished in 3hr 40 minutes

Been playing here for years intermittently when I visit my in-laws. It’s a solid public track, and it’s in the best shape I’ve seen it. Yes there are some spots that are chewed up by big rain recently and wear and tear, but the greens are in great shape compared to previous times I’ve played. It’s a very tough layout, very tight, it makes you think, being humble off the tee is important.

Course was clean, well maintained & pace was perfect for such a hot day. Professional staff, friendly & courteous. Overall great time.

Classic layout; some par 4s repetitive, but overall friendly layout and smooth putting surfaces.

Course is not very long but definitely challenging. Greens were pretty fast which my group enjoyed. Fairways were a little narrow but it made it a little more fun/ frustrating. Overall we had a great time and will absolutely play again if we stay in Lake of the Woods again.

Only real downside is that the entire course is chalked full of houses. However, course is interesting and in good shape. Afternoon rates are great value.
