South Riding Golf Club
About
South Riding Golf Club is nestled in the gentle hills of northern Virginia, enjoying a landscape of hardwood forests and grassy meadows. The course offers a variety of challenges but the fairways are wide and player-friendly and the greens can be tough in spots but overall they offer some room for error. The layout requires both strategy and skill, it is definitely not a golf course where you will be able to just "grip and rip it." The course pinpoints your weaknesses but it is still a fair test. South Riding Golf Club's eighth hole is memorable for its difficulty but it's an interesting hole sine there are many ways to play it. At 351 yards, the hole is a short but intimidating dogleg left that will tempt you to go over the trees. The fairway is generous but the saddle-shaped green is flanked with bunkers.

Sunday golf, 8/20/2015
Although it had not rained for some time, the course had an excessive amount of wet areas. Many of the bunkers were muddy and contained huge puddles of water. Those that were somewhat dry did not have any sand. Overall, the course was very poorly maintained and if I were to make a comparison, I probably would have had a better outing playing in a swamp!!
Great Layout, Sand Traps Stink
South Riding is one of my favorite courses in the DC area in terms of layout. The course is challenging but fair, and it is usually in pretty good condition and keeps a good pace. My only gripe with SR is the sand traps. Every time I bring it up to the staff, they always say they are being fixed, but that is the same response I have been getting for the last 2+ years. Long story short: if you play here, expect about half of the traps to be hardened mud from which you will need (there is a sign in the pro shop mandating this) to pull your ball out of. Once they get the sand traps taken care of, it will go back to being one of my favorites in the area.
One suggestion
Charge a couple extra dollars and throw in a bucket of balls when booking through golfnow. I think it says something negative about a course when you are paying for a round and then you get there and they hit you for extra money to get warmed up.
Unfortunate experience
They really need to fix their driving range. On weekend mornings, golfers are able to hit off grass. The mats are in terrible shape and they are on an incline so the balls roll down the mat. The walkway behind the mats is too close so it isn't safe to walk while golfers are practicing.
There were two high school golf teams having tryouts. The final group went off 20 minutes late and the pro shop staff didn't allow anyone to go off the back because there was a steady flow of groups going from the front to the back. The last group of high school students was full of beginner golfers. The threesome whiffed - on average - five times each shot. I was a single golfer who shot even par and the front nine took 3+ hours. Others have noted the poor condition of the front side bunkers. I asked the pro shop staff several weeks about the status of the bunkers. I was told they were simply waiting for a stretch of good weather; at which point they would pour the new sand. It seems that there are other undisclosed reasons for the continued poor conditions.
In past years I have raved to friends about the condition of the course. I am discouraged by the decline of the previous high standards. The greens are in reasonably good shape, but several tee boxes have noticeable disease.
There was a noticeable lack of staff presence on the course. No marshal and no beverage cart.
I have only written one other review and I only write this one because I want South Riding to return to better times.
need to work on bunker and tee boxes
I play first time hear, course layout is good but bunkers and tee box was very bad.
What happened here?
Front nine bunkers were all washed out. Under construction. Greens were extremely soft, too soft. Greens rolled ok but too many footprints and indentations from softness. Slow play, 5 hour round. Nobody to marshall course. Back nine fairways were mushy. Not a lot of rain here, looks like a broken pipe issue. Cart girl came by once on a 90 degree day. Not sure what has happened to this place. Used to be in decent condition.
Hidden Gem
This is an outstanding course with immaculate greens. Greens are quick relative to other Public Courses. The Greens are maintained extremely well. The fairways are good, as is the rough. The only problem with the course was that 80% of the sand traps were grounds under repair. Tee boxes were in good shape. Since it is August, the course is beginning to brown up. Practice facilities are excellent. Prior to the round, I practiced my short chipping game and gained an immediate benefit in the round. Look forward to returning to this course. The restaurant section makes very good sandwiches. I suggest the Turkey Club Sandwich which is world class. I live in Arlington 35 miles away and I recommend the South Riding Golf Course highly.
Quick weekday round
Course was in good shape! Greens rolled great but a few lazy divot makers coulda done a better job. Fixed my own and 2-3 more on almost every green. Made a few 25+ footers so can't complain. Great layout and super friendly staff. Let me walk front 9 and cart the back. Thanks!
Beautiful course
Played the best game of my life! Great course! Beautiful, and I loved it. Staff super friendly a knowledgeable. Go!
Good course for all levels of ability
South Riding was a fun round for my dad and I. He is in his late 70s, and the fact that SR has 4 different tee boxes for him to enjoy his day really worked out. Pace was slow, as we were behind a very slow group 2 groups in front of us (my dad and I were paired with another guy, and we got along really well). The marshall did speak to the group that was going slow, so that was not an issue.
All in all, a good round at a nice course.
good value for Twlight
Made a tee time the week before and had something come up so I called to go out later. The staff (Chris?) was more than helpful is getting us out, @ 4:30. We ended up playing the front 2X, but that was fine. For $40, on a beautiful day, it was a great deal. Nobody behind us (or in front) and we fininshed in 3 hours(2some). I appreciated Chris getting us out later. Other than the bunkers being a "work in progress", the course was great. A good mix of length and precision. I'll be back again!
Decent For The Cost...
Decent course for the cost. Traps were a nightmare. I won't call them "sand traps" because they were pretty much mud and stones. Greens were in pretty good shape though. Ran well and no damage. #17 might be one of the worst designed holes on the planet. But overall, worth the afternoon price.
Nice layout
Friendly staff. Nice layout . Unfortunately most of the bunkers were in renovation and not playable . The greens were nice and challenging
Go to course
Thi is a very open and forgiving course. The conditions are good with a little work needed on the greens and some chunks out of the fairway. Pace was slower with it being a holiday but the back 9 is always faster. The staff is friendly but the food could use some focouse. The beer selection is great. Many great local crafts and other good beers. They could also stand to focuse on pouring at a 45 degrees angle to minimize foam on drafts. This is my go to and you'll never have a bad round.
Where's the sand
Where roads are sand is not in traps. Told my partner to pick up and drop no need to play out of that junk. As soon as you can see nice homes like #9 beautiful sand. With the high costs of homes in the area many well over a million dollars I would think with the cost of sand we could get those traps filled in. And counter guys lets get a smile on. Beer cart would have been great it was only 90++ that day n
Good Courses
Good course for all skill levels. Only issues with the course is that they are working on the bunkers on the front 9 so there is no sand in the bunkers and the pace of play was horrible on the back 9.
Good course
A nice golf experience. Don't miss the fairway by much or you will pay the price. Course was in nice shape except the bunkers which are under repair
Still no sand
Got the hot deal and found why
The green was aerated, which happened.
But was surprised to see many of sand hazzards were empty, apparently for fairly long time. Could even see some grasses came out of the dried mud there.
Good Course for the weekender
We had a wonderful weekend golf outing with all over all good conditions and fairly challenging putting green. Wide open fairway for the driver shots and flat course is little boring but once you get to the green, you will enjoy puttings
Avwrage
The course was good except for the maintenance. Traps were horrid and the fairways need love. Hopefully will be better in a couple weeks
