Whispering Firs Golf Club
About
Whispering Firs Golf Club is one of two courses operated by Joint Base Lewis McChord. The other course, Eagles Pride, is located southwest of Whispering Firs. Designed by Bob Baldock in 1962, Whispering Firs opened on what was then McChord Air Force Base and later became part of Joint Base Lewis McChord. Though it's a military golf course, it's open to the public but don't forget to check in with security at the visitor's center. The layout features well manicured fairways lined with mature trees and challenging rough. The small greens demand accuracy and are made even more difficult with strategically placed bunkers framing the edges. There are some tough doglegs that require conservative play, and water hazards come into play as well. Whispering Firs Golf Club will test a variety of skills but it's not an overly punishing course. Players of all skill levels will be able to enjoy a round here.

worthwhile course to play .
I saw no reason to enter a review as I have placed my clicks in the proper boxes and etc. The course is well worth playing , not the best and surely not the worst.
Very nice place to golf!
My first time at Whispering Firs was very nice took my son for his first 18 holes. There was no rush we kept a good pace and had a great time. I will definitely be going again.
Slow Pace
This is a great course that usually moves pretty well, but they have quite a few tournaments and if you are unlucky enough to get stuck behind the tournament players the pace slows down to a crawl. Call ahead and find out if there's a tournament that day!
Quality with no bells of whistles.
Good course and price. No service cart so bring your own. Did not see a Marshall, but play was fast and smooth. Civilians give yourself an extra 20 minutes to get a pass to enter the gate.
Pairings
I was a single and was grouped with three others and was told they could only issue two carts. That's not in the fine print. The person riding with me was late so we waited and of course it backed things up a bit. Aside from that it's a nice course, tight front nine, back nine opens up well and presents numerous scoring opportunities. Overall a very nice course, great greens, good fairways.
Perfect conditions.
We had to process thru the main gate so have to allow extra time for that. At least a half hr. Once that is done it's off to the course. Well maintained and dry. The ball got some good roll and there was some hardpan but plenty of grass if you stay in the fairway.
starting to hate this course, add a 1/2 hour for wait at security gate
some days the greens aren't mowed, or the fairways. golf is not a priority here. course is run by some real goobers. they double-booked me and acted like it was my fault. avoid this course if your a serious golfer..but if you bought your clubs at walmart this course might suit you...
Whispering Firs
Course conditions I'd rate as good, some barespots in fairways and a couple of spotty greens but did not affect play. Quite a few interesting holes, nice layout. Greens rolled pretty good, moderate speed. Would play again.
Quick 18 on a hot Sunday afternoon
I tee'd off at about 1pm as a single and didn't have ANYBODY in front of me the entire round. Finished 18 holes in a record 2.5 hours. The only hassle was checking in at the JBLM visitors center which took a longer that it normally takes to check me in because their computer/photo system wasn't working properly.
Good course
This is a nice course.... Greens were pretty slow.... You can definitely attack the pin on your approach....
So. so course
So so condition.........not very friendly.....cart in poor repair......at best an average golf course.
bring your own lunch
Wonderful day of golf - nice course. What I don't understand is why the facilities (restaurant/bar) close at 3 PM when there is still plenty of play/daylight. Same deal at Ft. Lewis (Eagles Pride).
loved the course. mostly wide fairways and consistant greens
First thing i have not seen anywhere... you have to go onto JBLM which means unless you already have clearance to enter you must stop and get a pass. you have to have your insurance and reg. for the car as well as it helps to have proof of the tee time. They will call and verify anyway so sing up before you go.
We golfed in the afternoon starting at 1pm. Took about 20 minutes to get through the gate. Good thing we were planning on hitting some balls or we would have missed our time.
We did not have anyone behind us until the ninth hole, and we let them pass and then did not have anyone behind us the rest of the round. I don't understand why? the course is very nice and so are the staff. there are a few places where there is some damage, and a couple of the tee boxes were just finishing being repaired, but the rest of the course is in very good condition. very enjoyable. Even the tough holes are fair and can be par'd by the above average golfer.
We will be back... even without any discount, it's rates are good for the quality of the course... but with a GolfNow discounted rate it's a no brainer!
someone made the comment that the restaurant was closed... we found out that is the same issue. closed at 3 pm, was still able to buy a bag of chips and pop though(although a crow came into my cart as we were teeing off on 10 and stole my bag of chips... man, i have never wanted a birdie more than right then!). BEWARE, i think it has learned to do this..
Great scenery
This is a really nice course. It'll be even better when the 2 or 3 holes under construction is finished. One down fall was that the cafe closed at 3 on a Saturday.
Fun, but challenging, course!
Standing at the tee blocks, Whispering Firs looks like a wide open, somewhat easy, course. Surprise! That rough is long and thick and will grab your ball and hide it. It's hard to hit a clean shot out of the rough, which adds to the challenge of the course. Hit it straight! Very fun day, great pace of play, pretty setting, nice folks.
shaggy
the course is in need of some care. greens needed to be rolled... many of the roughs were quite long and shaggy... difficult to find ball at times with a lot of white blooms.... greens=C... tees=B... fairways=C roughs=D
Course Conditions
Greens in terrible shape. Rough just off the fairway so long you can't find your ball, which slows down play and frustrates the golfer. No sand in the bunkers below 1/4". Would not go back unless improvements were made.
golf
nice course and nice people who i met on the course and a very helpful and friendly staff.. first time playing.
Great course
I always enjoy playing this challenging course. The par three's are great, and the finishing hole par 5 is beautiful , viewing the club house from the top of the hill after a good drive! I will play it again and again! Lovely course!
Poor over all
Rough was to high. Lost ball 2" to 5 ft first cut. Greens fast, bumpy, lots of holes all greens. Will not play again this year. Manager seemed not to care. Very slow play.
