Nice course. Play was slow. Group ahead was really slow.
Nice course
El Rio is a straightforward golf course without a ton of trouble. However there are bunkers right at the front left and right of most holes. Those bunkers have steep fronts you have to hit over to get onto the green. With that said, the greens right now are absolutely perfect. Smooth and quick.
Decent Tucson City Course
Flat, pretty much wide open and minimal water. Nice green grass in first part of Feb 2025. Decent greens and sand, not fantastic, but pretty good for tuning up your game. Outdated facility with minimal practice facilities like the 4 other city courses.
El Rio
This is an old golf course in Tucson, but it was well maintained. The greens were a little hard but they were nice and fast.
Had a good time. Walking and playing with shorts in February.
To expensive
To expensive for what it has to offer. The staff is very nice but the cours is cheap. No indication on the cours, no bathroom, no water to drink, nothing to wash your ball. Nothing to indicate the distance and show the hole.
Greens ate me up today!
Couldn't keep the ball on the green to save my life, the skirt was short so the ball would roll all the way off down into the brown Bermuda grass.
But I love the greens this time of year, they roll fast and true.
The bunkers (I hit 11 today) were in good shape/ well maintained - that was a plus for any of the Tucson courses.
OVERBOOKED
Course was overbooked, there was a 2 hour delay because of frost. Staff should recognize frost conditions and not book tee times 2 or 3 hours before frost clears. This is just greediness on courses part as it delays all players wanted to golf.
Special Place
When I was younger, this place was pretty "ratty" as the greens were choppy and full of numerous sections that appeared to be diseased, The Fairways here also used to be embarrassing--filled with sections that were dried out and basically dirt. They also often had debris from the trees that line the course scattered about which sometimes made finding your ball (even on the fairway) hard to do.
It appears that Tucson City Golf (and Troon) have made a commitment to making this place shine. The course conditions have improved dramatically and playing here is now a treat. This course, I am told, is the oldest grass course in Arizona and it has a rich history (eg: The course was once a stop on the PGA tour, back in the day). The staff here is super friendly and professional and make you feel very welcomed and appreciated. I used to begrudgingly play here (and I am not a golf snob at all), but now I really like getting a chance to get a round in on Tucson's far west side.
I do sometimes get frustrated by the rate of play, and some of the amenities show their age, but but if we have friends or family who golf come to Tucson, this is a place that I like to bring them.
Good times
Golf course was in good condition. Staff is always friendly. After work round of golf. Had fun
Fun and friendly course
New to the area. Nice course, in good condition. Staff nice and a good practice area for your short game.
