Classic Enke
Hadn't played Enke in about 15 years. Used to play this course with my Dad back when I had my junior card(age 9-13) so I knew this course very well. Heard they were losing it due to funding so wasn't expecting much. Tee boxes needed trimming, dead spots in the fairways and fairly bumpy greens. A few holes the grass was great, freshly grown. Really can't complain since I only paid $13 for a morning tee time with cart. Very challenging from the tips. Couple blind corners which I seemed to have forgotten. All in all I would pay $20 every time to come play this course.
Fred's on the upswing
I read the past reviews of Enke's demise and waited to see if the course would survive with all of its financial issues. It did survive, and the community has helped a great deal. The course is coming back well from aeration and although the day I played the greens were fuzzy they were probably just letting them grow a bit before mowing again. there was grass everywhere there should be. It's target/desert golf so if you aren't hitting it well tee to green you will see your score balloon with penalty strokes. In a couple more weeks Enke will be a great looking course in the city's stable. Recommended!
ps. I played in under 4 hours with a pre-7am tee time.
Best Tucson Municipal
This is my favorite of the Tucson City courses. Challenging play and stunning views of the mountains. I grew up playing this course, so I am partial and biased, but you'll be hard pressed to beat a day at Fred Enke. The course will test your ability, imagination and resolve, all while giving you a guaranteed opportunity to see desert wildlife. The practice facilities alone are worth the visit, especially if you need to work on your short game. Bring your binoculars, every club in your arsenal, an imaginative game plan and some extra balls (the desert brush isn't the easiest to retrieve from). The course is beginning to return to its former glory, thanks to a strong community effort to keep it open, and is well worth your time. Of course, "a bad day of golf..."
Tough blind shots
This course has some blind shots and beware of hitting through the fairway when maybe you should cut that drive a little more. Excellent price through Golfnow!
A good course with good green fees
Fun course, friendly staff and there is even a resident bobcat! Great course for all levels.
Fred Enke, May 2013
This course was in good shape, a little dry and the greens had been sanded (which did not help in putting) but with that said the overall condition was good and playable, as this is a desert course it is always challenging.
Conditions of the course were good.
This was our first time playing this course. The condition of the course was great. The greens and fairways were in very good condition. This course is a great play for the price. We will be back.
As a City course it's not all that bad.. could be better with continued attention.
Golf carts need replaced, attention to course condition is a must.
Needs some care, but fun to play and challenging
Mostly, greens and fairways were OK. Sand traps were weak with grass growing in parts of them. Carts and equipment were in good shape.
True desert golf course
Like this golf course. Offers challenging golf and is a comfortable place to play at very reasonable price. Staff is friendly, and course was maintained. Love the greens when maintained. Great practice areas; driving range, bunkers, chipping and putting. What a shame that the city wants to close this course and make it into something it is not.
Desert Splendor
Fred Enke can be a difficult course to play and requires the golfer to use course management skills to place the ball on the fairways and greens. For spray and play players, bring lot of balls. It is one of the few courses I have played here in Southern Arizona that has an abundant and remarkably diverse amount of wildlife. It isn't unusual to see coyotes, bobcats, and roadrunners watching the action as you manuever through the course. The staff are wonderful and the pace of play is excellent.
Needs some tree trimming so you can see the fairway from the tee box, such as hole number 11.
I am familar with the course. Been playing it on and off for 20 years
Great desert course for the money.
Great desert course for the money. Fairways and greens fair to good, sand traps were compact. Driving range is large with really nice grass to hit from, but driving into mostly dirt. Really like the desert course, watch for thorns.
Great Municipal Desert Course
Take some balls with you - even if you are a low handicapper! The conditions are quite firm so the ball will be bouncing around - sometimes into the desert. In the warmer months you will want to think twice about looking for your ball (rattle snakes). This is a fun layout with some challenging holes including two lengthy par threes. The par 5s are reachable in two for longer hitters and you will also be able to hit sort irons to the greens if you are straight off the tee. The course conditions are perfectly fine for what you pay. Unfortunately there was not a lot of play when I was there. It was nice to be able to get around in 2.5 hours, but you also want the course to do more business. They are thinking of shutting down this course (that would be a shame) so play it while you can. I am sure if Tucson did a better job of marketing the city and would get marshalls back on the courses, they could get more than enough play. This was an exceptional value.
Nice course, although greens were bumpy.
Overall nice course for the price. Some holes are easy and some are tough. Some holes are not visible from tee shot.
Greens need attention.
Most greens were half dirt & half grass. Not sure what the issue is, over watering???
This a fun course with a relaxed atmosphere.
Fred Enke is a wonderful municipal golf course. It has lots of varied terrain, and challenging and not-so-challenging holes. The desert setting and the mountain views compliment the golf experience.
While the cart paths are mostly dirt/gravel, and very rough and dusty, the tees, fairways and greens are in good condition.
This is a hidden gem for municipal course players in south Tucson!
Oveerall, enjoyed the round
Positives: Friendly and helpful staff, interesting and sometimes very challenging holes.
Greens were varied in quality,
Great course to find (and lose) golfballs
A great challenge recovering nicely from City management neglect
Fairways are a little sparce and greens were variable from sparce to good. This is a really good, challenging desert course that is welll worth playing even tough it could be in a little better condition.
