Slow golf
I was sent out alone, a single surrounded by foursomes. I finished the front nine in a little over 2 1/2 hours and concluded that the back would probably be slower as the golfers ahead of me tired, so I quit after nine. I probably won’t go back.
Cart Path Only
When you find out that a course is cart path only when you get to the course, the rest is unimportant. We were a twosome and one of us is handicapped. He paid for the round and only got a ride around the course.
I don't understand why this is not prominently displayed on the webpage when you are booking.
I'm pretty sure Teeoff will blame the course and the course will blame Teeoff. This really must be resolved. Even if you are not handicapped, cart path only is mostly impossible for the elderly.
It is what it is
Caution: it's cart path only, no exceptions. And I'd you're a single, you're probably gonna share a cart.
Overall was fair for what it was. Range ball machine was broken and needed to ask staff for assistance. As said above it's cart path only. I didn't mind so much but wad disappointed cause it wasn't stated here. Also it hurt one of our players cause he's disabled and couldn't play at all.
Course was in fair condition. Lots of bunkers surround the green with no sand which hurts alot of shots.
Staff was friendly. A little expensive even for a deal time. But it's what you'd kinda expect.
Get what you pay for.
Course has a lot of greenside bunkers, which would be ok if they had a decent amount of sand. They should be better maintained. Maybe that means reducing the number and/or size or make some so you could putt out of them. That would also improve the pace of play.
#15 has huge bunker opposite the green from restaurant and it has very little sand in it. Someone is going to skull a bunker shot into the window of the restaurant. Just a matter of time. I almost did yesterday and I’m not (normally) terrible out of bunkers. You just can’t lay the club open at all out of these bunkers. No bounce will work.
Great layout, love the protected greens
Overall great, met some good brothers I played with…. Not overly happy that we not aware of cart path only because of overseeding
Carts and path
May not be too important, but the condition of the carts and the cart path are the worst I have ever experienced in Tucson.
All else is very good for a municipal course.
Ruts
Need to fill path holes and ruts, was pretty rough bouncing around course on the paths. FILL IN OR GRADE PATHS.OTHWISE NICE LITTLE COURSE!
Waiting on the first tee there were 12 players teeing off on the first tee I have never encountered A12 some on a tee box ? Have you ?
Declining conditions
El Rio was Tucson's first course. Back then, they didn't use grass but poured out some oil and compressed the ground, making the natural Caliche soil even harder. The greens are still hard. No need to keep from walking in someone else's line. It has sadly generally been poorly cared for. This was turned around later this summer, getting in even better condition than Silverbell. But, with over seeding just around the corner, they seem to have let it go just a bit. I still managed to shoot my best score even on the course. Conservative play is very important.
The course was in good shape. The clubhouse is currently being renovated. But should be nice once it is completed. Looking forward to it.
