South Riding Golf Club
About
South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

South Riding rocks!
Great playing conditions and pace of play. Also a very good value for a Saturday morning. Fairways and greens in excellent condition. Could not have had a better day, thanks South Riding.
Great course, long roughs
Decent course. We went on Memorial Day weekend and the pace of play was great. The only issue is that the roughs were way too long. If you hit a drive off the fairway then consider that a lost ball. The only time I could see my ball in there was when I was physically running over the ball with my cart.
Work to be done
The course was acceptable with some needed maintenance especially greenside bunkers, run up areas and skirt areas, otherwise worth the money ,will be back.
Great Course
I really enjoy playing this course. It provides various tee boxes to select according to your ability. All holes are fair, and you can shoot around par if you keep your ball in play. There are some forced carries, but all are manageable if you play the correct tee box for your ability.
Nice course Good Rate
Fun challenging course, great bargain rate.
One of the bettwr courses in the region.
Friendly staff.
Good experience
It had been a while between visits to S Riding. My initial thoughts were that the course was significantly over watered like most of the N Virginia layouts. S Riding wasn't. The course was firm, greens quick, fairways firm. The rough hadn't completely grown in as yet, but overall I loved the course conditions. The greens had multiple grasses in them, but they were firm and rolled great. Someone should tell the est of N Vrginia golf courses that all over watering does is make their greens ball marked to death, and slow. Thanks S Riding...very nice day!
Solid Option in NOVA
Good layout, some challenging holes, some fairly easy. Overall conditions pretty good. Some areas of the course clearly need attention but good for the most part. No beverage cart on a Friday.
Feels like a nice Penderbrook
Overall good course. There are several bunkers that are in some state of repair, and seem to have been that way for a while. Houses are present on the course, but they don't crowd in that much. Greens were in good shape, and good layout, they just really need to get the bunkers under control. Very walkable, but there are three of four holes that have a very considerable distance between them. Good value if you can nab a spot around the $60 mark.
South Riding Course Review
This was my first time playing South Riding, and we got a decent rate for $50 on a Saturday morning. There was no internet working at the course when we got there, and so they had to take down our credit numbers and charge us later...no big deal, but a bit surprising. I hit a small bucket of balls to warm up before my round, and I was a bit disappointed with the condition of the range. There is a grass hitting area, but that was closed since it is still early in the season. That's not my biggest complaint. The issue was that the range mats were atrocious! They were on a slight incilne, and so the ball at times would not even stay in its place. Surely for the money that this place charges, they can do better than that. I frequent Westpark a lot, and the mats there are in much better shape. There was a nice putting green and chipping area, but I didn't use those.
The course itself was in pretty good shape! The fairways were in very good shape, and the ball definitely had some good roll on them. The greens as well rolled very nice for this time of year. There were a few bunkers that were still being repaired, and so it was a free drop under GUR rules. It wasn't too many that were being repaired, and so hopefully in due time they will be done. The ones that had been recently renovated were in really good shape. The tee boxes were also in good shape.
The course definitely has some interesting holes; driver is not necessary on a lot of them, and so choose wisely. The short par-4 17th was definitely a fun hole to play. There were a couple of long par 3s, but nothing too crazy. Overall it was a good round, and we were out at 8:30, and were not pressed for time at all. We let a twosome play through, and we still finished in under 4 hours as a foursome. I generally shoot mid 90s and I shot right in that range from the blue tees; it's a challenge for sure, but it was an enjoyable Saturday morning round of golf.
Horrible pace
I won't play this on the weekend any more. The course is completely backup. If you have 6-7 hours to play 18 hole, this is the place for you. It took us 4 hours to play 13 hole. It is the worst experience ever.
Great Layout
South Riding, routed through a housing development, pulls off the illusion of making you forget about that fact. A pseudo links style design with a wide variety of holes that is usually in good condition, this tract will keep you interested start to finish. Not overly long or difficult, it still requires strategy to score well. During this recent round the bunkers on holes 1 thru 8 were being rebuilt and ground under repair. The rest of the bunkers were superb. As a side note, the sandwiches after the round were superb!
Slow pace.....no marshall played behind group of five women...
I played here on Tuesday. I like to play on the weekdays as the pace of play is generally better....not today, played a four and half hour round, played behind a group of five women...never have I been to a course that allows a fivesome, let alone a five some of women. It was awful, one bad shot after another from all five of them.
To give you an ideas of the slowness. I played in a two some with a friend we Teed off around 1145. On sixteen a single caught us and asked to join us for the last few holes. We got to talking while we were waiting and he teed off at 130, we all finished together at 415pm. Miserable
Good layout, very poor condition.
Course looks like it's been through a monsoon and drought, fairways in terrible shape. Ladies tees bare. Front 9 bunkers under repair. Practice area in even worse shape. Not worth the rate. Wait until next year to play and hope course gets back in shape.
They need some maintenance.
Bunker was rock!!! It is not sand!!!
a lots of potholes...
It was nice course but now....it's not good time to play here.
Course Record Still Safe
Ongoing work on bunkers, especially front 9 (free drop) detracts for an overall good experience. Fairways and greens are soft (from watering). We like the course and staff, so will continue to keep this venue in our rotation.
Sunday golf, 8/20/2015
Although it had not rained for some time, the course had an excessive amount of wet areas. Many of the bunkers were muddy and contained huge puddles of water. Those that were somewhat dry did not have any sand. Overall, the course was very poorly maintained and if I were to make a comparison, I probably would have had a better outing playing in a swamp!!
Great Layout, Sand Traps Stink
South Riding is one of my favorite courses in the DC area in terms of layout. The course is challenging but fair, and it is usually in pretty good condition and keeps a good pace. My only gripe with SR is the sand traps. Every time I bring it up to the staff, they always say they are being fixed, but that is the same response I have been getting for the last 2+ years. Long story short: if you play here, expect about half of the traps to be hardened mud from which you will need (there is a sign in the pro shop mandating this) to pull your ball out of. Once they get the sand traps taken care of, it will go back to being one of my favorites in the area.
One suggestion
Charge a couple extra dollars and throw in a bucket of balls when booking through golfnow. I think it says something negative about a course when you are paying for a round and then you get there and they hit you for extra money to get warmed up.
Unfortunate experience
They really need to fix their driving range. On weekend mornings, golfers are able to hit off grass. The mats are in terrible shape and they are on an incline so the balls roll down the mat. The walkway behind the mats is too close so it isn't safe to walk while golfers are practicing.
There were two high school golf teams having tryouts. The final group went off 20 minutes late and the pro shop staff didn't allow anyone to go off the back because there was a steady flow of groups going from the front to the back. The last group of high school students was full of beginner golfers. The threesome whiffed - on average - five times each shot. I was a single golfer who shot even par and the front nine took 3+ hours. Others have noted the poor condition of the front side bunkers. I asked the pro shop staff several weeks about the status of the bunkers. I was told they were simply waiting for a stretch of good weather; at which point they would pour the new sand. It seems that there are other undisclosed reasons for the continued poor conditions.
In past years I have raved to friends about the condition of the course. I am discouraged by the decline of the previous high standards. The greens are in reasonably good shape, but several tee boxes have noticeable disease.
There was a noticeable lack of staff presence on the course. No marshal and no beverage cart.
I have only written one other review and I only write this one because I want South Riding to return to better times.
need to work on bunker and tee boxes
I play first time hear, course layout is good but bunkers and tee box was very bad.
