English Turn Golf & Country Club
About
English Turn Golf & Country Club is a Jack Nicklaus design that was crafted in 1988 to host the New Orleans PGA Tour event. Nicklaus designed the course to be enjoyed equally by spectators and golfers, incorporating gallery berms and spectator mounds throughout. This challenging design is known for its undulating greens that will test even the most seasoned players. Each hole has a unique design that combines strategically placed bunkers, including large waste bunkers, and sloping grass swales. There is also carefully sculpted mounding along the edges of the fairways. On top of that, water comes into play on nearly every hole. English Turn's signature hole, the 15th, is a tricky par 5 with an island green but it's the final hole, a par 4 with water all along the left side, that is rumored to be the golf course's toughest.

Makes City Park's layout look like a middle school design
Always top notch here. Pro shop people are always on point and friendly. The best course in the GNO.
Did a golf trip to New Orleans. Learned on the way that the south has been experiencing a drought… and it showed. To be fair I am not going to rate or comment on the course conditions. Instead, given the rest of my experience I am choosing to assume that with some rain the course conditions would be fantastic, and I do look forward to returning one day to find out.
Things I Liked
- For me, English Turn was the most difficult course I played in New Orleans. Though the fairways are wide, the bunkers are well placed and if you’re not on the “line of charm” your approach shot will be challenging. Oh, and there’s water everywhere!
- The back 9 was a good challenge. Hole #15 is their signature hole, but that is sandwiched between 2 really tough par 4s.
- Maybe I just didn’t walk in the right areas, but I recall wishing there were a few more yardage markers out in the fairways.
- Despite the drought, the greens were still in great shape.
- A 4some let me (walking single) play through. Thank you!
Things I Did Not Like
- Non-resident rates. Though I would rather pay the course directly, that level of mark-up led to me retreat and purchase an online deal.
Thing Important to Me
- This course takes up some acreage. The walk from some of the tees to greens can be noticeable. That being said, the course is walkable and I would do so again.
- Cool branded ball marker.
- There were water coolers on the range, which was enough for me that day. I don’t recall seeing any water coolers out on the course.
Great course to play when in New Orleans
This course is a great layout with lots of water and bunkers, many of the bunkers save you from a lost ball in the water if you spray the ball a bit, course is in great shape for Mid November, greens are in fantastic shape, staff was very friendly when checking in, they let me go out early since the course wasn’t that busy, overall a great course and would recommend to anyone if you’re in the area, I’m a 7 handicap and play lots of different courses from west coast to east coast.
Very disappointed.
The course has potential, but is “VERY TIRED”. The condition of the greens would be the only thing that made it somewhat worth the price. The tee boxes, fairways and adjacent areas are far below the standards I would expect from a Nicholas Signature course.
Classic Jack Nicklaus Course
Had a fantastic day with my Dad..They let him ride along with no cost.. Pretty much had the course to ourselves on a Beautiful sunny day.. $60 golfnow😁⛳️
Beautiful course and conditions
Weather was perfect. Greens in great shape. Lots of bunkers and water hazards (but only if you go far left or right). Nice layout. And some spectacular holes.
Good value. Driving range not included in the price. Would gladly return.
James, the starter, did a great job giving us the overview of the course and taking our picture at the first tee box. He even caught up to us on hole 18 to see how we enjoyed the course.
Good course if your in the area
Great round of golf shot 7 under my normal score. I played 18 holes in just over 3 hours.
Good pace of play, course was in good shape and greens were pretty fast.
Great Course, Great Hospitality
Awesome layout, challenging but still very fun with the ability to score. Greens were like glass though so watch your touch with the putter. The starter, I believe his name was James, gave us the coolest rundown on the course and its specifics prior to teeing off on the first tee. Would definitely recommend to a friend.
Water all around makes it challenging
Great course with natural obstacles all around. The feature hole is certainly a challenge
First time here.
Great experience starting at the curb appeal. Staff greeted me at the door. Explained in detail where to get my range balls and how to get to the starter at hole 1. James took my picture at the first tee with the clubhouse in the background. Explained the course in detail that I’ve never experienced before. For the money you can’t beat this old pga course.
Great course presenting challenges on almost every holes
Friendly welcome and the staff took the time to explain all about the course. The Jack Nicklaus design certainly forces us to plan each and every hole. Water all along with a multitude of sand traps. We enjoyed it very much.
James made it
Enjoyed the starter’s talk on the first tee. Great experience and great course.
Excellent experience
Took my son. Both had a great time. The starter, James, was the best. He gave us the history and details about the course. He snapped some pictures for the two of us. Great experience.
The little things make a difference
The course was in great shape and an excellent challenge for this 15-handicapper. There is lots of water to see and admire, but it generally doesn't come into play unless you're well off the fairway. The exception is hole 15 with it's memorable island green -one of my favorite holes ever. You will be battling the challenging bunkers, however. Steer clear. I spent a day at the beach that was reflected on my scorecard.
Our starter, James was a highlight. He gave us a great overview of the course then took a picture of our foursome before setting us off on hole 1. On 16, he caught up with us again to see how we enjoyed our day.
The burger at the turn was great and the staff was good, without exception. The head pro said hello and urged us to visit again. I most definitely plan to!
Got out for twilight, so the rate was reasonable. Course is challenging and in very good condition. Greens are fast.
