GWD was well worth the drive and look forward to playing again
I was very impressed with GWD. It has been on my list of Chicago area courses I've wanted to play for years and I now wish I wouldn't have waited so long. Excellent from start to finish. Staff was helpful in the shop and on the course. The course was in excellent shape and offered a wide variety of holes. I say it was moderately difficult (I'm a 10 handicapper# their is a large number of well placed sand traps and a decent amount of water to steer clear of, but the fairways are wide and the greens are large and if you miss a shot here and there which I did you aren't overly penalized at GWD. I would highly recommend this course and did I mentioned I played 18 with cart for $21 #with a great on line discount)
this course is large
never hit into any other fairway then the one we were on. lots of room. never felt crowded.
Great course
I have played George Dunne many times. The course is well-maintained and the staff is very friendly. The value for the money is super.
Best Forest Preserve Course I've Played
The course was very challenging and kept up very well, except for some minor bunker construction and various maintenance. The staff was very friendly and the rangers did a good job keeping up the pace of play. For the value I highly recommend this course.
Great Course!
This is a great course! It is long and challenging, but has safe shot areas. There is plenty of trouble and sand, but if your in it its your own fault because there is plenty of room for good shots. The greens were in excellent shape. We played right after a rain storm so there was standing water on the fairways so we did not get much roll, but I really like this course. This has become one of my new favorite public courses in the Chicagoland area.
Excellent Course
Liken this to a junior Cog Hill #4 - Dubs Dread. Lots of sand, excellent layout, mature...FANTASTIC but a real challenge.
The Best Forrest Preserve Course
If you are a value golfer this is by far the best course you can play under 50 dollars. The problem is usually the death march it takes to play here. Weekdays after 12 and weekends are usually 5 hour rounds because people are not playing the right tees and this course will beat you badly. Play in the morning and the course shines. The improvements to the fairway bunkers are wonderful and needed. The only thing this course needs is a ranger that will ride some of the hacks ruining it for the rest of us.
Gem in the woods
This course is a true test of your golfing abilities. There are numerous holes that very challenging. This is a great course to hone your shot shaping.
Nice course - not for beginners
George Dunne is the type of course that you can have a good round on if you keep your focus. Even for a top tier player (I'm not - my current handicap is about 19 and I usually play the white tees) tee it up from the back tees and you'll have all the challege you want. This course has been improving slowly over the last few years as the sandtraps are being rehabbed much for the better. Holes 4 and 11 both test your ability to hit the long ball over water but both also have a bail out area to the right. Number 6 is a beautiful par 5 surrounded by traps at the green - I'm content with a bogey there. Number 18 is memorable with a carry over a large pond and different tee areas for the white and blue tees. There is usually also a set of gold tees for the low handicappers but when I played Saturday 8/17/13 the blues were where the golds normally are and there were no gold tees. Overall, a beautiful course - certainly the crown jewel of the forest preserve courses.
Long and Beautiful, Great Layout but Slow
This course is as nice a layout as I've played. If it was really maintained it would be as good as any country club. For $70/weekend ride it's a very good value and because of this it gets a lot of play. Add in the level of difficulty and little to no marshal oversight and you can have some slow rounds. We are talking almost 6 hours on a weekend. My advise to the course is charge a little more and hire more marshals. My advise to the player is book really early tee times during the week. Either way, bring your "A" game and prepare to enjoy the sights. You will have time to do so.
Great Course, not so great golfers and timing.
We took the drive out from Naperville a few days ago to play this course as it looked great online and was a FP course. When we arrived we had a 4:15 pm tee time for two reserved. We arrived around 3:45 pm to get checked in and do some practice putting. Checking in was great and the staff was very nice.
All seemed well when we received our cart, the starter was probably the youngest starter I have ever seen but was very nice and you could tell he loved his job. He knew what he was talking about and went through the normal routine of items.
Where my lower star rating begins is at the tee box. We were just about to tee off after waiting a good 5-6 min for the group in front of us to get off the tee box, when they sent another twosome to join us last minute. This is not the biggest deal but in my opinion it should have been arranged prior to my back swing.
We could tell right away that they seemed to push out each group pretty fast and it became extra relevant when it took us a total of 15 minutes to complete the first hole....
Overall the course is in excellent shape and has some challenging holes when playing from the tips like we do. They did not have any marshalls working the course and this is probably the main reason why I did not enjoy it that much, we could just not get into a steady tempo of play all day. We would either be waiting 10 minutes here or being rushed there because we felt bad for the group behind us. All in all I feel if they get some marshalls on the course and learn to separate their foursomes a bit better it would have been 5 stars for a cheaper public course.
Top Forest Preserve course, great value
This top Forest Preserve course is the top of it's class. Provides challenging tee shots on par 5's and large greens. Long and short play for big or small hitters. Course well maintained. 40 minutes from near North Side Chicago, worth the trip.
SLOW PLAY
It's a very nice course I would consider playing again, but the PACE was so slow, one couldn't develop rhythm ..... and the Ranger was ineffective.
wonderful
I had a great time playing this course, challenging yet fun.
Course is in great condition
Overall, the value for golf course itself is worth the $35 Hotdeal during the week. However, I do not think I have ever played a slower round of golf during the week. our group arrived 30 minutes prior to tee time and we were on the tee 30 minutes after our scheduled time. Par 5 - Par 3, I believe #6 and #7, counted 4 carts on 7 tee, 2 carts on 6 green, our 2 carts in the fairway 125 yards out, 2 carts in the fairway off the tee, and 2 carts waiting to hit on 6 tee. The course is in great condition. The greens were quick but as expected with many players, there were countless ball marks. Only saw a ranger once on 7 tee box. If you have patience for a 5.5-6+ hour round of golf then this course is a good play. I understand a packed course playing in 4.5 hours but waiting 20+ minutes to hit my next shot and a 6 hour round is not for me.
This course provided a very good golf experience!
We had a memorable golf experience at George Dunne and I would golf there again. There were a few issues with sprinklers in the fairways at some holes however, overall the course was in very good shape and provided a positive and challenging day of golf.
BX doing a great job here
Awsome course awsome conditions only problem was pace of play 2 groups in front of us was a foursome that was 1.5 holes behind the group in front of them. there was a threesome in front of us which after 9 turned into a twosome. The only time I saw a ranger was in the clubhouse after 9
One of the best public courses in area. Greens are good even tho heavily played.
Pace of play too slow. Although advised to keep pace when teeing off on 1st hole, there were no rangers patrolling to encourage keeping a decent pace.
great course for the money
this was the first time I've played here and its a great course for the money,,,we tee'd off at 11:30am on Saturday and completed our round within 4 1/2 hours. fairways and greens were in great shape...some bunkers are in need of repairs, maintenance etc but all in all they didn't effect my round. just gotta make sure you stay in the fairways. great course and I would go back again
Great public course for a decent price
This is by far the best Forest Preserve course in Chicago. It is kept in great shape, the staff is super friendly, and its still less than most comparable "private" courses around Chicago. It can be challenging because of its length, use of bunkers, and very tricky greens. Definitely recommended.
